Default Loading for a Model 788 30-30

Anybody loaded for a 30-30 bolt? Can ya safely turn up the velocity a little or should you stick with the conservative lever loads that are published. Reloaders nest has some interesting loads...but I have my doubts about loading that hot. I probably wont load hot ..Im just wondering what the possibilities are. I have plenty of other calibers that have plenty enough power to keep from worrying bout hotrodding a 30-30. Thanks in advance!

If you can load the 150 Grain Speer Mag tip to about 22-2300 fps, it will work great. You have the right idea about not hot rodding the 30-30. The case itself is not overly strong. At lower velocities like those of the 30-30, that evil ballistic tip is hard to beat as well.

One of the funnier things I have read at reloadersnest is some of the guys using necked down 375 brass because of its strength...getting 2500 or so out of the ballistic tips... Why not just move up a caliber? That sounds like a bomb waiting to happen. Im sure the action will handle it...but...not sure bout those rimmed cases.

I loaded the speer 130 gr spire point in the handi rifle, and could get 2400 or more without hotrodding, should work in the 788 as well

im in the process of working out a varmint load for my 30-30 using a 110 grain RN soft point its looking like it will be moving in the high 2500's to 2600 fps. When i get done with it and have a chance to chrono it I will post about my results.

I loaded some 150 Gr. ballistic tips for my 788 30-30.Had some O.A.L. problems .Didn't want to cycle through the clip.Had to shoot them like Barney Fife.Good note though,They were very accurate and did the job well.Good luck.
