.300 Win Mag necked down to ??????

It has been necked up and down both. At least the basic case has. The 264 Win Mag is basically the necked dow 300 Win Mag or necked down 458. Necking it down any further causes problems of severe overbore which eats up barrels and throats. With todays slower powders the 264 Win Mag would do much better.

Although the .264 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag, and .338 Winchester share the same case; the .300 Winchester is actually a different animal - with a longer body and shorter neck. It has been wildcatted down to various diameters, but they aren't very popular. Necking it down below .25 caliber would be way too much of a good thing, IMO.

Me and a Buddy were at the range and a guy had a 22-243 Ackley Improved that was awesome. So we were just tinkering with ideas of another super fast round that would be just fun to shoot. It's not going to be for anything practical or hunting (besides varmints) just to say we made something "cool".

The Winnie is a belted magnum. If you are serious I would want something that would headspace on the shoulder, not a belt. Also the 264 is a fantastic round, it got alot of bad press(we have 4 of them). Good cleanig procedures, and good barrels will last a long time. I can remember when everyone said no tothe 220 Swift, they said "it will wear out a barrel overnight". Now we know that is not true. I have been shooting my Swift since 1979, with no erosion. By the way one of our 264's was bought in 1970, and has easily over a 1000 rounds through it, with no problems. Both rifles are loaded hot(why else would you own one), Tom.

I'm starting to get a feel for what you are looking for; and I would invite you to take a hard look at the 6MM-284. This caliber with 70 grain Ballistic Tips/Blitzkings can make 4,000 fps. This ballistic coefficient of these bullets is quite a bit higher than the 55 gr. .224 bullets, and the combination will deliver the goods at long range like no other varmint caliber out there. Go up to heavier bullets and you have a great long range medium game caliber. There is something inherent to this caliber that makes for superb groups at long range.
