.308 Shooters

RE: .308 Shooters
I have not, however I have shot a lot of the Hornady 190 grain BTHP Match bullers at steel silhouettes. I have also used that bullet in the 168 grain. Both bullets shot very well in My Remington 308. I used the 190 grain BTSP from Hornady for big game hunting as well. The 308 is a great round.

My gun doesn't like the 150 class bullets at longer range. I am currently using a Savage Model 12. I wanted a beanfield gun for deer and groundhogs. Got my first long range groundhog at 689 yards, using 168gr. Sierra Matchkings. It also likes The 168 grain CT Ballistic Tip.

#40Fan,
What are you going to use for a scope? Do you use target knobs or do you have a reticle that is ballistically matched to your gun? Just wondering. I want to get intothat magical 1,000 yard club at VHA. And I want to do it with a factory rifle. I am not above tinkering with the ammo, trigger and scope, though.
It was more the knowlege of the ballistics of the.308 by my hunting partner. This was my first foray into long range shooting. It is hard to judge a four foot holdover. When you are shooting at twice or more ofyour zero range, you miss alot more than you hit.
I know I learned a lot more in one trip of shooting than in a year of shorter distancerange time. Seeing the importance of optics, and what these guns will do at long range isjust as important as knowing what they will do . A ballistic chart just isn't the same as seeing your gun andreloads perform.689 is a unbelievable number until you try it.

RE: .308 Shooters
I have a Super Sniper 20x on my gun. Seeing a 6x6 inch target at 500 yards last week was a snap, but was only shooting 55 grain Sierra Blitzkings out of my 22-250 that I will rebarrel to a .308 to get into the 1000 yard range.
(Goalie) Reloader 15 is my ticket to this 2950+ fps. I have been using it with my .223 and 22-250 and saw in my Lee Reloading manual that Reloader 15 with a 150 gr. bullet will go 2880 fps, but you know how conservative they can be.
If anyone reading this doesn't mind looking it up in their reloading manual, what is the max charger for RL-15 for a 155 gr. bullet? If you don't show RL-15 for the 155's, tell me what it says for the 150's. Thanks.

RE: .308 Shooters
I usually have to see a 308 break 2850fps with a 150 grain bullet. I have had several and its not uncommon to be around 2750 with most powders and 150 grain bullets. Now I will be the first to admit that I have not tried all of the powders and pay little attention to velocity once I find an accurate load. I am happy with a very accurate load at 2700 or a little higher. I knocked over a lot of 500 meter steel Rams with the 190 grain Hornady BTHP match bullets leaving the muzzle at 2450 fps. Lots of Prairie dogs too as there was a dog town right next to the silhouette range. I used a 12 power silhouette scope.
