speer grand slam bullets

I tried em as one of my first bullets for 300RUM. Accuracy was horrible. I got 2MOA performance. And this gun could easily get 3" groups at 300yards. I took them as backup to Newfoundland. Never shot anything with em. One strange thing about them, they shot fast. I got over 3320fps with 95gr of H1000. I get less than 3200 with 180gr partions and accubonds. No pressure signs. But alarmed me.
There was one guy who used to post on here, GAHunter, who loved em. He got em shooting great seating them real deep. I mean more than factory. He said they were great on Moose/elk but didn't expand well on muley and whitetail.

I used them when they first came on the market, had the (gs) stamped on the base,I think they were made with a two part core. The rear section was hard and the front was much softer. Speer claimed they were poured in the jacket molten ( I think) so the sections wouldn't seperate at impact. I don't know how they are constructed now as I don't have a need for the premium bullets, Whitetails aren't that tough. It was an effort to take away coustomers from Nosler.

I also had poor results with accuracy loadingthe Grand Slam. My favorites are the Hornady SST and Nosler Accubond. Excellent accuracy and with great penetration and knock down energy.

I've only tried the 180's in my .300 Wby and had no problems with accuracy. In fact, the smallest group I've ever shot was with these bullets. However, I never got around to trying them on game, yet. The ones I've still got areolder ones. I believe, but don't know for sure, that they changed the construction of these bulletssince I bought mine. I don't know the particulars, though.

I used these quite a bit back in the 1980's in the 180 grain .308 and the 150 grain .270. Got good but not great accuracy out of them. Terminal performance was really good. They make a bigger hole through the middle of the animal than the Nosler Partition or the Barnes X, yet still have very good penetration and won't come apart if you hit big bone. My only complaint is that the BC isn't very good - which isn't really an issue until you get out there about 400 yards or so.

I shot a moose two times with the 338-250 grain at 150 yards with my .338-06 and i wasn't happy with them. Both bullets broke up too fast for me on the heavy bones in the neck where it joins the body, and i never used them again.
Speer may have improved them by now,but ijust don't see the need to try them again, as NP's area muchBETTER design that have NEVER failed to work as advertised for me.

Common sense would dictate that the Nosler Partison is likely the best bullet ever designed! But reality looks down at me, they will not perform accurately in my rifles. But I wish they would.

I can honestly say that when i first started useing NP's in the late 60's, to this day i haven't owned even one rifle that didn't shoot more than accurate enough for hunting. I can also say that IF i ever wouldhave had a rifle that was desiginated for "big game" and it wouldn't shoot NP's good enough for hunting accuracy, it would get send down the road ASAP!!
I believe in working up one load for everythingin my big game rifles and useing it for everything i will shoot with "that" rifle, and that's "another" excelent reasonto use the best bullet possible.
NP's have worked so well for me on moose, big bears and everything else that it's all i use onany big animials... When i was crawling around in the alders in brown bear country (like the vally in the pict.) i wanted to know that the bullet i was useing would work at that close range, and also work just as well on those longer shots, likei took to geta caribou in thepict..
