Hodgdon Powder vs IMR Powder
 

Has anyone found one powder to be more consistent or more accurate? I am most interested in putting four powders head to head.
H-4831 vs IMR-4831
and
H-4350 vs IMR-4350

Lets say you have a 25-06 that you aretrying to work up a load for with 110-grain Nosler, Accubond bullets?

What is the first powder you reach for & why.
My example is listed below.

I myself have had good results with H-4831 in several rifles & calibers. H-4831 is the first powder I will grab. I currently use H-4831 in,
2- 300-win mags.
1- 300-R.U.M.
3- 270-win.
1- 280-rem.

I found the 4350 powders that Hodgdon seemed to build up a tad more velocity/pressure than the IMR.

As far as consistency, I like IMR.Hodgdon has had a habit of changing the forumula from time to time. I know they are the same corp. now but used too 10 years ago H1000 was a good powder but seems it lost its punch in the last 4 years.

I always seem to gravitate to Hodgdon powders. I use h4831sc in several cartridges. My second stop is always Alliant. Vhitavouri makes excellent powder but is too expensive for my taste.

There's a few powders I buy in 8 pound jugs.....one is H-4831 SC.....another is H-414 and also BL-C(2)....these are the powders I reach for first unless my loading data shows another powder provides much better performance.

My loading bench has over 40 different types of powder and enough is enough.....I'm really trying to make do with a very few and these powders go a very long ways.

I could not say that I have seen a difference quality wise. I really like H414 and IMR 4831 as well as H 4831 SC. Since I load for several 08 cases, I have to have IMR 4064.

There are some powders from these two sources that are pretty much the same, and some that are NOT!

For example, the difference between IMR 4350 and H4350; IMR4895 and H4895, and perhaps some others are not much greater than the difference between two different lots of the same powder. However, others are significantly different despite having the same numerical designation. The example that comes to mind here is IMR 4831 vs H4831. Here the IMR product is quite a bit faster than Hodgdon's, and is, in truth, not significantlyslower than IMR 4350.

For my uses, I find that there are powders in both product lines that give me the results I want in certain cartridges, so I use powders from both companies (as well as from Alliant, Norma, and Accurate). I find that no one powder manufacturer hasa product linethat meets ALL my reloading needs......

I also like H-414 I use it in my .220 swift ,.243, and .270 wsm. I also like varget for my 45/70 and my 300 wm.

not sure on the other. These powders have been good to me.

I too use powders from both manufacturers depending on cartridge being loaded. As to which powder do I start with? Quite frankly, its more of a guess backed by using several manuals for reference and over 40 years experience. But that's why I reload. So I can experiment and spend more time on the range.

I use both brands and they both work well. A particular load combination in a certain rifle might favor one or the other, but they're both good stuff.
