RE: 45/70 load
I will be curious on how it turns out for ya. I have been using 46gr of 4198 with 300gr nosler partitions. Its supposed to be safe up to 51.5gr but every load I have tried, accuracy is good until I get to the 2000fps point and starts stringing shots.

RE: 45/70 load
Hey big country I finally got to shoot my 45/70. Out of my Buffalo classic I got three shoots at 1920 fps, 1914 fps, 1918 fps not bad but when I took it to 58 gr of varget , right at 2000 fps all went to hell !!! At 50 yards I was 3/4 inch then after the increase 1.5 inch so back to work ,I think that I can live with 1915 fps. Felt really good shooting it too, have been to busy to shoot lately.Next test with marlin guide gun

For a powder charge im using 58 grains of H335 under a 350 grain hornady round nose interlock my chrono is showing a average velocity between 2095 fps and 2102 fps. I also was having trouble with groupings when I was nearing the 2000 fps mark during the work up. Not wanting to give up the velocity because my friend who was using his .510 Wells (500 grain solid @ 2400 fps) last year had to put 3 shots into his before it expired. I tinkered with the bullet seating depth and crimp. I found that when you up the charge these long straight wall cartridges appreciate longer COL with a tighter crimp.
If you are using a crimp I highly recommend crimping at seperate stage from seating your bullet and using a lee factory crimp die, ive noticed with my RCBS seating/crimping die the roll crimp doesnt come out very uniform which i believe would also hinder your accuracy.
I'll post a picture as soon as I get batteries for the camera of a 3 shot 100 yard group. Im getting one ragged hole the size of a quarter. I think im ready for that bison hunt.

RE: 45/70 load
I did think about doing some 405 grain lead cast and BP loads for the hunt but with the thought of my friends hunt having to put 3 rounds from his .510 Wells into his bison to put it down really had me wanting the most bang out of the cartridge as possible. My friends hunt got a little hairy, just keep in mind a .510 Wells load pushes a 500 grain solid at a little over 2400 fps and has a muzzle energy around 6,000 ft lbs. the first shot was at about 100 yards just behind the right shoulder the bison turned and mock charged the group stopping at about 80 yards from the group warner put a second round in the animal it hit just below where the first round hit. this time the animal charged and warner put a 3rd round in the animal this time hitting the top of the right shoulder. it didnt even seem to phase animal as it was still charging then just as his guide was gonna put a 12 ga slug in its head the animal keeled over dead 10 yards infront of them.

Don't know what you're shooting, but out of my Marlin Guide Gun, I shoot 51.0 gr of H4198 behind a Sierra 300 Gr FPHP. This load has accounted for 3 black bear here in PA. It is devastating and accurate.
NOTE: This load should not be used with a trap door rifle or older rifle. Marlins or Rugers only.
