can we change the seven point six two by therty nine calaber name to the 30mini,way easer to say ,less confuzing and it would gain more of an american apeal

That's the name I'd prefer. Or 30 Russian Rimless. However, the European designations do really give more descriptive information than ours do! For example to the uninitiaed,308 Norma ammo should work in a .308 Winchester! Likewise, the myriad .300's should interchange, since they are all ".300's", right??

Th whole purpose of a name is to enable others to know what you are describing. The cartridge has been known as the M43, or the 7.62x39 for lots of years to many, many people.You can call it whatever you want.How about "Alice"? Just don't expect anyone else to know what you are talking about.

The 30-30 was so call because it was a 30 caliber bullet over 30 grains of powder. Back in the day names made sense. Just like the 7.62x39mm makes sense. a 7.62mm bulet loaded in a 39mm long case. That way you don't confuse it with the 7.62x51mm, 7.62x54Rmm, the 7.62x63mm or the 7.62x51R.

You probably won't believe it, but, yeah! I've seen guys behind counters in gunstores, and vendors at gunshow who have no earthly idea about military calibers. I've seen them try to sell 7mm Remigton magnum to guys buying a 7x57 rifle. I've seen folks try to sell 7.65x53 mauser as 7.62x54R. I've seen vendors argue with people, telling them the 7.62x39 is the "same thing" as 7.62x54R.

When the Germans came up with the concept of the sturmgewehr which used an intermediate scaled back cartridge known as the 7.92x33, they called it the 7.92 or 8mm Kurtz. Seems like a logical name fof the Soviet's version of the 'assault rifle' carrtidge that they modeled after the German's.
