Default rem 300 ultra mag

I'm loading 180 gr scirocco bonded I would like some input as to what powder? I've been told RL25. I will be hunting elk with a posibility of a 300 yrd shot, what say you.

Be careful with the scirroco, builds pressure much quicker than say a Bullistic tip or partition. I could go up to 97gr H1000 with partition but had to stop at 93gr with thescirroco. I went thru a box, and never could get them to shoot. I might try a faster powder like RL22 or 7828, maybe H1000. RL25 is the ticket for 200gr bullets like the accubond.

Hey, give it a try. Let us know how it does.

The scirocco shot very poorly in both of my 300 ultramags as well. They also left a great deal of copper fouling in the barrel.I am now using the 180gr tsx.I did my finalpoint of impact checksthis morning and the result was a 5/8" group with each rifle.

This link has a variety of loads. These are not necessarily from a reloading manual so you may want to verify with a published manual before trying.

The Retumbo load for the 200 Grain Accubond was extremely accurate in a friends Model 700 with a custom barrel.

I've been searching for info to reload for RUM myself. We had a 3 day long range rifle shoot a while back and I talked to the guy tonight who won most of the money with his 300 RUM Remington LSS that has a 26" barrel that I understand has a 1/10 twist. He was shooting against people who were also using the heavy barreled varmit rifles. I saw his 200 yrd. group with 3 shots touching. He also took an elk last year at 736 yards dead center in the shoulder and had 86% bullet retention. Uses the 165 gr. Scirocco with 92 gr. RL22. Told me that puts it out at 3300 and any faster he starts loosing accuracy. Still very fast. I'm going to try it myself!
Good Luck

My buddy shoots Retumbo with 180 Scirocco out of his 300RUM Sendero with good success. Not sure what charge he is using though.

I tried the 150's in my 7mm Rem Mag.and they were not as accurate as other pills in my rifle. However, I did not work on load development much either. I'm gonna try the Accubonds this year.

If 300 yards will be your max you don't need to load the 300 RUM to the gills. You could use any of the following H870, IMR7828, RL22, H1000, or RL25. I think in the 180 gr range H1000 will probably give the best results.

If 300 yards will be your max the 300win mag or 300wsm would serve just as well with less recoil and longer barrel life.

Not jumping on you or anything stubble, but do you expect the guy to go out and sell the gun cause you see less recoil and longer barrel life in other guns? I guess the poor guy came asking about powders and ended up hearing people telling him he could do better with a different gun.

While I do not expect the guy to sell the gun once he owns it(although many people seem to be doing so with the ultramag cartridges),I am merely pointing out that there are more suitable cartridges for those conditions.Perhaps by doing so,I can prevent someone else from buying a cartridge that they will regret having bought in the first place. You have to remember that I own two 300ultramags myself, and I am very happy with them.As such ,I am not knocking the cartridge, but rather suggesting that it is not the best choice for many applications.
