If 300 yards will be your max you don't need to load the 300 RUM to the gills.
If 300 yards will be your max the 300win mag or 300wsm would serve just as well with less recoil and longer barrel life.
Not jumping on you or anything stubble, but do you expect the guy to go out and sell the gun cause you see less recoil and longer barrel life in other guns? I guess the poor guy came asking about powders and ended up hearing people telling him he could do better with a different gun.
While I do not expect the guy to sell the gun once he owns it(although many people seem to be doing so with the ultramag cartridges),I am merely pointing out that there are more suitable cartridges for those conditions.Perhaps by doing so,I can prevent someone else from buying a cartridge that they will regret having bought in the first place. You have to remember that I own two 300ultramags myself, and I am very happy with them.As such ,I am not knocking the cartridge, but rather suggesting that it is not the best choice for many applications.
I understand that but the guy asked what powders?

Hey guys thanks for all the info, I like this site, I found that 92 grs of R22 seems to do well in my 300rum with the 180 gr scirooco, I shot a nice 1/2 inch group. I did not check the fps, should make a good elk getter. I loaded some 150 seira's they tend to explode a lot in and exit, is there a great bullet for deer that won"t blow em up so bad , in South Dakota out on the praire long shots are common , so a load to reach out and touch em , but not disintegrate, any input will be appreciated thanks gentelman ,Fishead

I really think you should considera 165 grain bullet for long range shooting with an ultramag. The 165 velocities are still 3350 + Fps and the there are bullets out there that can stay intact at close ranges. The BC of some 165s are so much better that their trajectories will pretty much equal out with the 150s at 500 yds. The barnes triple shock with .505 BC would be a greatchoiceif your gun shoots them accurately.

MAN!!!!! I cant believe I got in late on this one.........another classic, Stubble and Bigcountry goin at it about recoil and "better suited cartriges" !:D Anyway.......From what I've seen in testing my 300 RUM the H-1000 gives me great stable results, But Im pushing a 180 gr Accubond. I think I will stay with the bigger bullets considering any animal that I would actually use it on would be Bear/Elk size game. Besides, I can push my 180 gr to 3250 with a mid range powder charge (hopefully) extending barrel life.

p.s. hey stubble.....about your comment on people selling their RUM's, did you know Bigcountry got rid of his???? I think he should abstain from replying to 300 RUM threads since he doesnt even own one anymore! :D
