Hi Guys-

Am starting to test out some new load with the weatherby for elk and am wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the CT Ballistic Silvertip Bullets? I'm really struggling on finding the right bulet that will still group well at 300yds.

I use a .270 AI for elk, which is loaded to .270 Wby ballistics. The CT Ballistic Silvertips are a little too soft for elk hunting. Fine for deer and antelope, though. I would try the 140 Accubonds or130 Swift Sciroccos. I have used both of these bullets with success on elk - like the Scirocco better, but whichever one your gun will shoot the best. The 140 TBBC is also very good, as is the 150 Speer Grand Slam.

Try the Barnes Triple Shock. I have not been a Barnes fan, but I will tell you that I tried them in my .240 Wby and .300 Wby and the are really good with the H4831.
You will need a Barnes, Partition, Accubond, or Scirocco. I personally would use the 130 grain Accubond. I would not use ballistic tip on elk size animal uselss using a heavy magmum like .338 or so. The .270 Wby is great and the Acuubond is a great bullet for Elk.

There are many good bullets on the market,such as Speer,Sierra,Nosler,Hornady ect. The 130gr and 150 gr bullet for the 270Wby are the most popular weights that the factory loads. vangunsmith

I would go with a 150 gr. Barnes X FB or TSX FB, Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, orTBBC. Good luck.

For elk size game any .270 will be well heeled with the Nosler 160 partition.

I tried these back in the early 80's and wasn't very impressed. They were even worse than the 150 Partitions when it came to whistling through the ribs without leaving a very big hole. Had to shoot the elk four times before it went down. Roskoe

My uncle had a push feed Model 70 Winchester sporter for years. One great load he found for this gun in the accuracy department was the 130 gr. Nosler BT over 72.0 gr. of H4831 and he used CCI Mag primers. This gun would hold a 5/8" 3 shot group with this load. Lost the gun in a cabin fire or I would own it today since he passed a couple of years ago.

OK, I think I'm gonna go with the Accubonds....Does anyone have a recipe for type of powder? I assume Federal 215 primers also.

What kind of ballistics should I expect with this load? (Drop at 300yds, energy, etc?)

I would recommend slowly and carefully working up from about 67 gr. of H4831 to a maximum of about 70.5 gr. I am assuming you know how to reload and read pressure signs. In my dad's gun, this load produced 3266 fps. If you sight in 3" high at 100 yards, and at 8,000 feet elevation, you should be right on at about 335 yards and only 7" low at 400 yards. Pretty flat load. Good luck. Roskoe.
