RE: Quebec Winter Caribou Hunting
FYI - the trail goes about 60KM north past the powerlines and is fair - it runs up along the north dam road and you can cross into the LA1 and then stay on the ice to get to the north side of the res. which todate has always had some animals. We saw nothing in 3 days hunting up to the powerlines and south of Mirage to the south fish shacks. Across the res. we saw groups of 10-50 and more fairly steady heading back up. Ice needs to be looked at - some areas were wet, but for the most part there was a foot (checked with axe). We took extra gas insleds and we needed it. Lit a fire to warm up mid hunt -left in dark at 6:00am and it was dead dark by th time we hit the powerlines omn the way back.
And who is saying this is fish in a barrel? |
RE: Quebec Winter Caribou Hunting
Only those who haven't been there call it shooting fish in a barrell. The trail is semi-gromed for quite a way. I wouldn't recommend riding double even on a machine designed for it. The tundras handle most of it well butdon't dowell breaking new train in the bush when the snow is deep. In any case it's not a trip to take alone. Three or four together for safety sake. Extra gas is a must. You can get out there a long way and it could be a long walk back.

RE: Quebec Winter Caribou Hunting
Hi Spike00, I thought that might have been you when we passed but its too bad we did not get a chance to stop and talk. This was definitely the hardest I have ever hunted. According to my GPS I walked close to 12 miles and put over 20 hours on my Argo. We ended up taking three cowsout of eight tags.(no size, I weighed all three before butchering and they were all close to 115 lbs.) We took them all over three days about 8.5 miles NNE of Camp K. On the way out just north of the checkpoint we saw at least 500 animals in a 40 mile stretch. Happy Holidays.
