2009 Canadian Hunting Posts

Well unfortunately my goose hunt was a bust. We set up for Canadas and all we had flying was about 10000Snow Geese, they are very wary and had nothing doing with us. They did come over a couple times but wouldn't commit. Still was pretty cool as I'd neve shot over decoys before. I think we know what to do next time, mind you that won't be till next Sept. but huntings all about learning as you go. The weather sucked for afternoon pheasanys as well, had 2 dogs but never kicked up a ****!
Ah well, next weekend is the last trip with the bow and we're trying out a new spot in the bow zone. I'll let you know how that turns out.

JD, thats hunting over coys for you. If they come it is unbelievable, when they say nah it makes for a long day. Snows are tough to coy at the best of times, at this time of year they've been hammered all the way down and are near impossible with canada deeks out. Good luck on your last bow trip next week.
I spent sunday hunting whitetails with the ML. I decieded to head to the south east in the am, where I was hunting last fall during rifle. Wind wasn't great for spot a so I decieded to turn it into a scouting trip more then hunting and sat up on a rise with the spotting scope/tripod. I saw a couple dandy mulie bucks..no tag, 2 bull moose...no tag and herd of elk with a huge 6x6 bull in tote...no tag. Not a single whitetail deer was seen in an area that last fall was teaming with them, my bad as I spent no time in the area this year scouting till yesterday. Lesson learned yet again!!! Given the events of the am I knew the ML spot was my destination for the evening. Wind was perfect now we just needed a re-appearence of the buck, but it was not to be. In fact we only had 5 deer show up last evening, a doe/fawn pair, 2 dinks and the old man we saw last trip. A great trip none the less as Sarah again accompanied me and we had a great time/chat, she never opened her book this time.
Good Luck all!

What an amazing weekend!! Nope, didn't shoot much but had an experience like no other.First off (Sat.) went to a new spot in the bow zone, never been to the property but saw the landowner shot a nice 5X5 elk a couple weeks back. Get there 6:30 am in the pitch dark, we were told there were 2 stands & 2 blinds. My buddy metthe landowner last week and had agood idea of where they were, ya right. We found the blinds but no tree stands. I said I would sit on a ridge, wait for light & see if I could spot them. As I sat in the dark listening to the coyotes howl, I figured I should pull the bow back to limber up...AHHH No release!! I make the 500yd dash back to the truck & run all the way back to the ridge. Tired already & legs are burning. As light appears, I hear elk in the valley in front of me, calling amongst thmeselves. At about 8:30 I see the first few funnel from the wooded hillside to the field above. Needless to say once they stopped filtering out, there were hundreds of elk in the field (see pic). They lept looking back until the herd took off, apparently 2 hunters scared them off. I head over to see if I can make out where they went, when all of a sudden I have a stampede running by me (see pic) tons of elk at 40yds but all on a full tilit run. IAfter 1/2 of the herd went by I took some pics, then I tried to move up 5 yds to see if I could get a clear shot only to get busted. Needless to say it was the rush of a lifetime. Sunday was spent with my oldest looking for pheasants. We got one (even though he was asleep) but he had fun!! All in all it was a weekend I'll never forget!!!

Awesome JD, sound like a great weekend!!!
I went today for mulie's (rifle opener), passed up some but did find a good in at the end of the day.. no shot fired. Drew tags for an earn a buck zone this year, which was near my antelope zone. I filled my doe tags in ML season my 2 partners filled their tags today. Good day but I missed a big wild boar on the run. Man those things can boggy. It took awhile to believe what i was seeing and in flash he was dancing across the prairie! First shot was over top @ 250ish and number 2 hit right between his hoof's...close but no cigar. I have heard about loose boars but this was the first one I saw in the flesh and he was BIG! Love to cross pathes with both again...to be continued!!

Too bad Skeeter...I have shot a couple boars with the bow and they are good eating! Rifle starts for us this weekend as well so hopefully we can find a decent mulie or WT.
Skeet, I have a question for you. I got my Sask lic. & regs and was reading them last night. It says I can't wear white heargear, I just bought a new "lucky hat" from Bass pro last week and it's freakin white
Also my winter balaclava is white. I have a full blaze camo suit I'll be weraing (see pic) Do they really care the color of my hat?

Your upper suit must be full or combination of: white, red, yellow or orange colours. Blaze or white camo is not allowed!! Headwear can be solid or any combination of: orange, red or yellow (no white). You'll have to trade your white luvky hat for a O,Y or R one instead...while your at you best find a upper suit of O, R, Y or W to go overtop or in lieu of the blaze camo one you have. Makes little sense but that is the rules here.
On a side note talked to a fellow that lives/hunts the spiritwood area; good #'s of deer, mature bucks are starting to show up & movements aren't just low light anymore (rut is coming). He hunts exactly like I do in this area, in transition & thinks safety (the bush). Lots of crop in the field still but weatherman is being somewhat helpful to the farmers with + 7 to + 10 highs forecasted for the next 4 days. If I can connect on a mulie this weekend, I'm heading that way on the 14 & 15 (possibly even the 11th).

holy crap are you serious?? From my take on it I was thinking the colors on my coveralls are are a combination of them...Well it's good I asked you. I went out today and bought a cheapo solid white suit to cover my good stuff. I can't believe it has to be solid, oh well I'm good now! Good to hear about the deer situation as well. Keep me posted as I'm getting pretty pumped. Watched a jim Shockey video last night, I can't get too picky but I'm definately going there with the intentions of nothing gets shot at if it's not 150 or bigger or a cool looking set of bone. Thanks & good luck this weekend!

Here's some pics from Sat. Final tally 1 muley buck (my cousins), 2 pheasants & 2 ducks (mine). He shot this guy at around 10am after I pushed some bush to him. Right after he shot the mulie, a decent WT buck came out but he missed him. Overall a good weekend!
