Can anyone tell me whats involved in the private sale and shippingof a muzzleloading rifle from a US resident to someone in Canada? Is it even legal to do that?

Call Canada Customs to avoid a headache.

Check with Canada Customs is a good idea. I was talking to a couple of custom guys at a border crossing and the rules for ML's are a little greyer than those for center fire rifles. I seems like there are a number of depends in the rules but the one constant is whom ever is receiving the rifle must have Aquisition License. I also know that if it is shipped rather than taken directly across the border it is held up for quite some time.

I would think you could register the gun in Canada under your friends name... he will know how to do this. Once it's registered, he can bring it back with him. I think he will need to get the gun verified once it's in canada, but it should work.
