RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
Hia, good job and best of luck sticking your elk. Nothing better then hearing them scream:D!! Thanks for the tips on Olie Canolie.Neighbouring bottom piece has lots of second growth and is down, it is usually a hotspot near the end or after the peak of the rut, so I will be checking it hard when I get up there prior to season. I am now officially stoked...countdown has begun.
Heard a rumor about SERM changing the dress code for rifle hunters to colours only from the waist up. A phone call to SERM verified the changes are indeed ineffect for the 2007 hunting season. Furthermorehere is a cutn' paste from anemail response sent to me from another sask. hunter who emailed his inquiry to SERM. Section 21 of the “Wildlife Regulations” (Dress Code) has been relaxed to allow for rifle hunters to dress in scarlet, bright yellow, blaze orange, yellow, white or combinations thereof from the waist up only. This amendment was made after the printing of the synopsis. Note: Headgear must remain any of the above colors except white. |
RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
Well its all over but the cryin. Leave for school today :( Arrowed a spiker on thursday but it was bitter sweet. Ya i tagged out but that herd bull out witted me for 3 consecutive mornings. With the rifle he would have been hangin but 60 yards or so would all he would give me. It was a real good hunt this year though cause they called so well, had alot of fun and had some shivers going down my back. I had a few nice bucks in also was going to stick the one 150 class 4 pointer but i was waitin for that spike to come over so i held off. Last few nights the other bucks came in but he never returned. I took some great video this year of elk and some bucks in the stand. The one 5x4 was still packin velvet on friday but saturday it was hangin off him. I had him at 15 yards eatin on oats so i got a nice close up video. That camera arm worked great. I will post up a few pics later when i get the film developed (still behind in times).

RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
Good job dan, looking forward to some pics. As far as the herd bull they don't get big just because. I have toyed with them myself (last year perfect example) and yet to come out on the winning end but those experiences and memories are what keeps me going. You canbet that not to many sask elk hunters will experience what you did..never mind 3 days in a row!!!!
Velvet a dropping...still packing here, though i expect that will change in the near future. So rut is on in your neck of the woods??? What were they responding to cow calls or bugles?? I have heard mixed reviews in terms of the call thus far.Not talking where we hunt yet, partner went up this weekend and saidit waspretty quiet. Botched an attempt on 5x5 and decieded to pass a young spikethis am.He said the cow/calves he saw were without bulls, he was actually hoping to take a cow and it just didn't materialize. Spikes appear to be taking a pounding I know of a number taken this past week and I am sure more will be dropping this week as well. Went to the range tonight for the final session and all set, can't wait for the 15th...living elk for a week. I am hopefulfor talking and/or responding like they were last year when we got in deep pressuring them. Favorite time of the year is elk,one bugle or wiff of a bull for me sets the tone for the fall! BTW best of luck in your posting. PS were the spikes you guys shotshined or still in velvet?? |
RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
way to go Hia! Great start to the season.
Not a lot happening up here, still busy working until the end of the month. Hopefully i'll make it out for elk/deer opener on the 17th and moose on the 25th. I've seen a few good WT's and the odd elk, trigger finger is starting to get itchy... Good luck chasing elk Skeeter, bring us back some good stories! |
RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
All spikes were in velvet as per. The bulls seemed to really be givin er bag. That big boy had 25 cows or so with him everytime i saw him. As well there were quite a few satelite bulls working the bush line looking for straglers. The power bugle, hoochie mama and quaker herd master cow call all seemed to work well in different situations. There were a ton of spikes we took 3 out but plenty left that will be goin down opening minutes of rifle. Of course mine being the smallest, i thought it was a cow until it hit 50 yardslol oh well 210 lbs is better than tag soup. Good luck on your hunt jeff.

Good work Dan, see ya in two weeks bud.. Lots of elk hanging right here ...big herd bull should be busy around my place.. had a nice 5x5 bull..big bodied buggar and 6 spikes...in the front yard about a week ago...The spikes and several cows are showing upon the oats every night...I am purposely leaving them around my place alone..so you have the best chances..when you get here.. We'll hunt the big country up the St. Joe if needed too...land of steep with some hawg bulls in it..
I'll stick to the whitetails till you get here.. bout got the shop done...so we'll have a nice place to hang a gagger.. |
