RE: 2007 Canadian Whitetails
Congrats on your job, yf. Nice finds sask. I think kevin y was home around easter but i wasn't around. I would imagine he picked up some sheds. River is opening up here not bad now. The 17hmr was rockin last night and took 2 40 lb beavers within 10 minutes of each other off of the culverts by my place. I picked up a set of neoprene chest waders this year and now wonder how i ever beaver hunted without them. I set out one trap on a creek just south of the house as a tester but I don't want to set any more till some of the ice leaves and it opens up more. We are supposed to get over a foot of snow today also so I don't want my traps out there. Hopefully by middle of next week i will be going full bore with 16 connibears and the rifle.

Hey guys, long time no talk!:D How are all of mynorthern friends doing? Well, I hope. From everything I've heard, you guys had another VERY SNOWY and VERY COLD winter again this year!![:@]I was curious how it may have affected you, as well as how it may haveaffected the deer herd?I also heard you had FEET of drifted snow acrossthe fields, and other open area's? Will this put an ass wooping on the deer numbers this year? I heard Alberta and Sask were the worst hit, what do you think?
Oh yea, how do you like my avatar? It's my '06Edmonton Bow Zone buck.;) |

Early in, here (sask) the fringe and forest areas where hit hard again. The deer are hurting in numbers big time to the north. SERM has reduced the bag limits as such for the first time in many years in these areas to try and compensate for the winter kill. Elsewhere the numbers appear good and the winter wasn't as severe, however I expectwith morepressureit too willresult in tougher conditions across saskatchewan when it comes to hunting deer. Still lots of deer around just not the hay days we have come to know during the past decade or so.

Still lots of deer around just not the hay days we have come to know during the past decade or so. The further north the worse the winter was. Peace region was probably worse than average but not as badthe previouswinter (06-07). All the surveys we flew this past winter confirmed a pretty heavy loss of deer and moose as a result of the 06-07 winter. recruitment is also down so i'm expectingwe'll seeless draw tags issued for moose an mulies in these zones. Edmonton wasn't as bad as up here but they did get a real big dump of late snow and cold weather in April. That may have been a killer for the deer as it came when they are at their weekest and forage was at its poorest. Overall, my prediction/ expectation is that we'll still see enoughbig mature deer for the next year or so but there will be a few very lean years coming as the gap in recruitment catches up and all the old bucks die off. |
