RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Yes the flood continues in the area. The river is flooding over the road on the backroads by my place grrrrrr. the ol dodge makes it but i gotta giver a bit of a lickin'. Sauturday we just finished cleaning up the ducks and geese and the rain hit and kept steady till 9pm or so and at that point we had over 1.5 inches then the rain turned to snow. We came home from a wedding at 3am and it was still snowing. Most of it was gone by then time my headache went away the next day. Just sittin here in Brandon watchin it snow like a some beach. Really seeming to cool off now, could see the nuts on them bucks tighten up a bit earlier than usual. oh and of course if it does snow and stay skeeter u better be moose huntin and all of us chasin deer in it. Nothin like huntin in snow especially the first few days.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
If you guys only had 7-9 days to hunt whitetails in Alberta of Sask, when would you go?
I'm looking to make a trip and I've heard you ought to wait till the leaves fall and till the bucks get rutty. Tell me what you think? How friggin cold is it usually Nov 15 in Central Alberta? How do you dress? Wool over good long johns for bush pushing? Thanks, Spring Tom, the name indicates I like Springtime but I'll face the cold to chase a big bruiser buck in Canada. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Well when I go, I head towards Sask, but only b/c thats the only spot I can.
Ive alwyas hunted the Nov 21 week - and the past 2/3 years it been WAY to warm, somedays wearing a t-shirt after 10am. Others on t his thread are more knowledgable than me on those provinces though... g'luck |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Tom, If I could pick only one week to hunt it would be from about the 20th-27th (3rd week)of november. To me this always seems to be the week when the bucks are really moving and things are in full swing. However, depending on the weather the rut may kick in a little earlier or later.
Traditionally you can expectthe weather to be anywhere from +15 degress C to -30C. It seems that the last few years temperatures have been closer to the -5 to +15 range. Prepare for the cold by bringing lots of layers. You can always take some off if you're too warm. If you look at some of the older topics on this board there are several threads that go into detail about what to expect and what to bring to alberta/saskatchewan. I know Skeeter and others have always provided sound advice. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Tom where are you located? If USA then you'll require an outfitter in saskatchewan, if canadian you don't have a choice as your regulated to 1 week (unless you want to hunt the forest or SMZ/RMZ muzzleloader/bow zones) or your booking through an outfitter. So it depends on the first question!
For me it is Nov. 15th - 22nd. I have harvested more whitetail buckson the 15th than any other day....18th is close though! Though this really depends on where your hunting, style, etc. As far as what to expect in november warm, cool, cold and freeze your arse off. Could be no snow, maybe nice dust, 6-12" orbettermeasured in feet! You prepare for it all and hope for something inbetween like -10, 12" snow &N winds. You'll need good undergarments- Polyproplene (what most wear is helly hensen, myself included). Top that with layers of wool/fleece, gortex shell to cut the wind and water proof. I like yukon fleece as topper outfit. Here in rifle it must be solid orange, red, yellow or white and any combination of these colours (except the cap - can notbe white). Snow or blaze camo are NO GO! Gortex boots/thinsulate/ wool socks and handwarmers. For your head varying weight of toques (caps_ wool or fleece(my preference). I like the wool fingerless flip overs for my hand wear, I wear a pair of helly hansen gloves underneath and top them with hand warmers when brisk. If bitterly cold I wear trapper mitts and thye helly hansen gloves underneath,I also have a neck warmer and would reccomend for long stands a body bag or sleeping bag for additional comfort. |
