LAZYARCHER; you're getting me all worked up for next week. I want to try the free James Valley scent on a doe decoy and see if I can draw the big boy out of the swamp. Reading your post has me very optimistic. I want to position the decoy on a hill, upwind from the swamp, with the James Valley scent on her. I can't go down wind but I should be able to position myself in cover about 1-200 yds to the side (crosswind, away from the bedding area). Then it's anticipation.
If you have any suggestions I'm all ears.

lazyarcher; I was reconsidering my setup last night. I like your idea of scenting the deer trail along the swamp edge. I keep thinking bowhunting when I do my setup. But this setup allows me to stay out of the breeze while still being in range. You don't think someone would try a 500 yard shot over a field of cows to shoot my deer decoy from the road do you?
Maybe I'll set set out a scent trail instead of using the decoy?

I've finally seen some pre-rut sign, it was in Oakville at the PetroCan refinery.
Driving in I spotted a nice rack sticking out from a pine only 50m away, I pulled over and watched a beatifull typical 8 point walk out into the open, he was huge and his rack was at least 160" (to those saying "yeah right" I have a 126" hanging in my room and this one was MUCH bigger). I watched him for 10min before deciding it was time to get to work.
Later in the day I was working near the small pine where I spotted him and found that it was all rubbed up with branches snapped. I can see why big bucks use bigger trees because this this tree is so damaged it probably won't survive the winter.
I'm sure I'll find more rubs and some scrapes when I get to the camp tomorrow (got 2 weeks off <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>) but this is the first sign I've seen so far.
Good luck all, talk to you in a couple of weeks.

your right, no hunting there, PC would never risk the liability, and its right beside major roads and sub-divisions, within town limits. The whole place stinks like sulphur and there isn't much food around so I'm not sure why he stays there.
I just posted because it was probably the biggest deer I've ever seen on the hoof and am pumped about tomorrow and the next few weeks.
I had my CD necklace with me, hope it brings the big ones around while I'm on stand.
Good Luck
