Canada in the Rough
Has anyone had a chance to see this new hunting program. I might have caught the first or second episode and have been following it since. The best is that it’s all Canadian with a variety of hunting different game, not just deer. Check out the link for your local listing if you’re interested. www.canadaintherough.com

RE: Canada in the Rough
Hello all!
My name is Chris Hockley and I work for Thomas Pigeon the host and executive producer of Canada In The Rough. I would love to hear more of your thoughts....good and bad about the show. We use as much advice anytime that we can....but particularily from hunters involved in the sport at such a level as to even be talking shop online! Hope to talk with you all soon. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Can I suggest, bowhunting moose. And if by chance you need someone to help out I`d be willing to call, shoot or cook;), I`ll leave the dressing and dragging for you fellas:)!
|
RE: Canada in the Rough
How about a little later than 6AM on a Sunday morn?;)
Ron:D |
RE: Canada in the Rough
There is indeed a compound bow hunt for moose coming up....
As for the times...if you check out our webpage at www.canadaintherough.com you will find that there are new air times starting as of September. If you are in our area and able to attend the Vaughan Mills Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World during their 2005 Hunting Classic...you will find us on hand doing seminars and addressing any questions and/or concerns. We do have the complete set of DVD's being prepped for release along with a 2hr "Best Of" video. There is even a hunt included that was aired only in the U.S.A.!! Yours in the outdoors. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
I have yet to see it as I'm either sleeping or long gone doing ( hunting or fishing ) what the show is about. If they ever get a better time slot I'm sure I would enjoy it.
|
RE: Canada in the Rough
So what would make you happy here? I am not following. It's both too early (as you are sleeping) AND too late (as you are already gone).
Help us out here. New times are starting in September. Chris |

RE: Canada in the Rough
Chris,
How about some hunts in the Atlantic Canada? Maybe some deer or mooose hunting in NB or maybe some caribou in NF? Even waterfowl in NS or PEI would be great. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
I've seen it a couple of times and as someone just getting into hunting I really enjoy it. I have the same beef about the time though...where I live it's on at 7:30 am and I usually only catch the last 15 mins. I'm thinking of just taping it so I can watch it later. I think a better time would be sometime in the evening on a weekday, or a little later in the morning on a weekend (around 10ish)

RE: Canada in the Rough
Guys....as it stands now...it's impossible to TELL Global when the show is to air. It's like asking them to cut "Sex in the City" to run our show. It just doesn't work this way.
With the success of the show...things will indeed change. Global has already bumped the times in most areas up a half hour. This was Global's step and not ours. They like it that much! As far as hunts go...by all means...suggest away. There are a number of hunts already set up for 2006 but spaces are available. I imagine the knowledge base here is fantastic...so if you know guides/oufitters that you think would be great for the show...then again...let us know. Thanks for all of your input. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Here are a few suggestions for the show. 1) The winter caribou hunt in Quebec ( mirage outfitters). I have done it a couple of times and if you check here it is quite popular there is a near 50 page thread on it. 2) Another interesting one would be Whitetail on Anticosti Island. 3) Black powder deer on Manitoulin Island ( call Rob Seifreid, Manitoulin Big Game Outfitters ). 4) Archery black bear over bait in Ontario, 5) rabbit hunting with beagles, 6) a show on bird dogs only etc.....................

RE: Canada in the Rough
i'm lucky GLOBAL has the program on at 9:00 am .where i live ..if u ever film in ANTICOSTI ISLAND don't go there before november..i hunted on the island 5 times ,in oct. the big buck's are all asleep ..we go to RIVIER BELL .THEY HAVE AN AIRPORT 15 MIN. FROM THE MAIN LODGE.. i also tried calling and rattling in oct. ..with buck in sight there was no response ,the deer kept on walking ..but in nov. the big buck's go crazy ..

RE: Canada in the Rough
It's about time we have a Canadian-based hunting show and kudo's to Global and the Men's Channel for running it! Watched the Saskatchewan bear hunt this morning, and enjoyed it.
|
RE: Canada in the Rough
I have seen all of the shows and really enjoy them. What I would like to see is info on the firearm he is using each hunt, make, model, caliber, bullets, optics that sort of thing. I watch it on sattelite and it is on about 5 times on Sunday.

RE: Canada in the Rough
hello CHRIS i watched ur show this morning [black bear hunt] and u blew me away ...MY CONGRADS !!!!the bow and rifle hunt's were 100% very hard to do better ...i am leaving the 16 sept. for a caribou hunt with EXPLO-SYLVA in CANIAPISCAU ..my fourth time ..p.s. the doc. on scope's was well done ,but my personel experience i would not go past 42 mm ..i find 50 mm to awkward for hunting ..i use a ELITE 4200 ,2.5-10 x 40mm ...

RE: Canada in the Rough
Saw today's episode as well. Great Bear hunt.
Cheers |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Wow...there are some really serious hunters here....not that this wasn't expected...just nice to be able to relate.
Terry....as far as the show suggestions...love them! Also....not surprisingly...Thomas has just finished taping a couple of the suggested shows. The caribou hunt in Quebec...he literally just got back from....and the bear hunt with a bow in Ontario...well that's where he is now! The others are great suggestions and you can be sure that I will pass these on. The Firearms are Sako. The calibers, loads etc are something that will also be dealt with as our learning curve decreases. We have indeed felt the need to cover these topics. In fact, if you check out the Bass Pro Shops website at www.basspro.com and surf your way to the Vaughan store and the seminar topics that will be covered during their fall hunting classic (Sept 2-11th). Thomas will be talking on this very topic. Hope to see you there! Chris |
RE: Canada in the Rough
OK I finally watched the show this weekend. I had to do some programming changes to my Satellite (star choice ) but I now get the show on Sunday evenings which is perfect. The episode I saw was the Bison hunt which didn't have a whole lot of appeal for me but from what I see I would say its the best hunting show I have seen yet on television. Obviously advertising is always a necessity but the ratio of ad vs content is great. I'm sorry I missed the other episodes as I'm sure they were good also. Good work.
Suggestions for content: Snow goose hunting in Quebec ( Cap Tourmente, Isle aux Grues ) A weekly or bi weekly archery/bow hunting clinic that get into things like bow tuning, proper arrow selection etc. You could also feature a new product and test it for us. For example I will be buying a Summit Goliath self climbing stand this fall, it would be nice to see it set up and hunt from. Or test a bow like the APA line which are Canadian made in Saskatchewan and comparable to the big names. There are also tons of new flashlights on the market now and we all carry one of some type, it would be great to see some tested. Pop up blinds are getting more and more popular for both big game and turkey hunting, a segment on them would nice. Geez I can think of all kinds of things maybe you need to hire me as a consultant :D. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Some really great ideas Terry!
Perhaps you should be on staff.....but then I might lose my job! Believe it or not...the Goose hunt that you are talking about in Quebec...has been done, produced and aired on television already! Check out the web site www.canadaintherough.com for episode listings. Each episode will soon be available on DVD. $7.99 an episode. Hard to beat the price! Chris Hockley |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Looks like things really got active and I’ve only been gone for a week. Chris, I’m happy to see that you came aboard. I find the show to be an excellent show. Looks like Terry is coming up with some good ideas for hunts. Keep up the good work. I’m looking forward to some more episodes.;)

RE: Canada in the Rough
Have seen a few shows and also enjoyed it.
Now if an American network would pick it up our nieghbours to the south may alsoenjoy it and maybe more would venture up here for hunts. Best Wishes |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Chris, I have followed the last 4-5 shows and this is what my thoughts are. Now as most know , I live in the woods and if I'm not there I'm at shows promoting the sport.
Canadian In the Rough is doing a great job , but a couple of things that need to be addressed is After a hunt , most viewers would like to know What kind of Gun, Caliber, and equipment was used in the hunt. Talking a little more on some knowledge that may help out the veiwers down the road. Another thing is having some other hunters join in with Tom and get different perspectives from different hunters. I'm not knocking the show by know means only exspressing what comes to my mind when I watch the show and I hunt as much as Thomas does. I think this would give the show a jump out to have hunters tune in. Adrian J Hare QuakerBoy Game Calls Realtree Outdoors |
RE: Canada in the Rough
As the only hunting show on cable tv, I love it.
Like the others said, I would REALLY like to see a bow hunt for moose. |
RE: Canada in the Rough
I watched Dall Sheep hunting via helicopter. Even if the hunters did not know where the rams were, I guarrantee the guides did. Outfitters with aircraft do so much scouting these days that the hunt is only a notch or too above a fenced ranch hunt. Made me want to hang up my sheep rifle. I have watched and enjoyed other episodes. Keep up the Canadian content.

RE: Canada in the Rough
I have watched a few of the episodes and found them to be pretty good as far as hunting shows go. I'm a die hard hunter and it's nice to watch these to get you "in the mood" but they really aren't too realistic for us "true" hunters. What I mean by that is, we don't have the luxury of getting guides to do all the legwork for us. I'm not bitter so don't get me wrong, I realize it's impossible for the show to hunt all these different animals without guides. But sometimes it just makes it seem like I could shoot a monster antelope if someone was watching it for the last 3 years. I do have a couple of suggestions for you Chris:
1. Show a little more "realistic" pre/post-hunting tricks such as set-up areas, tree stand locations, feeding/bedding areas, rubs, scrapes & how to read sign. Basically get the guides to show us the legwork they do and how they go about scouting for the animals. 2. Do some comparison tests similar to those shopping bag girls. Take out 4-5 different products at different price ranges and put them through some real life testing. Take scopes for example, I have read a million posts on which to buy Leupold or Zeiss. Man wouldI love to see the 2 of them up against each other in different tests, light gathering, accuracy, warranty, etc. even against a Tasco & Bushnell...show us what is out there!! It's tough for guy's on a budget to try so many but I think your show could hit the spot. 3. I would love to see some good bird hunts, pheasant, grouse, partridge but more so, something we don't all do...blue grouse, ptarmigan, sage & sharptails. 4. Mule deer hunts!! it's always whitetails, I would love to see some in the prairies and in the badlands. I do love the fact the show is Canadain and I liked seeing the antelope hunt in Alberta since I'm in that area myself. Keep up the good work and I'm sure the show will evolve into a real winner with the viewers if you keep it fresh and unlik the other stuff out there. p.s. I'll help you in the testing area if you need a partner!! JDinAB |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Chris,
Just thought of another possible topic for a show. What about the annual pheasant hunt on Pelee Island, Ontario ? |

RE: Canada in the Rough
JD, unfortunately the "pre- scouting" used by almost all outfritters in BC, Yukon, NWT and Alaska these days involves flying the mountains constantly (usually in a super cub) scouting. Believe me when I say resident hunters get pretty tired of being "buzzed" while on their own wilderness dream hunt. The addition of the helicopter makes it just that much more unethical if legal.
Outfitters are well paid, should they be that lazy? Lets not forgett just whos game is being hunted with such efficiency. I suggest it is yours and mine. tz |
RE: Canada in the Rough
Hey, JD FROM ALBERTA, this is early in from Penna. I'm hunting the Edmonton Bow Zone the second week of Nov. this year andI was wondering if you could tell me what you think about this area and if you've ever hunted here. I'll be hunting with Primitive Outfitters. Thanks for any info.
|
RE: Canada in the Rough
early...I have never hunted the Edmonton bow zone as I'm about 3hrs away, but I know it's pretty good for whitetails. Ihunt North of Edmonton every year and I've seen some brutes. It's probably similar to Calgary in which there are probably some reall big deer but permission is tough. If you are with a guide, I'm sure that shouldn't be an issue. You timing should be perfect as they will be in prime rut! Just be sure to dress appropriately, it can be anywhere between +10C to -30C. Good luck & let me know how you made out.
p.s. what do they charge for a guided hunt if you don't mind me asking? JDinAB |
