scope for marlin 336
i just bought a marlin 336...i was woundering what do you guys think would be good scope for my rifle?
i dont know if this helps but i dont have the best eye sight and wear glasses. |
I'd get a fixed 4x. If you want super glass, look at the IOR / Valdata 4x. It's a great scope. Otherwise, Leupy FX II is a solid choice.
|
what about a nikon prostaff 3-9x40? what do think about?
|
I took the scope off my 336 with the intention of installing a ghost ring sight. eye sight could be a problem but the scope on a 30-30 just wasn't doing it for me. Most shots were 50 yds or closer. I would go with a 3x9 though just incase you need the extra magafiction for something. good luck

Leupold 4X FXII. Good luck.
|
I have scopes on all my rifles but that one. I hardly use it and when I do its for up close so its not worhless to put a scope on it I jsut didn't put one on mine.

IMO the Prostaff is a good solid scope. However, I think the Burris FFII has a lot better glass for not much more and it's the way I'd go.
What's your price range? I'm sure we could make some recommendations if we knew your price range. |
Mine came (used) with a Bushnell 4x Sportview WP on it. I figured that I'd give it a chance...... and it works perfectly on that rifle. I haven't had to zero it in more than once
(I hope I didn't just jinx myself- we're going up to shoot next wknd lol..) |
Your eyes
What's the best scope for your eyes. Not my eyes; a buddies eyes; your eyes. Or better yet, what scope for less money will meet your needs.
I'd go to a big box store and test out the scopes available for sighting, with your eyes, on a darkened area, as many yards away as possible. When I was young, I went one year with open sites. The next year a 4X scope. When older, went to a 3X9 scope. The higher power wasn't for shooting, it was for telling how many points the rack was. For a Marlin 336 I'd look for a shorter scope. |

So, did you ever offer up a budget? There are many very good choices. Check out S.W.F.A. as they have some great closeouts on Sightron scopes right now. |
I have a Vortex Viper 2-7X 32mm on my vintage 336. The scope has been discontinued but Cameraland has them on clearance. It is probably the best choice I could have made for that rifle.
|
well i took my marlin 336 out for the first time today i went to a rang that only went out to 20 yards its the only range close to me, and im not sure if it was because of me or my iron sights or the ammo that i was shooting ( monarch is the ammo) but it seemed to keep shooting to the right what do you guys think? i did hit bullseye a few time though, but im thinking i need a scope, im choosing between nikon prostaff 3-9x40 or the cabelas lever action 30/30 scope
|
I would go with a Nikon 2-7x 32. This scope is a bit shorter than the 3-9x40. Works real nice on the shorter rifles.
|
Last year I bought a 35 rem 336 and took off the 3 x 9 burris scope and replaced it with a 2 1/2 fix power leupold scope. Great combination for this rifle.

I would say yes. However, I only shot it at 100 yards. This scope is perfect for this type of rifle. Fast pointing brush gun.

I would go with any 2X7X32 or 40, the lower power works better for close range shooting. Can bump up the magifacation for longer range shooting. Someone mention using the higher power to check out racks. Thats what binocs are for. WHY are you looking at deer racks with a rifle any way ? Rule 1 of any hunter ed class is never point a rifle at something you dont intend to shoot, never use a scope to check something.

Having Scoped many Marlin 336's both 30-30 and .35 Rem and wearing glasses I've found it's hard to beat a Leupold Scope for Eye Relief, clarity, dependability, Warranty and Resale value. Every time I get away from Leupold I'm disappointed. Redfield is now owned by Leupold and their Revolution line of Scopes are good value for the dollar and made in Beaverton, OR.
With that said, If most of your shots are going to be from out to 100 yards it's hard to beat a more compact size scope for that particlar Rifle. That means a fixed 4 power Scope, or a 2-7 variable. If you need to reach out to 150yds the Leupold VX-3, 2.5-8x36 is one beautiful Scope. Let us know what you end up with! |
