What you need to use depends alot on the terrain you are hunting. Here in N. Idaho, I carry a light weight pair of 7X Nikons. But it seems like I mostly wind up using my rangefinder for spotting. Not much use for a spotting scope around here. In more open country, I would use a lightweight pair of 10X binos. For a spotting scope, it would be hard to use anything over 45X. 30X seems to be manageable.
