A 3X9X40 would work just fine, some will say you don't need a 9 power on a 30-30 because of the limited range, But with the new ammo out for the lever action 30-30's, Hornady Leverevollution, you can get more range out of you lever action..Muzzle 2400 fps. 100yds- +3.0", 200yds 0.2", 300yds. -12.1"..not bad for a 100 yard brush gun.

A good quality 2.5x or 4x scope is all you'll ever need on a 30-30. If you're so far away a 4x scope ain't enough, you're too far away to shoot it with 30-30 in 1st place.

I know a few people that think like this but I myself like to be able to zoom in to 9 power even if something is only 100-150 yards away. To me after about 50 yards I no longer like 4 power that much. I think it comes down to a personal preference. I'd personally go with a 3x9 as that way you can have 9 power if you want it or you can just leave it dialed back on 4 power if that's how you like it. Gives you several options.

Some ole timers think that a Scope has no place on a Lever action 30/30. 50 years ago they didn't need them so why now? Because We Can!!

I say a 4x fixed if you scope it at all, I'm a old timer I guess. 9x is for long shots, and a 30/30 isn't.

That's like shot guns with slug barrels, and Muzzle Loaders. How many put a 3X9 on these? When I shoot at the range I like the option to turn up the power to see the target better. So I might only be shooting less than 100 yds. I still like to see a closer view. To each their own, but what will it hurt to over kill on your optics?

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on one of mine, a Leupold Vari X II 3-9 on another, a Leupold VX II 2-7 on another, and a Leupold VX III 2.5-8 on another.

I like them all.

had a 4x mounted previously, put a 2-7x and its perfect, modern .30-30 are suppose to hit 300yds...so a 3-9 wouldnt be out of the question, but I think that 2-7x would be hard to beat on a .30-30.

I'm not an old timer, but, I guess I'm more of a traditionalist or something... I have an old Marlin .30-30 that originally had a small 4X Glenfield scope on it (I bought it off a co-worker I used to work with). I soon took off the scope and hocked it on eBay, because, well, it just didn't look right.

Just my opinion...
