Best scope for a 30-30?

What would you recommend for a 30-30? I mean... what brand is a good one, and what power for a 30-30?

Thanks guys.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

Put my nikon 2-7x33 I think on mine, great range for that gun IMO, looks great too, was on my .270, just not enough scope for me, so replaced that and took off my 4x fixed and put the 2-7 nikon on there.

I wouldn't go over 9x, i'd choose 1.5-4.5, or 2-7 probably, though 3-9x isn't outta the question, but if you're doing under 200yds, i'd stick to either of the first 2.

I'm not a fan of fixed powered scopes, but I'm sure some guys will suggest a fixed.....

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

I would recommend a very small 1-4x32 scope for a .30-30 (should you decide to put one one). I had a fixed 4x32 old Glenfield scope on mine, but I ended up taking it off. To me, it just looks better without a scope - but then again, that's just me. I know guys who put these monster 4-12x40AO scopes on their leverguns, and, well, it looks a little ridiculous.

A 1-4x32 Nikon or Bushnell on a real low weaver base is great for a .30-30.

Hmm... thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll take them into consideration.:)

I have a 4X32 Simmons scope that I use on my .22s. Do you think that will hold up well on a 30-30?

I would say no scope 30-30's arent meant to have a scope ;)

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

Too true.:D

However, I would consider using one if I used LeverEvolution ammo. But that's about the only time I'd put one on a 30-30.

I'd put a 4X on it and break out the LeverEvolutions. Great pair!

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

I would look at a low power variable such as a 1.5-4 or 1.5-6 ... something like that. A compact 1.5x4-40mm would do great. As for brand? In my opinion, Leupold Vari-X III and Zeiss Conquest lines are good scopes at reasonable prices.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

There are many scopes out there that would get the job done. Leupy's are good but cost / value may be over rated. YOU must decide what quality YOU want and how much YOU are willing to pay for it.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

Well, I won't be able to get one right away, but I'll be willing to pay $200 for a good scope. So... yeah. That's my limit for a 30-30, price wise.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

With a $200 limit, take a look at a Bushnell Elite 3200, Leupold VX-Ior Burris Fullfield. These are about in that price range and are from reputable companies. I have a Fullfield on a ML. It is pretty decent. The difference in these and ones running 2Xas much is that at about $450 - $500 you start into some good low light performance and a much crisper image.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

Ok, thanks for those suggestions. I'll get one of those as soon as I can, if I find I really need a scope on my 30-30. Which I may not, but I'm not sure.

I have a 3 x 9 on my Marlin 30-30. And if I had to do it over again, I'd put the same thing on it. 3 x 9's are the bread and butter of most scope manufacturers, so there are a lot to choose from with a price to fit everyones budget.

XS peep sight combo would be ideal

I have hunted with a 30 -30 and I would never go less than a 3-9x40. Too many times I have wanted to be able to turn the scope up to look a buck over to determine its age and / or size ( body and rack ). If you get a 3-9, you dont have to turn it up to 9x, but you can if you want. If you get one that is only 5 or 7x, you cant turn it up if you wanted to. With leverevolution ammo, you can take deer out to 250 yards. Everyone has their own opinion and likes and dislikes, but when folks say that you shouldn't do this or that, it means that they wouldn't. But if you like it, there is nothing wrong with that... Like I said, I would go with a 3-9 minimum .... and would consider a 4-12x.

As far as brands go, I would consider a Nikon or Burris....in that price range.

There are several good quality scopes to be had for about 200.00, but these are the ones I would choose from.

Hope this helps...

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on one, a Leupold VariX II 3-9 on another, a Leupold VX II 2-7 on my sons, and a Leupold VX III 2.5-8 on my daughters Spikehorn (for when she is old enough to hunt).

Poor ol' Retrieverman ... stuck with that tiny, under powered 30/30 ! I wonder how much meat the 30/30Win. cartridge puts on the table every winter? I bet it would be a staggering amount.

And I mustcompliment the R-man ... that was some kind of shooting to get that hog to drop right on that one rock !

your probably right but i use bolt actions for longer shots. if you hunt brush and generally shoot less than 100yard shots i couldnt put a 3x9 on a 30-30. it ends up looking kinda goofy and bigger than the gun itself to me. its also nice to be able to point and shoot without worrying about turning the scope up and down. if im judging game i always go to the bino-s. but have been guilty of using the scope once in a while.[:-]

To each his own. I don't think my 336SS with the Conquest looks too "goofy", and the scope is definitely not bigger than the gun.

I do agree that there are much better calibers for longer shots, but I only have a Leupold VX III 1.5-5 illuminated reticle on my Blaser R-93 Professional Tracker in 308.

I have a Marlin 30-30 that I put a Tasco 3x9 40mm $30.00 Wal-Mart special scope on (Ibought it before I knew any better)and it has functioned great over the years. Its taken many deer and never loses its zero. Its not super clear but I have never felt over scoped or under scoped.

I have a Bushnell 3x9x40 scope on my marlin. Combined with the LeveRevolution bullets they are a deadly combination.

RE: Best scope for a 30-30?

Must admit you have a dilemma here. I hunted for years with a lever action 35 remington and it never occured to me to put a scope on it. Figured I would get close enough and I did. I definitely would not put a Zeiss conquest on it since that, IMO, is an overkill. Odds are high you will not be hunting late at nght so light gatering is not an issue. The only reason I can think of honestly to put a scope of a 30-30 would be if you had some type of eye issue or focus issue. If you do need a scope get a low power Bushnell. Just my opinion of course

i have aold leupold 4x on my 336cs with over and under mounts. if its within 50yards i wont use the scopebut over that i want the lead to hit where i want it to!! withthat 4xim getting 1-1.5" groups at 100 and i also have the ability to takeup to a200yrd. shotwithout it i wouldnt even attempta long shot. ya theres times i would of liked a stonger scope but this one fits fine and i know where to put the X when it matters.with a 3030, bullet placement is important!! unless you want to track a woundedgame around for a while!
