Simmons Scopes???

Well, i am thinking about getting a 243 sometime and if i was.....would a simmons scope be alright until i was able to get a new one or to keep?

It would be used for varmint, predator, and deer....

THANKS!

YEP - I have a 4 x 12 x 40 on one of my .270 Winchester - Remington Gamemaster Rifles and it works great.

Provided you buy one of the Simmons scopes made after Meade bought them and redesigned their scopes, you may decide to stay with the Simmons.

The new Atecs are good.

I have had 2 simmons. One on an inline muzzle loader, and the other on a Varmint gun. The optics on both scopes seemed of very low quality.

Bailey

I personally wouldn't put a Simmons scope on any of my rifles. Their reputation for quality and reliability is poor at best. Save your money for a Nikon ProStaff or Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield II, or Bushnell Elite 3200. I've bought all of these scopes for less than $200.00 (in some cases much less) on Ebay with complete satisfaction.

Simmons is ranked above Tasco, which is ranked above BSA.

At minimum, I would go with a Bushnell scope. Their quality is a little better for the money.

I agree with Butch, in the same price range I would pick a bushnell over a simmons. What kind of money are you talking about with what sort of features? If we knew what you were wanting and in what price range we might be able to suggest something.

Ok...whata bout a Bushnel Banner???

bushnell banner isnt that bad, the features on the scope arent that bad.

I just bought a new Savage .223 with a Simmons 3x9x40 Blazer. I replaced it with a new scope, but was totally impressed with the quality of their scopes now. I gonna put the Simmons on a 22 or a .17hmr.

PS. I know Bushnell makes some quality scopes, but I've had such bad luck with them I'd rather shoot with iron sights!

Not bad... Go up one step to the Bushnell Trophy and you're in business!

Bushnell's go like this:

Top to bottom (i.e. a common 3-9x40 scope)
Bushnell Elite 4200.....................$289.95
Bushnell Elite 3200.....................$174.95
Bushnell Legend.........................$134.95
Bushnell Trophy.........................$89.95
Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn.......$69.95
Bushnell Sportsman....................$54.95
Bushnell Sharpshooter................$39.95

Edit: Prices came from (SWFA/Riflescopes.com) www.swfa.com

I would buy a better quality used/demo scope before I would buy another Simmons. At dusk I could see better with my naked eye than I could with the Simmons Whitetail Classic scope. I sold it for $25 and felt sorry for the guy.

RE: Simmons Scopes???

Ok, that is the type of information I was looking for. When you are talking a scope of that power with those features you probably will not find a decent one for that kind of money. Now if you were talking a simple 3-9x40 or something, or even a fixed 6x then you could probably get away with it. The banners are decent scopes for the price, especially for a typical hunting scope.

However when you get into the higher powers the cheaper scopes get a bit iffy. High power optics with adjustable parallax for sub 300 dollar prices are hard to find. While you might be able to see through them and possibly hit what you are aiming at I doubt they will do everything you want them to do well. Those features are just a lot to ask from a scope in that price point is all. Sub $200 scopes barely cut it with average magnification and few features. Once you double the power and add some fancy features they had to cut corners somewhere in order to hit that price point;). And that will usually be with optics and quality control.

I'll be honest I don't think you really need a scope that big either, you might be better off getting a bit less power and spending the money on a slightly better scope. I recently bought a .243 as well and put a 4-16 power scope on it. Just to see what it would it would do I put a stuffed animal about the size of a woodchuck in a field 300 yards away. I could see the animal well enough to hit it at 8 power. I could see it better at 16 power, but it was extremely hard to hold the crosshairs on the target. I used to have a 6.5-20 on a 17HMR and I never really needed that much power either.

And the other draw back is at that high of a magnification mirage becomes a big issue, especially looking long distance across a field. And the less lens quality you have the worse that is going to be.

I recently purchased a Mueller scope and I am pretty happy with it. I got the 4-16x50 tactical with illuminated mildots. Cost me 225 at gander mountain. It looks pretty darn nice for the price I paid for it. I compared it to a 420 dollar nikon monarch and while the monarch was better, it wasn't that much better. They have a 3-10x44 Tac II now that is supposed to have even better optics in it. The only down side is no adjustable parallax. And I just looked and Cabela's has a 3200 elite in a 3-10x40 for a little over 200 bucks. I would suggest that over a high powered banner for not much less any day of the weak. As a matter of fact if I had seen that when I was looking I may have gotten that instead of the mueller I got.

The Dusk to Dawn scopes are pretty decent for the money, but I couldn't recommend one at that power. I feel the scope I bought is a bit "cheap" for what it is.

Only my opinions and I would pick the banner over any of the simmons scopes right now though. Maybe an aetec if they still make them.

I used to really like the original Aetec. My dad had good luck with the old Prohunter 4-12X40. It has been on his .270 for several years with no problem what so ever.

Tmbercruiser,

My father, in a misguided effort to go cheap, bought one of those Whitetail Classics and put it on a nice Remington model 7 in 7mm-08. Wegot this gun forour boys to hunt whitetails, butthe scopehad such poor eye relief that they wereeither getting hit by it or were unable toget their eyeclose enough to thescope tosee the entire sightpicture. I replaced it with a Burris Fullfield II 3X9 and gave that piece of junk away.

I'm just wondering if you adjusted your scope - both in the eye relief and the scope mounts because something doesn't sound right.

With any scope - you could have one where if you didn't have the right scope mounts - that it would be too close to your eye.

Most of the newer scopes has more eye relief. But that doesn't mean that a Simmons scope was bad - just because it didn't have enough eye relief for you.

I wouldf be willing to bet that the rifle didn't fit "the boys'" and that they were not cheeking the stock the right way.

A scope with more eye relief is easier to look through when things are not proper - but will not lead to accuracy - when the gun is not positioned properly on the shooter.

A 7mm08 doesn't have that much kick.
