Rome, Georgia

What is the shoot like in Rome, Georgia. I saw where it is going to be held at Lock and Dam Park, should be some good shooting situations I would assume. How many of you have shot it before and what were your experiences there?

RE: Rome, Georgia

as well as i can remember, the terrain is fairly flat, and part of the range was logged. seems as though we shot a lot of uphill shots on the range across the creek. lots of dips and rolling terrain to trick the shooters. the yardages didnt seem to be a real problem, although the 39 yard aligator bit several people..........funny how one really tough target really sticks out in your mind, ill be looking for that one again[:-]

the folks were very nice and very accomodating. i only hope the weather is as nice as it was in wetumpka:) i actually got a little sun burn on my neck, making me naturally a red neck:D

The shoot in Wetumpka really was a wake up call for me. I really had to work hard to just hit the targets. The IBO folks and all of the volunteers that set up the range did a fantastic job of mixing up the targets and yardages as to keep me guessing. I have gone back to several local shoots to work on my yardage estimation and shooting skill before I make the trip over to Rome. Wish me luck as I am going to need it....

RE: Rome, Georgia

hoytshooter; The courses were not all flat, one had some down hill shots across some terraces that were very challanging. We had a 42 yd shot across the end of a pond. It's what 3d shooting should be. Sometimes the courses beat me but, if it doesn't kill you it will make you better! That's what we all strive for anyway. It will be a Great shoot! :):D

Hoyt shooter, I have some memories of the shoot at rome last year, drive 12 hours rest on a fold out bed that has been run over in the parking lot that takes three people to pull the bed into position so that you can put your feet where your head should be, go to find much needed food only to find every body else had the same idea, didn't know Rome Ga had so many poeple living there. 39 yard alligator that my bow flew further than my arrow did! Waiting two hours for a table so that all of us could sit together for dinner only to not sit together anyways. Driving home only to find that we missed a turn somewhere in Rome and ending up in Alabama. Driving home to find snow in Tennesee and warmer in New York than the weekend in Rome. Spending time with your girlfriend and friends from Kentucky PRICELESS!! doing it again in two weeks and can't wait!!
p.s. The shoot was great! Used every thing that they could to deceive you. Use your head and you will do fine. I try not to let the target behind me get to me only think ahead.

YOu guys are not doing anything to boost my confidence here, but I needed tha laughs after a hard days work. Thanks. I just shot a local BHA tournament and they had a 33 yard alligator across a beaver pond, I took a safe shot and scored a 5 and was glad to get it(LOL). No one got anything higher on it for the day. It looked a lot further across the water than it was. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of new friends at Rome. Thanks again for all of the good advice. If I can keep my nerves under control I will try to hit all 40 targets....

For goodness sake. Stop scaring everybody. The ranges are set to challenge your skills.
Funny thing, in Alabama the majority of misses were strong.
Got ya!
Leave the last target on it's own stakes. Don't bring it with you. Every one will be different.
We ARE trying to decieve you. We are trying to make you think..
Look at the target, the setting, even look at your feet.[&o] It is all part of the fun.
It's all good!
Have fun, think hard, shoot straight!

Yeah I read that "flat" comment a day or two ago and giggled. I remember shooting uphill more than anywhere I have ever been. This is a good range though. I will get to the site in PLENTY of time to finish the number of targets I plan to shoot that day.

bow pro, Im not trying to scare anyone, I think you and the crew are doing a wonderful job on making us think! It wouldn't be any fun if we all shot 40-up and you had to break ties with a flip of the coin! Looking forward to what you and Dan, Gene have up your sleeves for Rome. Rudy

Never been to Rome. Wetumpka was my 2nd IBO shoot. Valley was my first experiance with IBO, but I won't comment on that[:'(] Had a great time shooting and being a volonteer in Wetumpka. Met some great folks and was able to clear a few thing up with Ken. Thanks for takeing the time to talk to me Ken. It ment alot hearing it come straight from the horses mouth.:) I'm having to make a choice between shooting the IBO world, or shooting the ASA classic. So far IBO is winning my vote:D

RE: Rome, Georgia

brian from ga, i guess i base my idea that rome is flat on comparison with nelsonville, snowshoe, clymer, and that little hill we trec up at erie. also, being from ky, where you may shoot one shot with your bow over your head, and the next with your bottom cam buried into your leg, i would say rome is flat.....:D i will agree you will shoot some uphill shots, but there isnt enough elevation change to cause nose bleeds or altitude sickness.;)

i shot there last year and it was very nice. the range across the little creek is the one we shot the most uphill shots on, probably 65% of them....

Weren't there some ranges on down the road, I remember the MBR and few other boys shooting on down the road? Although the whole weekend I seemed to be in a fog from our 12 hour drive!! Not doing that this year we are coming coach class via Air-Tran air lines, fell like we is impotent rednecks from up north. Can't wait got 18 inches of snow here yesterday. Just your average St. Patricks Day snow storm. one more to go, has to snow on the early spring flowers. See ya'all in a week and a half.:)

Someone at Wetupmka tole me that they would have 10 ranges set up to handle all of the different shooters and classes. From all that I have read on here so far, Rome sounds like a great event and I am looking forward to it.

I agree with Keith on the lack of any real hill shots , but it was kind of tricky with the use of the rolling terrain .
Should be a great shoot again this year .

Brian from GA 03-18-2004 07:42 PM

RE: Rome, Georgia

You fellows must be from the real hills if the ranges in Rome are "rolling terrain". I shot MBO last year. We started one range just over the foot bridge. The other started about 100 yds from the practice bales. No they were not straight up hill shots, but there were some shots I would consider "uphill". To this GA boy "them's is mountains".

I have vivid memories of about a 45 to 47 yard gazelle, black buck, bles buck or some other African critter up the hill to the left of the road. I also remember a gobbling turkey up a hill and over a log that everybody fived. I think that was a mandatory score on that bird.

Not every shot was uphill. Once you got to the bottom of the range closest to the bales there were several really flat shots. I even remember my shooting partner getting a skip off the dirt to pull an 8 on the alligator. I think he underjudged it by about 7 or 8 yards. If he'd only misjudged it by 4 or 5 he would have gotten a miss. He missed it so bad it kicked off the mound in front and glanced up. However, my favorite memory was shooting back toward the river or creek that runs behind the range. The arrow went out right toward the 10 ring and when he got about 10 yards from the animal a huge burst of wind pushed the arrow maybe 8 inches left. It pushed it so far you could not stand at the stake and see the arrow. It was in the eight ring completely behind a tree.

It was a very good course last year. Shots in the woods, shots out in fields, shots in the clear cut. A little bit of everything. That is what makes it so nice.

See ya'll in a week.

Mountains in Rome??? How about pimples !!! All kidding aside guys n' gals---all roads lead to Rome, and all appetites lead to Ryans across from Walmart !!! All you can eat steak on Friday and Saturday night for $8.00 and some change. There's also a China Buffet across from Walmart by the strip mall---excellent food. If you knew me, and looked at my side profile, you'd know I was an authority on food---now if I could only be an authority on deciphering yardage on a 3D course !!!

Well I got good news and bad news.
The good news is the ranges are going to be even more fun this year.
The bad news is Dan Hart is going to Rome today to help create more fun for ya'll.:D A little more fun than Wetumpka.
I have visions of alligators two counties over!

There will be eight starting points in Rome. We have been hearing about quite a few shooters coming. If you can shoot some or even all Friday would be the day to get started. It would be like a walk in the woods, just a few friends and the critters.

Look forward to the concert. Tom says this band puts on quite a show.
I will see if I can find the names of the catfish and bar-b-que places.
Phenomenal (sp)food.

Hey Bow Pro didn't tell us on page one not to scare everyone. We can handle what you and Dan and Gene dish out, we just sometimes don't like our results from what you have dished out. Speaking of dishing out, guess their is some good food to be had in Rome, go figure, its an IBO shoot , where the location of the food is more important then the shoot location!!! See you Friday morning Ken!:)

Just got back from Rome---shoot was excellent-----Danno>>>---->you got me on the wolf(target E9)---I hit him, that's all I can say !!! All courses were excellent---very deceptive---you had to think hard, and shoot straight. Food was fantastic---garbaged up on shrimp n' chineese food at the New China Buffet on Friday, and pigged out on pork chops at Ryans Saturday plus desserts, desserts, desserts !!! Itchin' ta get to Pensacola !!!

I just got back from Rome also and I must agree with clearcut. The shoot and the food and accomodations were all excellent. I think that I might need to go to yardage school after this weekends attempt at shooting. I will be working hard on that aspect of my shooting for the next three weeks before Pensacola. I am sure that it will be just as good as the first two legs of the Southern Triple Crown have been. Can't say enough just how many nice and helpful people my wife and I have met at the first two IBO events for us. The Prime Rib Buffet at the Holiday Inn was great too! See all of you in Pensacola..

I heard they had to call out the fire department to put the fire out on a couple adjustable sights. Coulda been a rumor, maybe.
Glad ya'll enjoyed it.
Now then, what could we do that would change what you see in P-Cola?

Remember, the only sure thing is that there is no sure thing.
I had one lady tell me she had Dan figured out. He sets them all short-short- long.
Slight tactical error. If we look at them and there are tendencies, we change some!
Bring your brain and have fun.
See ya'll in P-Cola.

Hey Bow Pro, I think that I have heard that old saying before. Just when you get lifes questions answered, they change the questions.(LOL). I have shot both legs of the Southern Triple Crown and Dan has kept me guesssing now for 80 targets and counting......You guys keep putting them out there and I will try and keep hitting them. I have a perfect record so far on your courses, I have came back with the same number of arrows that I started with both times....See you in Pensacola.

keith meador 04-02-2004 05:54 AM

RE: Rome, Georgia

i usually look at the targets pretty close when yardage guestomating, and you usually see a trend of all high, all low, or all center arrow patterns. you know a target is set extremely well when the arrow holes are strung from the knee joint to the spine......we saw that on several targets in rome. i really like that. there were some shorter targets that you really needed to get, because the longer ones were going to get you if you werent careful.

ken is right about the sights going up and down. again, that really makes it tough. most sight changes were larger than 5 yards, and some as many as 36. very nice. the turkeys are a whole different critter all together. i doesnt matter if they are 13 yards or 49 yards. they are just plain mean. if live turkeys had teeth and a little attitude you would never kill one....lol i consider an 8 as even on a turkey. anything better is a bonus. i had a wonderful time, and i think ken is in for a little pat on the back for the weather so far, and we all know its kens fault when the sky darkens over an ibo event....lol

Brian from GA 04-02-2004 07:43 AM

RE: Rome, Georgia

I think a real good measure of the hidden difficulty of the Rome courses was the high number of 11s shot vs the low scores. Yeah some guys shot up but others made the mistakes. Take myself for example. 17- 11's and shot 16 down for the weekend. I had three 5's and a gaggle of eights (including the bedded buck across the lake, from the back stake I shot it for 49 and cuaght the bottom of the eight line. Most beautiful 8 in the world!).

The only complaint I heard and it might be good to look at this in the future... Seniors were complaining about having to climb the hills on G range and even a little on F.

well bartman, its kinda like this, I am not a paid shooter, so till they foot all the bills, then i shoot where and when i want and can, they understand my busy schedule at work, and its hard to shoot all asa events and IBO, I shoot all the local events and either asa, or ibo, however i do plan on shooting asa classic, as i will shoot qualifier to get there, as it is in columbus, ga which is a 90 trip for me.
they know i do a great job promoting there products and talk to as many folks as i can and help out where ever needed.I am moving up to mbo in pensacola, as i got my new bow set up, and it will makes its debut there, its a one of a kind ar34 wont tell the color, of it on here but you will not see another one like it anywhere. but it will stand out. hey bartman, i hope i answered to your reply . thanks for the concern tho, happy shooting, JUST ANOTHER WALKING BILLBOARD!
