Didn't shoot the league today but it has been going great. In four weeks of shooting out side we have averaged 97.5 shooters so far. The questions of the rules get sickening at times because it only brings all the would be experts out. What possible difference does 2 2"fletch make over a 4" one piece vane. I don't want to say anymore about it because it would make the subject important instead of the nit picking thing that it is.

I just finished sending a letter to the IBO on this very subject.
I am new to this whole bow hunting thing...and really love it! I was going to take up 3-D shooting as a was to stay sharp during the " off season" . Then, after reading the " rules" , I discovered that I would need to change most of my set-up to compete.
My sight has 5 pins...can' t use that
My arrows are CX selects 200 series with screw in points but I use Turbo nocks...can' t use those either.
I am just your average hunter trying to keep my skills sharp through 3-d shooting, but also enjoy friendly competition.
I guess I just do not understand why flechings should make such a difference in the rulings.
Is it not OK to take advantage of new technology. We do with everything else.
I want to shoot in the Hunter Class, but with the equipment I would be forced to shoot Open Class. What gives?
I think the whole thing is silly!

Hunter Class (HC)
A compound, recurve, or longbow with or without sights, may be shot with release aid, finger tab, glove or bare fingers. If a sight is used it will have no more than four (4) fixed or crosshair style pins. Circle pins allowed if all circles are the same size. Arrows must have screw in style points and a minimum of 4 inch vanes or feathers. Only one (1) single stabilizer being less than twelve (12) inches in length from the nearest point of attachment is allowed. A maximum of eighty (80) pounds of peak weight is allowed and will be shot from the yellow stake with a maximum of 35 yards. * - **

Mlaubner,
Personally, I think that I should be able to compete with my " open" class setup against anyone I wish. However, the people with pins seem to think that I may have an advantage with my scope and adjustable sight, the finger shooters feel my BT release gives me an edge, and the instictive shooters don' t even seem to want to discuss the subject. I know, I' m being a bit sarcastic, and I appologize for that. The point is, there are classes designed for your style of equipment, without going open. (MBR) Beyond that, yes if you want to shoot HC it is only reasonable that you should have to conform to the equipment rules for that class. The unfortunate part about establishing rules or guidelines for anything is that you immediately have to protect against everyone who wants to do an end run around the rules.

mlaubner,
Looking at your profile I get the impression that you are on the ball so to speak.
To really enjoy this game you should make up your mind that you will try to fit in and enjoy the shooting. In the area that I live the clubs for the most part use the classes of different organizations but try to be flexible so that everyone can play some how. After a few changes that may be necessary I' m sure that you will find a place to compete. When hunting season rolls around you will see that your skills may have improved and again the deer have a entirely different set of rules that do not pertain to your equipment or shooting style. Good Luck and learn to smile so that later you will be able to laugh.

mlaubner, if you just want to shoot to stay in shape, shoot what you have & enjoy. My setup didn' t fit HC, but at the local level I just shot for no score from the 35 yd stakes. I could have fun shooting, but didn' t compete for the trophies. This year I' ll change my sight and be HC legal.

bluejacket, fasstfletch, pdq 5oh,
Thank you for your comments.
I do not want to be interpreted as someone try to do an " end-around" on the rules. I am simply trying to understand them.
There are certainly marked advantages by the employ of certain hardware.
The point I think I am trying to make is that even with your equipment, all " hot-rodded" out I still probably can' t shoot it as proficiently as you do. In other words; just because I own a race car dosen' t make me a race winner or even a good race car driver!
I competed in semi-pro paintball for several years. It was not uncommon to see brand new players come to the field with top level gear, either for a casual game or for a first tournament. They looked good, but they " died" fast.
Granted, good gear certainly helps, but IMHO, it is really all about the person behind the gear.
Instead of grouping people with " like" gear, maybe we should group people with similar ability. Again, I am drawing on my familiarity with a different sport.
What this really boils down to is the purchase of a new bow with all the bells and whistles! Yeeeha! Which unfortunately, for me, defeats the whole purpose. I certainly would not take my new " 3-D" bow hunting. I would use my hunting set-up for that. The two would, in most cases, be mutually exclusive. Again, it just seems a little silly. But you better beleive I am going to give it a try. It just seems like too much fun.
Thank you all again for your thoughts.
