PA hunters doing their part

OK kids. For those that support scientific deer management and feel the deer are destroying the habitat as the DCNR claims, here's a question fer ya.
Will you be doing your part this year and hunting the state forests to get the herd down to the desired levels? If you support the deer management program I would think you'll be helping thin out the herd on our forest land to save the over browsed habitat.
If you are planning to contribute to the cause all I gotta say is have fun!
It's not easy hunting from sun up to sundown and seeing one or two deer. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it.Too many people are staying on the private land and not pulling their weight.Come join us and help out the cause.:D

Ha............

I for one do not support the state "plan" that includes the massive amounts of HR, but I definately support AR. I think you already know that though.

I do support a form of managing a deer herd, however I do feel that PA's plan is jaded with other things other than the well being of the deer herd. The biggest thing I don't understand is why kill more deer because the "habitat won't support the current herd" when you could instead slightly cut the herd and improve the habitat? The amount of money that could be generated on state land by selectively cutting timber is probably easily in the 10's of millions of dollars..........and then it would create habitat that would support more deer than the current habitat and then they would have money to fund other herd management projects. I would think they would generate more $$$ from this than the $$$ they generate from increased permits and from the tree huggers.

Yes, I know a good spot to start, If you live near Harrisburg, State game land 211 In Dauphin, Lebanon and Schylkill Counties. It's about 25 miles long and so over browsed you can see for a mile, Come and help thin them out. [8D]

No thanks lost horn, been there done that. The deer numbers in that area have been down for quite a while. If you check out the private land in some areas around the sgl you'll find some good regen. And the private land has more deer.

Not much State forest nearby but we hunt National Forest. Still plenty of deer there too. Does that count?

I just got back from my woods, I think best in the woods, seen some deer.
I know they are rare some places.
While I was walking I was thinking about grouse hunting, and the miles I drive to find good bird cover. On state land you will walk alot of miles to find any bird cover. If you take that logic to deer hunting ,how many of you are hunting the same places your fathers took you when you were a kid,to camps ,farms or just behind your house. If you don't own the land, talk to the people that do, not everyone understands how useless a stand of soft maple is. If they hunt deer give them some help ,if their hunting is better yours will be too. If they burn wood help them cut it.make brush piles with the tops.Find the old apple trees & cut the trees shading them. a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer will do wonders. It works the same as hunting a good grouse covert. All the birds are in a small area & so are the deer .You can make that place you hunt the one the deer like too. We are all going to live with fewer deer to hunt so why not make your place the best to hunt.
