Think about it a deer will roam over 30 miles
Hey bull, back that statement up with facts please. It's contrary to everything I've ever read about deer in my 56 years.

Wow lost horn a 2 mile range! I guess that piebald I got on my game camera had a twin 8 miles away! I guess that 135 class buck I was hunting and had pics of had a twin also. Because he was shot 4 miles away. I guess it wasnt him because thats over 2 miles. I am puzzled!

I got peoples attention with that statement. Good...I didnt mean every deer will roam that far. Its just thats how far some deer traveled that have been radio collored through out the U.S. and Pa. I think 26 or 28 miles is the longest distance they have recorded here in PA. I am just making my point that it is not rare for a deer to travel 5-10 miles. :D

5-10 is more realistic. It's that 30 that got everyones shorts in a bunch.

Don't overstate your case, it makes you sound like a Democrat;)

Do I support QDM? I am 35 and Yes I do! I practice strict QDM guidelines on my 3,250 acre lease in OH.
Do I support the so called QDM program in PA>? Heck NO!! Why? because it isnt QDM. Pike

I agree with you JPIKE... It isn't strict enough. I know it isnt near where it should be. But it is better then 5 years ago.

Bullmoose, the reason our deer plan isnt QDM. isnt our AR. guidelines its our overwinter DD. target goals, NO QDMA Biologist, Authur, Speaker, etc. would ever recommend to their members to reduce their herd down to 5-14 deer per square mile, if they did they wouldnt have any members. Here is a link for an article by QDMA and the MI DNR. about what the proper DD. should be for MI., PIke.

Thanks lost horn

What I think Bullmoose is talking about is the Buck dispersal study that the PGC. recently done, a button buck that the PGC. put a radio collar on traveled around 28 miles. Other state's have done the same type of study in the past ( even though the PGC. claimed it was ground breaking) and had similar results, that inmature bucks will normally disperse between the ages of 3 months and 18 months old, some only disperse a few hundred yards, some will disperse a mile or so, some will disperse 5-10 miles and on occasion they will disperse over 30 miles. On average once a buck reaches the age of 18 months old they are pretty much done dispersing and have found their new home territory. Once a buck finds the area of his likeing they will then have a home range between 1 and 4 square miles on avg. ( unless he is forced to moved due loss of habitat, lack of food etc.) Normally a whitetail deer will only travel up to a half mile to his food sources from his bedding area each day but keep in mind that many bucks might not use the same bedding area's every day and they might have different bedding and feeding area's that are miles apart from one another. Also keep in mind that the average buck will change his core area's 3 or 4 times from his summer feeding patterns in July/ august until the time he sheds his antlers in Feb/ March etc., so a buck who spent the majority of his time near a soybean field in August, could be spending the majority of his time mile's away come the start of the bow season. Also a buck that you saw last summer on numerious occasions will probably return to that same area summer after summer. Pike
