PA after christmas hunt...

Is anyone going out after christmas ? i will go out for buck with the smokepole and bow , and maybe hunt one day while off school with teh shotgun or inline for doe. here in 2B we are allowed to use shotguns and inlines for doe only, which isnt bad. Ill be hunting westmoreland county to be specific , and possibly some allegheny. where will all of you be hunting after the christmas weekend?

I'll be using my bow for buck in Armstrong Co., my shotgun in Allegheny Co. for doe, and the rifle in Washington Co. (Still in 2B) for doe...

I'll be out first two days with the bow. The big guy is still on the hill. We spotted him feeding last Sunday evening. I finally convinced myself to move my stand. Three times this buck came to within 45 yards of my stand the first season. I was very tempted to move closer, but it seems everytime I move my stand to ambush a buck, he walks under the tree that I just moved from. I'll take a chance and move a little closer. I still have this feeling he's going to stick it to me before I stick it to him.:D

Doublelung55,

I am hunting the late season, still after a spooky buck in a deep hollow here in KY. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, moved to Greensburg. I had some of the best hunts in my home state. I'm leaving tomorrow for PA, Dad is originally from North Irwin and lives in Allison Park. My cousin and I are heading to Indiana for some late pheasant and grouse hunting. Good luck this holiday season, hunt hard.

I HAVE A DOE TAG AND MY BACK TAG LEFT I WAS TOLD SINCE I HAVE A ARCHERY STAMP I CAN TAKE A DOE OUT WITH MY BUCK TAG FROM MY BACK TAG AND THAT I DON'T HAVE TO USE ANY ORANGE WHEN I'M IN THE FIELD IS THIS TRUE

BTBowhunter 12-28-2004 01:42 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

No, you need a doe tag to take a doe with the bow. The regular tag can be put on a doe killed with a flintlock and strangely enough with a crossbow but only if you have the muzzy stamp.

BTW, had a 4 pt half rack under my tree last night. Bet he'll be a dandy next year!

Got invited to an Allegheny County golf course propert tomorrow. The course is surrounded by long steep hills choked with a lot of nasty brush and a whole lotta suburban does that need killed there.

BTBowhunter 12-28-2004 01:43 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

Greekhunter, you are correct about the orange. Not required.

2B still has some. My buddy went to Pgh today and got 2

Got a nice doe yesterday with the smokepole.

If you are in a special regs area where they can still use rifles or slugs you need your orange.

I stand corrected T. you are right about the SRA's:)

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

I was out pretty much all day monday, saw only one deer that I couldn't get a shot at. No one was out near me. Lots of far off shooting, only one guy within 600 yds. Its very tough if you don't have people pushing.

Rybo,
That bonfire you was a standin' near, was scarin' 'em all cuz of the smoke an such.

Too damn cold yesterday!

BTBowhunter 12-28-2004 02:35 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

LOL it was cold!
Went to lower my bow from my tree and the handle was frozen to my glove. I guess sweat vapor came through the glove and froze when it hit the metal between the grips. Took a liitle bit of pryin to get the glove loose without tearing it up!

Whereabouts in the Burgh can one get these doe tags... Over-the-counter?

BTBowhunter 12-28-2004 02:52 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

OTC at the County courthouse, Grant St, downtown PGh, Treasurers office. Might want to call other County treasurers in 2b if you hate Pgh traffic as much as I do

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

Well today the last day of gary alts employment to the PGC , i was lucky enough to harvest a doe. Took the smokepole out with the cousin and his daughter and a friend , walkin in we were BSin about what drive to do , my buddy goes" y not do taht drive " and points to our left toward a thicket . Next he goes " wait , there is a dead deer right there, no wait its jsut bedded down" We all look at once and see the doe layin down , my cousins daughter shoulders her shotgun and takes a crack , but missed.... I had my thompson center encore with my scope out for doe in 2B so i was watchin as the dirt flew up infront of it. the deer stayed put not even flinching , so my cousin said to take it , and i put a shockwave sabot into it. just rolled over and lay dead.

That makes 4 deer for me tis year , killed one with every weapon i have to take deer , still have a tag , and play on maybe taking one more doe with my 22-250 barrel i got for my encore , that should do with 55 grain balistic tips and a well placed shot in the head or neck!

This year our freezer is almost full , the jerky jsut goes so fast!!!

Goodluck to all that are still out!

Went out this morning with the bow. 4 does and 2 BB's came in right around 7:30. 3 does and 2 BB's left around 7:35;). I helped convince the biggest doe to "hang out" for awhile..... in my garage;)

Time to fire up the smoker!

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

Congrats BTB...I went out with my buddy today for a little while with teh smokepoles again , it was jsut tooo dang hot out to see anything, i might go out around 330 with the bow for a quick evening hunt if i can getmy deer all packaged up by then, either that or i might have t break out the fishing gear , feels more like first day of trout then the first day of january!!!

BTBowhunter 01-01-2005 08:21 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

Thanks DoubelLung! It was too hot! Had to forego the afternoon hunt so I could get er cut up and in the fridge! Just dont seem like January!!! ( I'll be out Wed Morn again, no mater how hot!)

PS: Jerky should be out in time for the Steeler game! Will be sharing it with friends at The Oaks Next to Penn State New Ken at game time. All here are welcome to stop by and chew on some!

BTB... How far is PSU new ken from irwin? If you know where that is , i was gonna look into going to PSU mckeesport maybe next year and was wondering if NEW KEN is ne closer. thanks

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

Yep, I know where Irwin is. A buddy of mine has an archery store there. PSUNK is about 45 Min away. I'd guess that Mckeesport is a bit closer.

some great hunting around PSUNK though!;)

I wish I could hunt after X-Mas. We had a great weekend muzzle season (lots of deer - none hangin though). But that was it. It would have been nice to take a week or 2 off for the holoidays and then be able to come back for a week or two for one last cahnce. Maybe next year the DEC will institute something like this.

BTBowhunter 01-02-2005 06:58 PM

RE: PA after christmas hunt...

hope they do! Our late season is one the greatest times to be in the woods!;)
