RE: DE ARCHERS
keep me posted..i have seen a few bucks out, but nothing big at all
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
I live just west of Clayton. I've seen some does and just a couple of average size bucks. The wife had a decent buck cross in front of her car going to work the other morning just outside of town. We need some cooler weather.
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
cool weather is a ways off..i am thinking i am not hunting early this season...west nile is hitting to close to home for me. i usually hunt the first week..i may wait until november this year..they will still b there..the swamp deer never leave:)
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
Well, sat out for over 3 hours this morning and saw zip. Very unusual. I think the deer may be hangimg out 24/7 in the standing corn. Its thick and they're not being pressured so why travel in this heat?
lemond, i've been out twice now and have heard 1 mosquito buzz in my ear. I do spary my face mask and hat with No Stinkin Bugs which has proven to be pretty potent stuff, but I usually see and hear more of the blood suckers. I think the dry weather may have kept the numbers down this year. I guess there is a good side to everything. I'll be out the next few weekends and will keep updating. Anybody else seeing anything? RE: DE ARCHERS
saw a ton of deer this evening in valley forge park(pa)...bucks were everywhere. i hunted the deer there from our property years ago...buck galore. i saw a YOUNG ten pointer...very nice buck..there were 8's everywhere.

RE: DE ARCHERS
Was out and set up by 4:50am. Around 5:05am I'm pretty sure two walked by. I couldnt see a thing it was so dark but it sounded like one walked directly under the stand. Besides from that, All I saw were squirrels. The deer have to be staying in the standing corn. Until the corn is cut, I may have to find another area to hunt. We'll see what happens next week. Anyone else having better luck?

RE: DE ARCHERS
All I have seen are a couple does in s soybean field near my house in Townsend, nothing to write home about yet....
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
why arent the bucks showing in the fields??? is there alot of poaching going on?? r they hitting in the darkness and early am??? what???
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
lemond, I just dont know. It was cool this morning and I had a great view from the area I hunt. There was no wind and i got out early so i didnt spook em. With the drought and the heat, I think they are staying put (where ever they are)but unless something changes (cooler weather, wetter weather, harvested corn crops) its going to be a slow early season. Dont get me wrong, i'll be out there, but my enthusiasum is starting to wane a little.

RE: DE ARCHERS
Days are starting to get shorter and it is part of nature they can sense these changes and it becomes part of their survival "package"until the rut then they get a little carelesws again...

RE: DE ARCHERS
Got a monster on my digital video camera 4 weeks ago. He was walking through a over grown field at 7:30 pm. A main 8 with at least a 24 inch spread. Brow tines were around 12".
I think we saw him again Friday night while out spotting. He looks even higher with a few kickers. eddie |
RE: DE ARCHERS
EDDIE THAT SOUNDS PROMISING. i am hunting swamps and u never know what u will c. one day they r there and the next they r not. the weather sucks, but i will scout around this evening. i will keep yal' posted.
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
Watched a secluded water hole (a barrow pit) the other evening and had six bucks come in about an hour before dark. Two monster eights and a real wide six dominated the group. Was about 100 yards away.
Drove by one of my failing food plots and saw a real good buck in the back corner. Too far to see for sure points and all but he looked wide and tall. They are there same as always!! Things are looking good! Two weeks and counting!!! |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Heading out again tomorrow morning to scout another part of the woods I hunt. Its going to be warm! I hope i see something tomorrow. If I only see 1 it will be 1 more than any other trip. I'll let you all know what i see.
Any day spent huntin, is better than any day spent workin,, Duckmastor2 |
RE: DE ARCHERS
great info Debob, but what the hell is a BARROW pit:)..will the deer drink from the brackish water or are the fresh ones what they r looking for?? i know of a great little water hole near the house.
r u going to take one of the 8's on sept 2nd???..good luck |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Was stood up by 5am this morning. Around 6:30 2 does snuck up on me. Came a different direction than i thought they would. One headed around me directly downwind. She smelled me and took off with the second in tow. If it were the season though, she gave me a perfect broadside shot at 20yds. I would have taken it. Average size doe but the freezer is empty <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>. I'll be taking a break from the woods until right before the season. Let me know what you all are seeing out there!!

RE: DE ARCHERS
lemond33, A Barrow pit is a local term for a place contractors dig sand or fill for road or other constuction. In other words, they "barrow" the dirt. Doubt they'll return it though!!! Most little farms doown in Sussex have one or two. My dad's is digging one about 1o acres or so.
Unless I get wind of a better set-up, I'll try for one of the eights. I'm moving that weekend and time may be tight. Hope just to get out on the 2nd. I found some real big sheds in March from two real bruisers. Been checking the area regularily and can't seem to find them. May have to wait for the rut. I'm not sure if deer drink brackish water. I doubt they do so often. Went for ride last night to check on some farms I hunt near Georgetown...tons of deer out but the were very concentrated. Low ground with beans had the most. |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Ive been scouting the Nanticoke Wildlife area. No big bucks yet, but quite a few does. I think im going to go back in the swampy area next time I go out.
Last year their were more trails the deer were using. This year Ive only found three, but they are HOT, worn slick, "deer highways" , just dont know when they are on them. Im workin on a game camera to place out there. Picked up my license yesterday, and the seperate buck tags. I dont know if this will solve our doe population or not. I think most will use their buck tags first then maybe the doe tags if at all. Almost forgot.......I bought a new bug suit to use this year in the early season. Its the leafy mesh, and so far ( let me find some wood to knock on) I have not been bitten once by a mosquito. Actually I dont know if its the suit or not, because I havent even heard any buzzing around my ears. This dry weather has been good for one thing. RE: DE ARCHERS
AllenC, I think this $10 buck tag is a horrible idea. It does nothing to promote quality deer mgmt. All it does is make hunting a little more expensive. Now $10 may not be a lot of money for you or I, but it may be for someone else. That would make harvesting a buck a privilage for the rich (I know thats a stretch, but you see where i'm going). If they want to promote QDM, put some antler restrictions in place and Enforce it!
I might have felt a little better about it if they would have said the money was going to something to improve the deer herd (Research, law enforcement, habititat purchaces), but no, its going towards an automated deer check in system. The whole point of checking in deer is to keep an eye on the health of the herd. Im no Wildlife Biologist and neither are the locals at the Archery shop who check my deer now. Hell, they dont even look at the deer unless its a trophy that needs weighing and scoring! The state should provide places to check deer during the seasons. I know its a long season, and i know it cost money, but it needs to be done. They system now is a joke and this automated system will make things no better. It might be more convienient for the hunter, but its bad for the deer. Any day spent huntin, is better than any day spent workin,, Duckmastor2 |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Duckmastor2, No offense, but your post is innaccurate on several points. The new tag system attempts to focus the deer harvest on does. This is one of the underlying basics of QDM. Second, the money generated will be used for many of the things you asked: enforcement and research (land purchases are generally conducted with Openspace funds). The automated tag system was only conceptualized to make deer checking more avaiable for remote areas of the state. We all don't have a station next door nor do we all choose to use a butcher that also checks deer. No they don't look in detail at every deer taken. In fact, do to finance restrictions, they look at very few. Which brings us back to the reason the $10 buck tag was initiated...to increase revenues our voted in politions will not provide.
As for deer hunting becoming a rich man's game...it is...not due to F&W but because we choose to allow leasing into our ranks!!! We have become exclusive as to who we hunt with...we outbid each other for quality ground...we implement stategies to make our ground better and more productive, then we aim to keep everyone else out!!! If one lives in a glass house they should cast no stones.... |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Im not going to get into an arguement here DE because you do make some good points, but I think what i said is pretty accurate. Taking the buck stub out of the liscence and giving me an extra doe tag doesnt promote the harvest of more does in my opinion. If i remember correctly, you could harvest unlimited Does last year if you were willing to purchase a $10 tag for each extra deer after your tags were used. I bought one of these last year but never got to use it.
As for the $10 buck tag now, it says right on the tag and in the digest the money will go to the "funding of the automated check system and for improving Delawares Deer Mgmt program" Maybe if they explained the Deer Mgmt part better, i'd feel better about it. DNREC better be accounting for where the money is spent and give us hunters a break out at the end of the season. Like I said, i dont mind paying extra if it helps the herd. I just dont think this is the way to go about it. I agree with you about the money aspect of hunting. Like anything else, when demand rises and supply goes down, prices go up. I do think some leases are outrageous, but prices wont fall unless people arent willing to pay. Any day spent huntin, is better than any day spent workin,, Duckmastor2 |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Hopefully we'll end up with some type of antler restrictions in the not so distant future. Rumor has it, some of the public properties will be managed with a strict 15" rule. Here's hoping!! Delaware has a quality deer herd and I know DNREC is trying real hard to keep it that way or make it even better!!!
I've managed some of my properties following QDM standards and the results have been fairely impressive!!! If we could all buy into the concept, it could be phenomenal!!! |
RE: DE ARCHERS
i really dont mind paying the $10..as long as they continue to buy more land and good land:)
what type of archery setup is everyone using..here is mine: Mat blk mx 68lb 28in acc's muzzy, steelheads, and shockwaves peep..3 pins..out to 60+yds tru fire release...thinking about switching that ultra nok |
RE: DE ARCHERS
My bow is a Schafer Silvertip. It's a custom made recurve drawing 72 lbs. I shoot aluminum arrows tipped with shaving shard Wensel Woodsman or Zwickey Blackdiamond Broadheads. I use a shooting glove with built up tips. No pins.
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
I'll be shooting a Hoyt MagnaTec (1st year)
Set at 60Lb Draw aluminum easton arrows spitfire mechanical broadheads (1 1/2 in diameter) C-10 glove release The broadheads are a subject for debate, but they are twice as accurate as my old fixed blades. At 25 yds with fixed, no matter how much i practiced, it was a 50/50 chance for hit in the vitals. WIth the spitfires. Its been 100%. I've read all the opinions and test results on this website, but i'll only know for sure when i shoot a deer myself. The result will influence my future actions. Good luck to all in the upcomming season. 15 days away!! :) Any day spent huntin, is better than any day spent workin,, Duckmastor2 |
RE: DE ARCHERS
duckmaster..the spitfires are good, but the shockwaves and steelheads r SURE things.good luck with the new setup..
this evening i filmed deer in valley forge park...there were bucks everywhere. filmed a nice 10 pt:) as i posted n the past, i lived n that area and began my archery hunting in wayne pa. i was shooting deer from the park. they would come on the property..and..good night. i was on them. there are some huge deer there. |
RE: DE ARCHERS
r the deer still coming to the water in the evening??
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
Maybe its the price of our gear that makes this a rich man's game...no cheap bows in that list!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Lemond33, I had a set-up similar to yours near PrimeHook Reguge in Sussex County. At the time, the Refuge was off limits and the giant bucks that paraded past were awe inspiring!! I checked a couple other water holes this weekend and yes there stilling coming in. Water's drying with passing day, though, and many could be shut-off soon. An additional FYI, the acorns are actually fairely heavy this year. Many tress are dropping now...about 3-4 weeks early. Explains whey few deer may be out and about!!! |
RE: DE ARCHERS
I hope they start coming out to Nanticoke to enforce. I havent seen "the man" there in a long time. They have let people come in there with 4 wheelers who have torn things up. And last year I know more than 6 people were conducting a deer drive, shooting all over the place, drinking beer, throwing their cans wherever they wanted.
I hope the new tagging system works. I know some "trophy" hunters will buy the extra tags and shoot their bucks and leave the does alone. Im hoping I can shoot one doe and one buck during bow season and save the quality buck for the first day of shotgun. Sounds good doesnt it?? :) I shoot a Bear Vapor 300, Muzzy broadheads, PSE carbons, Trophy Taker Flatliner sight, Whisker Biscuit rest, peep , ultranock , and T.R.U. Ball release. Last night i went out again to a different area of Nanticoke and in my travels i spoked two deer, I saw the white flags I couldnt tell if they were bucks or does. I was back in some thicker stuff, looking for water that would run up in this branch, but it was dry. I also had the crap scared out of me when I dirturbed a Turkey that was roosting in a tree. The power of their wings during take-off WOW. I decided to hunt the thicker area enven though it had less trails being used. This puts me in the middle of food and water. We shall see. AllenC |
RE: DE ARCHERS
I'm shooting a 58lb Buck saber with 27" carbon express cx200 with Muzzy's and Shockwaves.
Hey coolerpup, I'll see you down Nanticoke, what do you drive? I'll be there 9/2, maybe 9/3, depending on what I see. Haven't seen any goodd bucks down there either, the past year or two. Hutnign pressure getting worse and worse every year. Too many guys walking around, can't sit still. "In heaven, even the fish have antlers" |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Should still be some water in the Nanticoke or in Broadcreek. There's are alot of little drainages that feed into both those waterbodies. A friend was fishing the Nanticoke near the mouth of Broadcreek last Thursday and told me he saw two decent bucks. He doesn't deer hunt, but he thought they were good one's. That's part of the WMA, correct?
6ptSika, did ever lay eyes on the big one you were chasing over in Maryland? Still moving down this way? |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Yeah, I saw him twice about a month ago, big as ever, he's gonna be a hoss this year. I'll be set up on him opening day, that's for sure. You can only see a little section of the field he likes from the road, so hopefully the poachers will miss him. I was down hanging a couple stands this past weekend, and planned on seeing if he was coming out the same place, but the boys in the club got a bushel, and we both know what goes well with crabs, but not so well with driving around looking at deer, LOL.
Still moving down that way, definitely, but haven't found anything decent yet, and it looks like I might have to ride this economy out. Every day in Jersey makes me love the Eastern Shore more. "In heaven, even the fish have antlers" |
RE: DE ARCHERS
6pt.....I drive a Maroon Dodge p/u with a cooler rack on the front.
Ill be there 9/2 for sure. I havent seen the bucks this year, but i have a good idea where they are. When you first enter the woods from Phillips, it has been torn up by 4 wheelers on just about any trail you take. Ive seen good sign further back. If I dont see anything from my morning stand, I have two others picked out for the evening. But you know how that goes. Deer will be all over my evening stands in the morning and vice versa. What do you drive?? Ill look for ya. I hope to make it over to Midlands this year to scout. I might hit there first day of Muzzleloader. AllenC |
RE: DE ARCHERS
Midlands is pretty good. In fact, that whole area around Carey's Camp is pretty good. Ever tried over near Old Furnace? When I was younger, that area put out some of the better bucks in the area,
|
RE: DE ARCHERS
I'm driving a grey chrysler convertible at the moment...don't laugh.
I see we frequent the same fishing site coolerpup, we both listed DE bow in our things to look forward to. You fellas get that rain down there last night, we had a couple of hours of pretty heavy downpour? Well needed. "In heaven, even the fish have antlers" |
RE: DE ARCHERS
i am glad to see that ihave brought everyone together. the info everyone has given has been great....thank you to everyone, but i have more and more questions. i need everyone to keep me posted about the water situation and the deer using them.
everyone is talking about cars...i need a truck..i hunt with my honda and when i shoot something..i have to call my mother's husband..that is a pain. i have 2 cars M3 and the prelude..i must get a truck...toyota 4runner is what i am thinking...used...97'..any leads on dat:) |
