Somebody actually mentioned this to me the other day in a bar (always the most reliable stories come out of bars, I know) in southern NY. My brother about 2 years back swears that he saw a cougar while turkey hunting in the catskills. Everyone he has told it to has laughed him out of the room, but I actually believe him. Is the DEC finally admitting that there might be some cougars in NY?

Its entirely possible. I won't rule out the possibility. People can laugh all they want. I also would like cold hard truth of this as well, but if we do have them in the northeast, it wouldn't suprise me.
Actually my father claimed to have seen one sunning himself on a laydown a few years back on Beach Creek mountain here in PA. He is definitely not one to lie about anything so his story may hold truth. He just said he can't exactly say for sure it was a mountain lion, but he doesn't know what else in PA that looks like that. He said it leaped off the tree and disapeared into the laurel shortly after he stopped to have a better look.
I can tell ya one thing. If in fact we do have them in the Northeast and we end up with enough of them that they aren't too rare to see, I'll be packin heat come archery season along with the bow. They are nasty critters and have been known to stalk people without you ever knowing they were there. I'm not a cat fan and don't care to have any of them in my home state.

My coworker lives in Wayne County and said that his neighbor hit a cougar last year with his truck and put it in the back to show his kids. About an hour after getting home, a DEC officer pulled in the driveway and told him he came for the body. I'm guessing they had it tagged and tracked a sudden increase in speed and/or distance and might have thought someone poached it. I don't really know the guy, so I can't say if this is real or not.
