CONNECTICUT

Any other whitetail hunters in here from Connecticut? Opening Day: 12 days and a wake up! I live in the Eastern part of the State, and have seen little change in color of the trees, I have seen some acorns on the ground here, but believe it is from the wind/rain that we've had. The farmers haven't cut the corn yet, one said the 20th, that's 5 days after opening day, hitting that food source early!

RE: CONNECTICUT

I live in the Eastern Part also. Can not wait to get out there again!! Do you hunt public or private? Good Luck.

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey "Snow"...I do a little of both, private, and public. I'm trying to save my private land for a while, and going to start out on public opening day. How did you fare last year? I got a spike buck, missed a few does, and shot a 6 pointer, but couldn't retrieve him.

Leverdude 09-08-2004 06:48 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

I'm in south western CT. Fairfield county. Glad to see other CT people on here.
Last year I Got 2 does & hit a 8 pointer but it was a bad hit & I lost him. A week to go & I cant wait! :D

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey,

Got a smaller 6 point and missed a doe (stupid tree limbs [:'(]) 6 days and a wake up now! Can not wait. It is supposed to be cooler that week also (low 60"s) which would be VERY nice. Good luck and post here any success stories! Phil

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey welcome Leverdude, and Phil that's great...I know I'm getting anxious myself....anything would be better than opening day last year it was so humid, It's good to see other Connecticut people coming in here, hopefully we can keep this thread alive. Looking forward to hearing from you guys, later...Van

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey Phil,

I know you said you lived on this side of the state, what town? I live in Voluntown, own a house that backs right up to the State forest, and I have State forest right across the road from me too, so it makes it pretty nice for me, I can walk out my front door, or my back door, and hit the woods. Good Luck Wed.

Hopefully we will all have success stories for Thursdays post.

Van

Hey fellas, Not a conn resident, but I do live in putnam county NY> four minutes from the state line. Any leads on public land? I"d like to pick up an extra tag but don't want a $100 non resident tag to go to waste. Thanks Chris

RE: CONNECTICUT

EOTN,

Theres a state park called Wooster Mountain just south of where Rt's 84 & 7 come together. They allow bowhunting for deer & small game. The book also says waterfowl but I'v never seen any ducks or geese there, there is a swamp on the east side of route 7 & there may be some there. Anyhow, I guess you could take 22 down to 84 & head east till you get to 7 & then south. The park starts right where 7 turns from a highway into a regular road. Theres parking about a mile (maybe less) south on your right. Theres a shooting range there also & I park in their outer lot. I believe theres better than 350 acres there with the larger piece on the west side of the road where you park.
Its very hilly & not an easy hunt but there are deer there. I nevere hunted deer there but have gone for squirrels with the 22 & have stumbled on alot of them.
Theres less pressure on the east side of the road but the state land boundries arent well marked. Still, if I was to hunt there I think I'd look on the east side as it backs up to a private community that I'm sure has lotsa goodies for bambi.

Dont know how far up you are but the range is a nice place to visit if your into firearms.
Lotta good guys & a nice place to shoot IMO.

I Hunt NY also in gun season. We usta go up to Washington county but the guy sold the cabin & land this summer so its either Duchess or Columbia this year. My uncle has a friend in Columbia with a piece of land & I think we'll be at his place this year. Supposed to be a hot spot but if it doesnt pan out we can stop in Duchess on the way back.
Thats 2 months away tho & I plan on having venison already. ;)

Hope I helped a bit.

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey DJ, I don't hunt that area, but I have a friend that lives up there, and he tells me that he sees plenty of deer up that way...Good Luck.

Hey Guys,
I live in MA, but hunt private land bordering state early bow season in Canaan CT. Good luck to everybody tomorrow!

Leverdude 09-15-2004 07:48 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

You guys get anything today? I went out this morning for a few hours with no luck & went back after work. Saw a small doe & a fawn but I let them go. Dont wanna blow my cover till I see a big doe or buck, not this early anyway. Next month I'da took the doe.
Hell I might stick her tommorow if it stops raining. First damn day & I'm second guessing myself. [:'(] Only 4 1/2 months left I hope I see more. ;)

Western MA Hunter 09-16-2004 06:52 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

I had the same thing happen. I let a nice doe & a little one pass... The little one must have just lost it's spots... It was running & playing in the field. I have never seen anything like it before. I could have shot the big girl a couple of times. I just couldn't shoot her with that little one! We'll see... Maybe next time.

SnowHunter 09-16-2004 08:36 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

Unbelieveable!!!! The same exact thing happened to me! 13 yards a nice size doe turns broadside. I draw, just about to release and see movement and crashing around out of the corner. I wait a second and there walks in a fawn in full spots still, goes over to mom and starts "eating". No way could I shoot here thais early in the season. Last deer I saw all day, and was beginning to have second thoughts! LOL Good luck this evening everyone!

CtBowMan - I live in Groton. I hunt up by you sometimes - must be nice not to have to drive! I hunt off of Tom Wheeler Road once in a while. You familiar with that area? Phil

Leverdude 09-16-2004 07:04 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

Saw what I think was the same doe & fawn this afternoon. They didnt come in today like yesterday & I think she knows somethings up. I'm gonna stay away from there a few days. Got a place down the road a bit & if its not pouring thats where I'll be tomorow afternoon.
Good luck guys.

Been through Colchester many times. Theres some hills going down to the river. And there are plenty of deer thats for sure.

CTBowMan 09-17-2004 10:25 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

This is amazing, I had the same thing happen to me, went out in the morning, didn't see anything, went out in the afternoon, and jumped on at like 1:30, then saw a doe and a yearling, the doe bedded down 30 yds from me, but behind some brush, not a clear shot, but the yearling, waltzed around, and I could of taken her, 20 yds, broadside quartering away, but she still had spots on her back, so I let her walk...didn't want to muck up the spot.....Monday looks good, I'll be back at it again. My buddy got a 4 pointer, and another friend got a doe.

CTBowMan 09-21-2004 06:37 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

Update....Should of taken the yearling....Went out yesterday afternoon, and saw 5 more deer.....Still haven't gotten a shot off...the yearling that I saw opening day afternoon, once again made me, she's walking around looking straight up in the trees, the Doe that was with her was 25 yds broadside to me, with a limb right across her vitals...so after the yearling makes me, she starts stamping her hoof at me, next thing I know here come 2 more does running right across my shooting lane, but I can't get a shot off at them because the yearling is looking right at me, so then they all congregrate kinda like giving each other high fives for making it through, then saw another one, but it was about 60 yds out.....Lesson learned.....next time take out the informant! Regardless still having fun....

Western MA Hunter 09-22-2004 08:16 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

CTBOWMAN... We are having similar seasons....
I had 2 nice does come out in the field about 150 yards out with about 10 minutes of field shooting light left... not much in the woods behind me.
I took my doe bleat can and did it about half a dozen times... Well, the big one came running right in full tilt... She stopped about 50 yards out and cut into the woods. The other came along but stayed about 60 yards out... Then 2 people came walking down the railroad tracks that run parralell to the field i was hunting and start making out and stuff out in front of me about 100 yards!... so, I hit the bleat can, got their attention and they scooted off once they saw me waving at them!
Usually I would sit another 10 min., but that frustrated me so i got my stuff and started to lower my bow.. as i did i heard a loud blow right behind me. The big girl had been coming in behind me and I didn't hear her because i was so busy getting pissed off at the people... If i had sat another 5 she probably would have come right out under me... Oh well... maybe today...

Western MA Hunter 09-23-2004 06:42 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

went out last night... for the first time in my CT bowhunting history I did not see ANY deer. Usually I at least see 1 or 2 at a distance...
I did have a crazy bat fly at me and then try and attack my broadhead... that was wild....

CTBowMan 09-23-2004 08:05 AM

RE: CONNECTICUT

Hey Ma Hunter....sorry to hear that....it was kinda warm yesterday, I think I'm going to take a break, I've got some housework I need to get done, and give that private land a little time to cool off, and hit it again next week.

Everyone, if you get anything make sure you post it so we can all enjoy.

Thanx for the congrats guys. :D Went out for awhile this afternoon with my uncle. He left about an hour before dark (Dont ask why) & shoulda stayed. A doe (Bigger than mine) came out & walked right by his stand. I was gonna take her but didn't, I still gotta cut up Thursdays deer. I skinned & quartered it & its in the fridge downstairs. Nice deer tho, I'm gonna bust his balls for a long time. :D

Going out tonight trying a new place, a friend is taking me to one of his places, says he had 3 does right under his stand last night, but he's looking for a big boy, and since he took 6 last year he still has plenty of meat, so hopefully tonight will be the night, I'll let you know. Good Luck all. -- Van

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is doing ok, just wanted to update you on my hunts, went out a few times and didn't see anything, and then last night went out, and got a shot off at a 4 point at 30 yds, but he must of jumped my string, no blood or hair, and no meat...[:@] Oh well I guess that's why the call it hunting and not killing, I rattled him in, so I think I'm going to have to take a couple days off next week and see how that goes...Well good luck everyone, and keep the thread alive. -- Van

Leverdude 10-19-2004 06:47 PM

Got doe #2 last night. :D Found some buck sign close by & tonight I coulda swore I smelled a doe in heat. Might be an early rut, or just an early doe, or somebodies scent wick. lol.
Good hunting!

Anyone getting anything?

CTBowMan 11-11-2004 11:11 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

I've not got anything, had a shot at a 4 pointer but missed about 2 weeks ago, think he jumed my string, it was a clean miss.....Thursday had a lone doe come in behind me but she was moving was to fast, like she was on a mission, waited to see if a buck was tailing her, but nothing, tried to grunt to see if she would come back but she didn't just kept going on her happy way.....with Gun season opening on WED, I'm getting nervous if I'm going to get another chance this year. [:@]:(

Leverdude 11-13-2004 09:12 PM

RE: CONNECTICUT

CT bowman,

Where are you? I'm in zone 11 & the season goes till Jan 31. We can bowhunt right thru rifle season also. ( I thought that was state wide) I hunt private property in residential areas so theres not much pressure from gun hunters & I just keep at it. We're supposed to wear orange during firearms season but I usually wear t to my stand or blnd & remove it.

Good luck!
