RE: mountain lions in NY??
Bill Yox,
Can't seem to come up with what mammal you're refering to. I have seen many animals in different color phases - Had a cinnimon colored coon hanging around the barn for awhile - I've seen a couple of odd colored black bear too - one was almost a blonde color - Saw that in PA. If you go down to Kinzua - there's a bald eagle net near the High banks camp ground area of the lake - I was fishing right under it from a canoe last summer - It flew right over me and it took a minute for it to register what I had just seen. Pretty cool. |
RE: mountain lions in NY??
I have tons of cinnamon colored coons on my trapping grounds. 1 of every 3 will have that tint.

RE: mountain lions in NY??
The red phase coons I mean are rust colored where they should be black, and creme colored where they should be brown. Sorta makes em look butterscotch. Theres no black, and even the nose and feet pads are liver colored. I dont know if thats what you guys see too, but they sure are beautiful.
As for bald eagles, I havent see any yet this spring, although I usually start seeing them cruising way high up, Im on the flyway, and now and then I see one come up off a roadkill deer. Funny thing is, as one describes them as huge, with the wide wingspan, I was always commenting on how they struck me as modest in size! They still are so impressive, no matter how many I get to see a year. JHoffman, Ill give you one more day to figure out your mammal with the red males and brown females. The prettiest black bear I ever saw was a mount I judged in Utah. A guy named Tracy did a beautiful job on it. It was an odd chocolate color, with very fine hair, more like a sow then a boar, but almost silky. Then all the tips where blonde, like a silvertip, but again, just different then any Id ever seen. As I recall we were referring to it as platinum. It was truly a one of a kind. |
RE: mountain lions in NY??
OK, I just talked with a good buddy that lives in Pa.One of his employess family owns a large Cattle farm around Montrose Pa, he swears last week a helicopter landed on his farm with out permission and released a Mountain lion.

RE: mountain lions in NY??
Look at it this way Charlie, the guy COULD have called the helicopter a spaceship!
JHoffman, check out the Red bat. Its the only one! |
RE: mountain lions in NY??
In fact, on second thought, Charlie, if you or I had a mountain lion in OUR heicopter, we sure would land ANYWHERE, permission or not, and get it out too! Sorry man, I couldnt help it...

RE: mountain lions in NY??
was it a BLACK helicopter?

RE: mountain lions in NY??
Bill Yox - Red Bat - would have never guessed that one.
My brother and me found some tracks that look to be about the right size for a mt lion but, they were kind of washed out from some rain that we got. Kind of hard to tell for certain. They didn't have any noticeable claw marks though - So I am pretty sure they weren't from a dog and they're too big to be coyote tracks - if they were from a dog they woulg have to be a domestic and a big one. Still looking for more sign though. Hey do Mt Lions leave scatching posts to mark thier territory like bear do. I know by my hunting cabin the black bears have a few trees that they just tear up everytime the come through. It is specific trees that they seem to return to though - just wondered if mt lions did anything like that - |
RE: mountain lions in NY??
I don't know what color the helicopter was.
I have known both these guys for over 25 years and the one guy doesn't even hunt. They have no reason to make up the story. |
RE: mountain lions in NY??
Not sure about the scratched markings, Domestic cats only use scratch posts and scratching to keep their claws sharp....... not so much as to sign their territory. Never seen any big cats in any nature show ever using a scratching post of sorts but the may.
They do however use scent more than anything to mark their teritory. All cats "spray" and typically in the wild most cats tend to spray the same bush, tree, structure along their marking routes. That's typical for most cats domestic and wild. As for Charlie P. why do ya gotta be like that. this thread was offtopic and you bring back ontopic with some lame arsed helicopter comment. If your such a non believer then why do you find it so consistantly upon yourself to flame away at others discussions. Ever hear the comment if you aint got anything good to say don't say it all. by the looks of these forums I spose not. Some people want to talk about it civily and they turn to other people and official to do so. We all could deal without people like you in this world. life is hard enough without crappy people like yourself messing with it. You criticize and belittle more people than anyone else on here and never know when to shut it. And what harm does it do talking about it no matter if you don't agree with it but yet being nobody was talking about it you bring it back up with something stupid like that. Are you that much a jerk in real life too or are you just one of these big mouthed forum posters that flame and abuse people in forums to cover your real life inadequicies? |
