RE: crossbow help in new york
i think cross bows for people who cant physically use a bow is great solution.
I am also all for crossbows for everyone, but not in archery season. The archer must hold back the string on a compound or recurve, but a cross bow does it for you. A crossbow is too much like a gun to be used in bow season(with the exception of the disabled). |
RE: crossbow help in new york
Buck alley,
It makes no differance what my physical problems are. It's a well known fact that the NYS Bowhunters are against crossbows. I would not bother with them ,too many arguments. Some how they think they only own the month of oct. and nov. and no one else has any right to them. I know there are a number of ageing bow hunters that are in my condition that still want and enjoy being with freinds and family during hunting season. oh! yea the woods too. I still support bowhunters, no matter what weapon they use, as long as its legal. Instead of arguing amongst ourselves over longbow vs. compound vs. crossbow, let us use that energy to argue for the right to hunt, shoot and enjoy the great outdoors. Happy Easter every one. Rich |
RE: crossbow help in new york
RWK, What condition do you have that prevents you from pulling back a 45-50 lb compound with an 80% letoff.

RWK, I simply wondered if you'd even tried contacting NYB for help? Its really too bad about your condition. I can understand your feelings. But we as a whole also need to look at the WHOLE picture as a state, and all bowhunters. Not just our individual selfs. I personally don't have a problem with disabled persons using a crossbow to continue during the archery seasons. But I fear it being a stepping stone to all out crossbow use for anyone during archery seasons.
As far as your conditon do you own a crossbow, and tried shooting one? Its sounds like your condition could be difficult to hold up a crossbow too. Is there any chance of future strengthening to possibly keep a bow up? I was thinking maybe a draw locking device for you could be another possibility also. I'd also like to add to bhw. The main reason for scopes being allowed on muzzleloaders, if you ever followed that legislation. Was for persons of lesser vision, and couldn't use iron sights anymore. Now everyone can use a scope. Your all for scopes, crossbows by everyone. Whats next rifles in turkey season!!!!!!!! |
RE: crossbow help in new york
Its funny most hunters I know are against crossbows, but most would love to get rifles in the southern zone of NY. A little of a double standard. If you argue that crossbows are easier then the bows, then you would have to support getting rid of compounds in favor of traditionals. I feel that anything can get more people into hunting is a great help to us all. Let the indivual hunter select his level of difficulty. I would like to see a seperate season, maybe along with Black Powder.
Good Luck RWK. I'll support the bill. |
RE: crossbow help in new york
Down here in Dutchess county the deer are all over the place. Unfortunatly there are also houses all over. The majority of locals are not hunters and don't like to hear gun shots. We need to thin out the deer herd down here and bow hunters just don't get enough of them. Cars do a better job. It's my opinion the most locals will accept bow hunting because they don't hear or see anything.
I tried bow huning for years and I saw lots of deer and almost always missed, some nice ones too. I finally took a doe and then hung the bow up and went back to handgun hunting. If crossbows were legal I would consider going back into the woods after deer in October and so would many others who have given up bow hunting. This could increase license sales and lower the problem deer numbers. Maybe DEC could allow limited crossbow hunting in high population areas. Just a thought. |
RE: crossbow help in new york
Kelincp, Are you talking black powder like a flintlock or the new inline muzzleloaders with scopes that out shoot my shotgun? That you can soak in water and they still shoot and shoot sabots? Not really that primitive anymore are they? I ahve friends that have switched to muzzleloaders to increase their range during gun season.
Warren, I'm confused why did you hang up the bow? Was it too hard? Why should we make it easier then it already is. If you almosty always missed you ddin't practice enough. I had to hunt on te ground alot this year because of a back injury. I could have shot numerous deer if I didn't have to draw back when they were twenty yards in front of me. How will legalizing the crossbow open up land to hunters? I hunt in a couple area that are urban, fact is many of these people just won't open up there land to hunting. I really don't have a problem with disabled people using a crossbow during regular archery season. The standards for who will be allowed a permit are to vague for me to write my assemblyman and support this bill, and I write alot of letters and talk with my rep alot. He lives about ten houses down fro me. I mentioned before I ahve a fifty precent permanent disablity. I don't deserve to hunt with a crossbow. Why? I can still hunt with a bow. I'd love to see a "real" late season not this five days we have now in NYS. Make it a combined season ML,Crossbow and regular bows. Yes I shoot a compound, a bow that must be drawn in the presence of the game you intend to shoot. |

Charlie P
Why did I give up bow hunting? Because I always missed. Why did I always miss? Because I always miss judged the distance in the field and because of buck fever. I practiced alot and I felt I was pretty good at targets of known distances but while hunting, the deer never cooperated with me. They always showed up in the wrong place or the wrong time. As an example, I sat in my tree stand all afternoon and about 1/2 hour before sundown I started to get cold. I hang my bow and start to put on an additionl sweater. Right in the middle of putting on the sweater a big 6 popinter trots by. In a panic mode I whistle to stop the buck and grab my bow and shot bare handed. I missed with 2 shots. I found I could get the same bow hunting experience while using my .357 mag. and not have to worry about the range out to about 60 yards. The problem is I have to wait until bow season is over before I can hunt. Another reason I have lost interest in bow hunting is that over the years the sport has become too comercialized and too high tech for me. I have a great respect for the true primitive weapons hunters, but the new generation bow hunters and black powder hunters just don't impress me. |
