RE: NY Southern zone
Ok Vestal would still be shotgun only. Answer my question how will this increase the numbers of hunters?
I can't believe where Pa allows rifles. Two of the area's I hunt are right on the Pa. border. Area's where rifles shouldn't be. |
RE: NY Southern zone
I'm with NY Bowhunter.......I would pass on gun season all together if they passed that kind of crap. I don't care what goes on down in PA. I live 15 minutes from the border and I've never hunted there! AGAIN.....how would rifles bring in more hunters? It's been my experience over the years that some guys will do just about anything, legal or otherwise, just to get a buck. This would increase the number of idiots who drive the roads looking for easy targets. It's bad enough with shotguns. If you want to hunt Deer, then HUNT them! Get off your lazy butt and try doing things by the numbers! I can only think of how many times I've seen bucks running in open fields, chasing does, or just feeding. Maybe 150-200 yards out. Well out of shotgun range. How many other "Hunters " have seen the same thing. Boy, it sure would be easy if we could just pull out the .270. I'll bet that 99.9% of the guys who are for this aren't Bowhunters. At least not successful bowhunters! I pride myself on being very good at getting very close to Deer....bucks and does. I have to work hard to get my buck with a bow. That's part of the fun. I follow the same program while shotgun hunting. I've never shot a Deer past 75 yards. Spend your time scouting and learning more about your quarry and when the time comes, you won't need to take a 300 yard shot. While I'm at it, the same goes for crossbows!!! Unless you're handicapped, pick up you freakin' bow in June and start practicing! By October, you should be able to hold at full draw and hit a Deer. I don't care if the effective range on both is roughly 30 yards. It's the act of picking up your bow, knowing exactly when to draw, doing so and holding, then leveling off on you target and making a good shot! All without Mr. Whitetail seeing you! Not just "Pick it up, aim and pull the trigger". Anyone who believes that the two are the same is an absolute idiot! And definitely NOT a real bowhunter!
Now this is all my opinion of course, although I know that I'm 100% right!!! SO THERE!!! J-BOW |
RE: NY Southern zone
none of this makes any sense to me. EVERYWHERE in Ny (except long island) you can uwse ANY rifle (.17 thru .500) to shoot coyotes day or night (except during deer gun season) . so go figure. is the bullet any less deadly because it is being shot at a dog? are houses and people EASIER to see at night when hunting with a .300 win mag at night????? explain this logic to me!
shoot, you can even use a 30-06 to shoot coyotes at night in the bow only zone 5 miles from the city of albany........ any opinions??love to hear 'em;) moose |
RE: NY Southern zone
How many guys actively hunt coyotes? OK....Now how many guys actively hunt Deer? Think about it.

RE: NY Southern zone
Personnally I'd like to see a 3 shot plug rule implemented for shotguns. I'm tired of hearing hunters flying lead during the season emptying their shotguns, reloading, and emptying them some more. Or here's a thought maybe having rifles in the southern tier would allow hunters longer more accurate shots, not needing to fly 5 plus shots of 1 oz lead through the woods!!

RE: NY Southern zone
thats not the point.
the point is, the slug only rule was made because of POULATION DENSITY , not because hunters are a bunch of nuts shooting over the horizon. So, does population density change when your shooting a coyote vs shooting a deer? didnt think so. And now you can use a muzzleloader with 200yds + range in Shotgun-only zones. so what is with this DUMB rule? Do you honestly think the rule was put in effect to handicap hunters and give the deer a fairer chance? nooooooo.......................... I don't see what the big deal is. I don't feel handicapped a bit by having to use a shotgun in Albany county. Given a choice, i would opt to use my .308. I personally wouldnt become dangerous to others because of it. On the land that i hunt i have tons of opportunities to take 100, 200 or 300 yd SAFE shots. And as far as more rules( 3shot plugs), how a bout this rule: AS PART OF THE HUNTER SAFETY COURSE, AN IQ TEST IS MANDATORY. Name one person who ever failed a hunter safety course. they pass EVERYONE. There are people who shoulndt be allowed to ride a bike, let alone carry ANY weapon into the woods without a psychiatric counselor beside them. Common sense goes along ways, and if people would just think before they act, there would be alot less problems. You know what? i just realized that i don't care about this proposal, and i don't care about what you can hunt with in what county. I JUST HATE DUMB PEOPLE!:D Merry Christmas to all and to this topic, good night;) -moose |
RE: NY Southern zone
Don't know what they are thinking these past few years as you can use your
muzzeloader during shotgun season. I have a muzzeloader that is as bad as most rifles at 200,250 yards. My shotgun is the same way 150,175 yards. The only thing that is diff. that I can see is that a rifle will cary out 2or 3 miles but I don't have to worry about that as there are to many trees in the way. |
RE: NY Southern zone
Charlie P.,
Well, I've been hunting in NY since 1962. Every new proposal is and was met with the "there'll be wholesale slaughter of hunters in the woods" argument. The list includes : rifled shotgun barrels; Pistols; crosswbows; compound bows; mechanical bow string releases, etc. If I'm correct and I believe I am, hunting in NYS is safer now than when I first started hunting. I haven't heard that the area in northern PA near Vestal is high in hunter accidents. I've been an NRA pistol instructor since 1973. What we would need is a media blitz on the necessity to observe more caution with the advent of rifle shooting in previously restricted areas. Dave C. |
RE: NY Southern zone
No, Dave not any more accidents that I know of . I do know a guy that lives down the ridge where I hunt that found two rifle bullets when he put a new roof on. In the three layers of shingles he was taking off, Almost lost the right to hunt the property, because some idiot in Pa. took shots he shoudn't have.
I could show on a Topo exactly where I'm talking about . It's a very steep ridge. there'll be wholesale slaughter of hunters in the woods" argument. What we would need is a media blitz on the necessity to observe more caution with the advent of rifle shooting in previously restricted areas. A question for you. How do you think Joe homeowner will react to these commercials? Do you think he will say "geez it's great that they want people to be more responsible with the rifles, because of the increased power and range?" Or is he going to tell the guys he's been letting hunt there for years ,he'd rather not have them behind his house anymore? Vestal would still be shotgun only I agree with that. Where I hunt in Windsor the shot gun side of the river I'd use a rifle if I could. Alot of the farmers up there already do anyway. Wish I had a rifle in my hand about 6 years ago when I watched a monster bed down about 200 yards below me. Answer this question. How is opening up these area's to the rifle going to increase hunter numbers? here's a thought maybe having rifles in the southern tier would allow hunters longer more accurate shots Buck Alley, Do you think those shots you hear are at walking, stationary deer or at running deer? |
RE: NY Southern zone
Charlie,
I guess I still hold to the opinion that there's more good (ie. smart) hunters then bad, but you have some good points that are hard to argue. As far as increasing hunters, it might then again it might not. I know there are plenty of hunters out there with a center fire that they may have purchased with the dream of going to a rifle permitted area. That iron may be rustin' & need dustin' but they won't part with it. Maybe it's a .243 or a 30-30 that doesn't punch your shoulder like a good 'ol .12 Gauge. Again, I don't know a lot of things but watching the hunting shows on the Outdoor Channel indicates to me that a lot of folks take rifles into the deep dark woods where a 25 to 50 yard shot is all you'll get and if they observe common sense along with proper hunter safety.....no problem. Right now I hunt with a compound bow in archery season and with a Mossberg 835 or S&W .44 mag. in shotgun season. I'm aching to be able to take my 7x57 tack driver into the woods for Bambi's big brother. Well I guess I've said my peace and will just have to see how this plays out. |
