DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
i was out today on a scouting mission, but i had the BLK max with me just in case:) there are rubs on some huge trees...i was shocked...really shocked. should i hunt the areas where i see 4-5 rubs in a small area???
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
WELL, from the looks of things, i must be alone here. i am having a ball though...i am seeing deer and they arent seeing me. i am just waiting and waiting. hey, i might not shoot a thing, but i am having a ball being in the woods and not seeing a soul. all of u guys that have given up.....thank you:)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
I spent last week trying to shoot some geese, but that has been almost as hopeless as the deer seasons have been. My vacations are pretty much through until Xmas week. I may venture out Saturday with the Bow if the weather/wind is good. The least I' ll do is throw some corn out at the leased place. I' d like to have it out at least a week before Antlerless Shotgun comes in. Gotta get one in the freezer soon! Times a wastin!! :D
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
i hunted the wind on sat...saw some does, but nothing to shoot. i was to far away to drag a doe out:) monster buck is all i had my mind on. i hunted from the T2...i love that thing in the wind. it is warm in there:) i am going to hunt the corn on wed...trails all around it.
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
i am out at 5am wed morning....hunting away from the corn hoping to catch them coming from an am feed. i am not sure if it will work, but i have to try something
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
hunted from 615 until noon...nothing and it was cold. the deer are on the winter patterns and i will change tactics next week. i am going to hunt closer to the tall grasses. i think the small gamers have forced them form the woods and corn fields to the grasses. that is where all of the trails are leading. we will see next week or mayb sat morning:) i hunted from the t2 again...it had all of the wind off of me:)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
If it wasnt suppose to be so damn windy tomorrow i'd give it a go in the afternoon. Cant beat going right after a snowfall. But, i'm not sitting up in a tree looking into a gale force wind. I'll take advantage of the fresh snow Sunday morning to scout a bit and dump some corn on the leased field. Maybe i can get bag a Doe during shotgun antlerless next week. With my luck this year, that will be the day the 10 pointer comes by,,,:(
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
well//i am not sure about the gale force winds, but there will be some winds. i would give it a go///on the ground. are there any pines where u live??? is there an area that the deer bed where the thermals are good??? i think i am going out. Hey guess what??? u might be right about the 10 pter....2nd rut will be the next week or so. good luck and use a drag rag:)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
The wind wasnt too bad so I headed out this afternoon. Went to the leased field but my stand was covered with ice and I didnt even think to bring anything to scrape it off. Since a broken neck wasnt in the plans, I went over to the public ground and was set up on the ground by 3:15pm. With 3 mins left of legal light, a doe came by in bow range. Never offered a good shot. Although the area hadnt been hunted in 2 weeks (if the sign in board was right) she was plenty spooky. Never saw me though and I was pretty much in the wide open. Maybe next time.
Heading down tomorrow to throw some corn out at the leased field and do some scouting. Anyone else head out today? |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Yeah, went over to my lease last night to pass shoot cans..they never came but I saw the same big six piont I saw last week. He'll be a great deer in 2 more years if he gets by. Did not see ANY tracks on the lease...guess the deer were waiting for evening and the snow to stop. Hey Duckmastor, if you are not seeing much on state...have you ever hunted The Gray Farm on rt. 9? Before I got my lease I hunted there alot. In fact there is a clover field that has a stand close to it up near the management house.(I think it is stand 10)Or you can get on marsh runs and hunt them when the tide comes in. Just a thought!
Good luck, DJ |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
DJ, Im not familiar with the "Gray Farm" Where abouts on Rt 9 is that?
Dumped some corn this morning at the leased place. Saw very little sign in the snow. I did see some though which is better that the '0' sign I've usually seen in years past. Maybe their is hope. Went back to the public ground and poked around. Man there was alot deer movement in there last night and I've found that next time I go out, I need to move. The Deer are nocturnal though. If this cold weather would hold, I think they'd move a little earlier in the evening. Lets hope. I had to chuckle though, I walked by the tree I sat next too last night. There was a set of tracks that came about 10 inches from where my stool was. There was also another set of tracks that came 5 yards from the tree. I guess it was an OK spot,,, if you could hunt deer at midnight... :D |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
early morning...last week i was setup by 530am. i am trying to cut the deer off as they return from an evening feed. it didnt work last week, but i know why. i was not all the way back on the tract that i was hunting. i know what the deer are doing now. they are not laying in the corn because of the small gamers....they are taking the long trek back to the edge of the river and bedding in the tall grass(7ft). the trails are hot and the dropping are yellow witht the corn. it is pretty remote and the underbrush is all green through the woods. the trails there are hot too. sooooo, this wed i will take the 15 min walk and see what it brings...hey, it can only get better.
time for the muzzy to eat:) |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Went this past Saturday in the afternoon. Hunted on the ground in a pair of secluded honey suckle patches. Deer sightings bordered on undelievable [:o]...saw about 40 deer total. Six were bucks the biggest being a clean 10 point in the 160's. Highlight of the evening had the biggest two feed in front of me about 20 yards for half an hour. Three little bucks chased a doe all around me...the big guy and his buddy (a monster 6 point) barely budged! It was an incredable night!!! If the weather stays consistent COLD!!!!), hope to get in there Friday and get a crack at the big buck;)!! Here's hoping!
Good luck all you die hards! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
what were the deer doing n your area?? feeding?? were they out b4 dark??
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
DeBob,
Do the deer in your area get any pressure at all?? Sounds like a GDamn petting zoo! :) Im just kidding of course. All power to you and good luck getting the Big Boy! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
debob yea where is this magical zoo at
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Duckmastor, the Gray Farm is between Woodland beach and Cedar Swamp. More closer to Woodland than Cedar...Very big area it is on both sides of road. I'm telling you dude you have to look into this place.
DJ |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
DJ,
Are you talking about the land down lighthouse road? The public land with stands that never requires sitting for a lottery? Or maybe the piece of property a little North of the McKay farm? Both areas look promising, but I've never put the scouting time in. I see alot of 'hikes' in my future come Feb and March! ;) |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
i am heading out...i do not know what to expect. i havent made up my mind where i am going to either...jesus:)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Duckmastor2, yeah man The Mckay farm..some how I got confused! Thats the spot! I also hunt on lighthouse road...that is a LOOOOOOOOOONNNNGG road! Anyway, the maps are on the DNRC web site.
DJ |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Yeah DJ. I've got all the Maps. Was thinking about checking out the Lighthouse Rd land but just havent had the time. Maybe when the seasons over. Thanks!
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Sorry guys for the late response...been out of town for the past few days[:@]!!! The Magical Farm is in Delaware...Kent County. Minimal pressure:). The few of us that hunt it agreed to bow only and we shoot only "Good" bucks. I shot the velvet buck I got in Sept on the same property! Between Sept and now, deer were noticably absent on this property...cold weather, heavy pressure nearby, and depleated food sources elsewhere seem to push them onto our property every year:D! Same scenario last year.
lemond, same deal as always...just hunting the food sources. In this case, it's a very (VERY!!!) isolated patch of honeysuckel. The were moving way before dark...they were there when I got there at 1:30pm:)!! Heading out tomorrow for a last crack before the doe season opens Saturday! Good luck every one! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
THANKS for the reply debob. i wil hunt next week. i have 2 doe tags that i need to fill...big time. i am in a serious drought and i am beginning to question myself. the food is becoming premium and i am hoping that this forces the deer to move earlier to get first GRUB. i remember seeing the largest deer that i have seen in 3 yrs about this time....he was after the bushes that have the red berrieson it.....
Hey, can u walk through the tall grass that these deer are hiding in???? it looking intimidating |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Lemond, I hear you when you talk about droughts. I'm feeling sick tomorrow ;) so I think I need some fresh air out in the deer stand. I'll hunt the leased place to see what I can see, and maybe even shoot. :D If nothings hit the bait piles and I see zip, maybe I'll stand in line for a public stand for shotgun doe. I cant believe I have to stoop to shotgun anterless to try and fill the freezer:( but you gotta do what you gotta do,,,,,
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Duckmastor, are you going to go to woodland for lottery? Perfect time to try and get the stand back behind the house on the Mckay farm...clover field right in front of stand marh behind you and small pond and high grass to left. Perfect spot!!!
DJ |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Well tonights hunt was a bust. Saw no deer. Only 1 set of tracks. Had my 15 yd pin on a fat assed raccoon that came by to chomp on my corn but I chose not to take my frustration on him. ;)
The winds good for the public land tomorrow so I'll try to get a stand. Time to dust off the 12 guage. DJ, it'll be Woodland alright. But, i spent last sunday roaming around after the snow and I know the stands to be in :D. It all depends whether I get the draw and if the deer decide to move before 0 dark 30. I'll let you all know how it goes. |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
is it shotgun next week///????
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Shotgun Antlerless starts tomorrow (Dec 13th)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
[:@] RRRRRrrrrggghhhh! Never dawned on me the bucks I saw last week were bedding right in the honeysuckle patch! Spooked them out when I got there yesterday afternoon. They took off across our clearcut and went into the neighbors woodlot...here's hoping the hunters in there have some ethics!!! Stayed anyway to see what would happen. Had a big goup of does come in at 4pm...shot one of the bigger ones:). Perfect shot...she went about 30 yards! Long drag (about a mile)...most of it through knee high water[8D]. Fun, fun, fun!!!! Decided to sleep in this morning!
Good luck this week everyone! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Congrats DeBob on another successful hunt! :)
I hear you about that drag. Thats what I would be looking at if I'd be lucky enough to get one where I've been hunting. Thats why I bring the old wheelbarrow. Its a pain in the ass having to make a couple trips back and forth to get it, but i'd rather push then pull one across the ground any day. |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Hey duckmastor you posted 618 am, did you not go hunting this morning? I guess you missed the lottery, huh? I went out behind my house tonight..saw a red fox must have gone 50lbs!!!!!!!! I never seen a fox that big before...almost thought it was a coy dog! Anyway. I'm following duckmastor's journy to getting a deer...maybe we should start a fan club or support group..what do you think??
HE HE HE! DJ:D |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
DJ,
Hunted the afternoon at Woodland. Check my next post. Put the old man in the hot stand and we put meat in the fridge! Its about F'ing time! :D Scott |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Congrats again Duckmastor...you have truly earned that one:D!!!
I went last night and was immediatly struck by reality...saw zero! Did hear one in the water behind me but is was so late, I couldn't see anything but shifting shadows[:'(] |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
can we hunt on xmas??? i think 'yes'
i will not get out again until xmas if i can...my schedule is nuts, but i will hutn alot in Jan if i can. time is coming down again and i would hate to go 2yrs without drawing blood. i had fun this season though. talking to everyone here is always fun. being in the woods is a blast. the deer should be feeding well right now and hunting the sources should bring us something. get ready for a great 4 wks if the weather continues like this:) |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
I only have a couple hours this weekend in the AM so I'll bring the gun. Dont have alot of time to track if the hit wasnt quite perfect. Then Im going out of town for XMas. Im off work though from 12/25 - 1/4! :D So I think they'll be plenty of bow hunting done wrapped around the new year. :)
This is just my opinion, but if a hunter can bag a deer in late Dec through the end of the season, thats a damn impressive accomplishment. Esp on Public land. Hell, they've been pressured by Archers since 9/1, shot at through 2 Shotgun Seasons and 1 Muzzleloader season and the last 2 weeks in DE are gun seasons. Im not sayin you are better off stayin home, but unless you have a private honey hole like DEBob (just kidding ;)) its tough from here on out. I'll be out trying though! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
Scott, I agree whole heartedly with your statement...but I would add that taking a deer on the northern tracts of public land ANYTIME is quite a feat!!![8D] Since you are off, it may be a good time of year to check out some of that southern public land....some of my best honey holes are immediately adjacent to some of these properties:)!! Get a little snow on the ground, and it could be quite revealing!!! Good luck!
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
guysssss......where is the best place to hunt turkeys in DE??? southern DE if u have a lead???
thanks |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
lemond, I do 99% of my turkey hunting in Pennsylvania and Maryland...we have some birds down this way, in fact we have alot on one of my properties, but the hunters here all hunt them like they are deer...they set up semi-permenant blinds and wait 'til one ventures by[:@]! That ain't turkey hunting!!!I'm a run and gun turkey hunter...put 'em to roost, set up in the am and call them in! If no-one shows, I burn up some shoe leather! Perfect style for moutainous terrain...not the flat land swamps of Delaware!
As for leads, in the absence of private land, put in for Nanticoke or Old Furnace WMA. Remember, you have to take a mandatory turkey hunter safety course. They start in a few weeks. Actually, check the guide book...the drawing may be over!!! |
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
uggggg..thanks for the input. i may skip it this coming season. i am like u. i run and gun...same when bass fishing. always on the go.:) heck, i havent even shot a deer yet:)
|
RE: DE LATE season ARCHERY:)
I wasnt feeling well this morning so I bailed on the deer hunt. Went goose hunting instead (took less effort). Shot 1 Canada goose and went home. Stayed in bed the rest of the day.
No hunting for me now until right around the new year. Keep on them. |
