confused New Yorker
Anyone else not seeing deer in Ny? I' m in central Ny (7f). I have NOT seen a deer in 6 days (morning or afternoon). I saw plenty the first 3or4 days of archery, but my lord it' s been dead. Scrapes are dried up, no rubs, no ****, no nothing!!! What the heck is going on? The weather has been a touch warmer than usual, but not exactally a heat wave. A single doe? A yearling? A button buck? something...anything!!! Wow it' s getting old. Any thoughts? Any rut activity?
sincerely, squirel watcher. |
RE: confused New Yorker
Ruttin action is pickin up for sure in the 8' s and 9' s. Had to nice bucks run underneath the stand on sunday, chasing two doe, gruntin the whole while. Counld' nt get a shot; they both stopped behind trees when I grunted at them. Been seein lots of does as well. Gettin in the stand early has been key for me, especially sits where its hard to get into the woods quietly. Sorry to hear luck hasnt been goin your way. I' m sure activity will be pickin up soon. GOOD LUCK!

I see deer everytime i go out just not in shooting range activity should pick up this weekend its going to be colder .Im in 4n and 4f .If you have any clearcut areas glass them during the day they seem to be laying down in the warmth of the day in these areas. It doesnt help with fall turkey season at the same time as bow season in this area either.

RE: confused New Yorker
i spent a week in upstate new york, adirondack mountain, cranberry lake area, from 18 - 26 Oct. out of seven guys in camp, i was the only one that seen any deer and that was three rear ends during the middle of the week. we got an inch of snow on wednesday evening and i was out there bright and early thursday morning, walked about six miles for the day and only seen two fresh tracks for the whole day. yea, we are all wondering where the deer went up that way also.

RE: confused New Yorker
I just returned from the Dacks as well, 4 guys hunted 8 days to see a grand total of 5 does. Not alot of sign to speak of either, I did find 5 rubs in a pod that also happened to contain a scattering of various deer bones (still pinkish with graying meat bits here and there) We gotta get the DEC to do something about the coyotes before there are no more deer to hunt. If we get another winter like last year that should just about finalize it. We spoke to many locals and there are only reports of 3 deer known taken. The taxidermist down Johnstown area had over 3 dozen bears to mount (how many fawns do you think will be spared next spring) 2 springs ago I took a walk behind out house which holds deer all winter (yards) and counted 16 distinctive areas of bones/fur where the yotes got the deer in the deep snow. Maybe a bounty on the buggers will get more hunters to get after the damn things.

RE: confused New Yorker
I hunt on 40ac in 3k. I hunted on 11/8 and 9 and saw nothing. Even with the colder weather. :( As I left on the dusk of the 9th about 1/2 mile down the road I saw a monster 10 piont in the middle of a nieghbors yard. Deer activity is definately down from last year. That badboy really surprized me. Maybe the lunar eclipse has something to do with the inactivity. Deer sign is way down except for two tree rubs that are 7" in diamiter. Big buck, maybe the one I saw:D. No scraps anyware, not normal.

RE: confused New Yorker
Saw three does and one buck (and one tail) last night. The buck walked right under my stand but spooked a bit when I drew my bow. He didn' t run far, but it was far enough that I couldn' t get a shot. First time I' ve ever drawn my bow on a deer.
Adreneline rush was nice, though. |
RE: confused New Yorker
VERY LITTLE ACTIVITY IN 5H ALSO. A FEW GROUND SCRAPES, BUT NOT THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE SAME PLACES FOR YEARS. I HOPE IT WAS THE ECLIPSE, BUT AM MORE APT TO BELIEVE IT WAS THE DEEP SNOW AND COYOTES.
HAVE ONLY SEEN TWO DEER IN 4 WEEKENDS. TWO GUYS ARE IN CAMP ALL THIS WEEK SO I HOPE THEY WILL REPORT THINGS ARE CHANGING. |
