Here is something for you Bowhunters,

Many know, but more do not know of this place and it is public hunting, but I can tell ya there isnt much hunting traffic there,It is located in Aqausco and run by the Md.national park and Planning commision.Aqausco Farm off Aquasco Farm road.I have been in there for the DNR checking on Coyote sitings (they are there) and am wainting to trap some for the DNR and MdP&P after season over.

In the past 3 weeks I have seen a couple guys coming out with some nice Bucks,A 14 pointer,a 10,and a few nice 8' s.This place is loaded,If you bow hunt and havnt tryed this place,Go do it........You will not be disappointed.

After this year ,I (My biz) will problably be in there next year to thin out the deer a bit for the parks and the DNR.

Alot of deer around guys,Have been working several Crop damage permits over the years,And have seen more this year than ever...Total so far for the year is
209 deer.

Good luck ,and Bow hunters ,Trust me,Go try this place out !!!

Steve F.

It is in Southern PG county.

You will need a free permit,Call 301-743-5161
They are only open from 8 am-1230pm M-F.
They will ask you for some info, which you can fax to them, and they will send you a permit(WMA permit) and maps of all WMA areas in this region.

I am temporaray in NJ but still do all my hunting in Md as I have been a life long resident except for the last couple years as this dang job transfer that brought me to NJ. Will be back for good in two years though :). I' m from AA county. Would be nice if we could exchange some hunts across the state, I have hunted the state from boarder to boarder except the far northern part. Will be down all week next week. Right now am hunting residental property in Montgomery Co off of Briggs Channy Rd.

I am in Catonsville, but do all my hunting in Frederick Co. (Middletown) where I have a farm and mountain property that borders Gambrils State Park. I bow hunt mainly on the Mountain and try and fill my crop damage tags on the farm and also Goose hunt as much as possible.

My name is Jason. My buddy Chris and I are fairly new to the hunting arena. We hunt in Montgomery and Frederick counties. We havent had much luck yet. We are still learning and would be greatful for any tips anyone could provide for beginners. We hunt during bow and shotgun/rifle season in both counties. The best place that we have found so far is Frederick City Watershed. Any general tips would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck to all!

James, Aquasco is in fact where I hunt in Southern PG County. In fact I was there last Saturday. They only allow 9 hunters per day and you must make a reservation. The property is shared by the Washington area Girl Scouts who has the camp grounds on the right just after you turn off of Aquasco Rd. Southern Maryland Beagle Club also shares the property, they have the house in the back.
I did not realize there are coyotes down there.
For some reason the property has not been farmed for the past three yrs. There are a couple of tractors and piles of fertilizer this year.
While I have never taken a buck out of there, I have taken a couple of nice does (must not be hunting in the right place)
Maybe I will see you down there.

James White 11-06-2003 07:52 AM

RE: Maryland Hunters ,Any here ?

Sideways,

The girl scouts have moved to an area that you will see on the left on Aquasco farm road ,right across the enetrence to the Farm.

The beagle club ,Yep been there a few times to watch the trails,But they are the only every couple months.

As far as the 9 hunter rule,Dont know who is telling you that ,or who is telling you ,that you need a researvation, that went out years ago,The only thing required is a Public hunting permit from the DNR,I will say there is always a bit of confusion about this location ,due to the fact that it is owned by the Md.Park and planning service and the DNR controlls the hunting,And they both do not know what the other is doing.

If you were there on saturday...You missed seeing the guys come out in the AM with those bigs bucks.

Not sure were you are hunting back there,But that is one of the areas with the highest concentration of deer in the state.

Hint....Hunt the River/swamp area knolls in the rear. Also the property line/power line/swamp area in the back left.

I drive through there since the yote reporting at dusk...and is very easy to count over 200 deer on any giving night.

Have counted 7 yotes so far,Will be trying to live trap them after hunting season, unless I can get a good shot with the traquilizer.

By chance if you see one and get a shot at one take it out,and PLEASE call me.

The farmer that originally farmed it died,And there for it was alowed to grow up,They are going to clear all the feilds, and remove the barns,Also there is a thing were they may,Start a controlled burn,to burn off some off the fields,As you noticed ,the tractors didnt get alot done, due to the overgrowth.

Good luck.

James,
Thanks for the info.
I agree about the confusion between DNR and Parks and Planning. I called DNR at Myrtle Grove (301-743-5161) which is where I got my public permit last Friday to make a reservation for this past Saturday and was told that it was full. Maybe Parks and Planning has made changes, DNR just hasnt gotten them yet.
I have been hunting the front part of the property, where the old barn was next to the old stake body truck. I have hunted the back part at the power lines before but had never had any luck, but will try it again.
I will be sure to give you a call if I shoot a coyote, I did not realize they have a pretty much open season.
If you are down there on any given Saturday, I drive a red extended cab Toyota Tacoma (4wheel dr) stop by and say hello.

I live in Westminster and am new to bowhunting, but I killed my first deer last Tuesday in Baltimore County(button buck) and then killed a nice 4 point this past Saturday...from the same stand. 5 minutes after I killed my 4 pointer, an 8 point buck came to my stand and I had 3 different opportunities to take him but I need to take another doe before I take a second buck where I was hunting. No problem though, I really enjoyed watching him making scrapes at trees right in front of me. It was quite a sight. I' m definitely hooked on bowhunting now!

Way to go on your recent bow kills, Riverwade. From what I read on your post, you seem to be getting the hang of bow hunting pretty fast!
Where do you hunt in Baltimore County? Just curious...

Thanks Jim. That reminds me I need to call the guy up at the archery shop in Hanover and thank him for setting me up and fitting me to the bow I bought from him. I am so confident with this thing within 20 yards and probably wouldn' t hesitate to use my 30 yard pin either but haven' t had to use it yet. These deer were taken in Owings Mills on a farm. If it weren' t for the rain we' re about to get, I was going to try to hunt Carroll County this week in the evenings. Oh well...

James, What do you do with all those deer? Do you shoot only does for crop damage or bucks as well? Just curious. I am new to hunting so I' m still learning about herd management. I was surprised to learn how many I could legally kill if I went to all the different zones and took advantage of the different seasons.(ie. bow, firearm, muzzle..) Definitely a lot of deer out there. Hardest part seems to be able to find land to hunt. Are there any clubs or hunting organizations that you know of to make it easier for newer hunters to find easier ways to gain permission from farmers and private land owners to hunt?

RE: Maryland Hunters ,Any here ?

Riverwade,

All Deer that we shoot is donated,I cannot see any deer going to waste,As there are people out there that love to have it.

As far as what I shoot,It depends on the Management permit,Most a true crop damage permits ,meaning we only take doe' s and occasionally some button bucks fall.On the other hand ,We do alot of Crop /Rubbing Damage permit management,These are generally tree farms.were the bucks destroy the young trees by rubbing them ,The tree farnmers,Nurseries take a big lose on them,But insurance will reemburse them if they show that they are trying to help stop the damage.

We usually come in /Called to do these when the farmer has got permits himself nad have had hunters say they would do it for free, but find out that a hunter or a group cannot really help ,due to time constraints and other things.

It is not an easy thing to do,Alot of paper work,Detaling plan with the DNR,Insurance, and alot of other factors.

Sad thing about it all,is after all these years of doing this,You kinda get tired of deer,I reworked my logs last night and it suprised me that in the past 5 years ,I have alone taken 1,993 deer.So I do have a little kick in me to make 2000 by the end of the year.

But there are so many deer left out there, the future is bright.

riverwade 11-19-2003 09:37 AM

RE: Maryland Hunters ,Any here ?

James, thanks for the reply. That is wild. You must be a crack shot after all those deer. What is your weapon of choice? You must also be good at gutting deer. I' ve only done two now, and know I have a ways to go. I need to get one of those Wyoming knives. They look like they just unzip the deer. Good luck on getting your next 7.

RE: Maryland Hunters ,Any here ?

Riverwade,

Many are taken with a 12 guage.Using sabots (I use Lighfields,Best I have found)
Got a Large scope 4x44 ..Like the way it draws in light. Can safely take them up to 125 yards. (No rifles allowed)

Some we take in or near residential areas,There I use a crossbow,Pretty good at 45 yards and under.

As for gutting,I use a Schrade lock blade with 2 blades ,A basic blade and a serated blade,Pretty much can gut out a deer under 2 minutes.
