I went Dove hunting Sat morning and was sitting on a high line ss from Bombay Hook waiting for the birds to move and 8 deer crossed in front of us at 10 of 7 AM. They were not 50 yards away in an open field.. Where were they six weeks ago?Across from BH

Not sure if you can pin point a time. Last Sat. saw an 8 pointer going to get a drink of water at approx 9am.
The last night, I saw 8 to 12 in a field munching away at 5:15pm.
If you can tell me EXACTLY when to be in my stand.....ILL BE THERE... :) :)

Seems to me Deer sorta conserve energy in cold lousy weather. After corn and beans are cut and gone, sitings in open tend to diminish.
IMO much depends on available food source,
human and dog(domestic or rabbit) presence. If some avail clover left, some standing corn, few beans left in open flds - Afternoon sitings are my best time.My best luck is from 3-5pm.All 5 of my deer this season have been taken at these hours. If some good thick woods with cedar, pine, bull brush cover(bedding),I have couple good stands in woods, produces sitings in Jan season.

Guess it all depends what kind of area your in.The more remote to humans and dogs = more deer sitings.

AJ52 where have you been? I was at a meeting in Dover last week and talking to you wifes boss, Clyde said he didnt even go deer hunting in Del this year. Went to PA with his brother.. Too cold to go this next seasonnext week.

AJ52, where do you live in Sussex?? I mainly hunt the Nanticoke Wildlife area, only because I dont have any farms to hunt.
Ive noticed the deer are hanging in thicker areas such as heavy laurels and pine thickets. Problem is getting into them without being detected (yeah right). Ive got a couple good locations picked out for the upcoming shotgun and muzzleloader seasons. Im still trying to fill my tags.

I used to hunt Blackbird all the time when I lived in Newark. I also spent alot of time hunting the C&D Canal, boy was that hard at times.

RonM,
My wife says Clyde is a BIG hunter.Hard to believe!I went to a remote area in PA last year, lots of Deer,we have bigger deer in De.More food and hiding places per SQ mile.

Story Time;(True)Was at Trappe Pond about 10 yrs ago,(August)fishing in head waters, when a 10 point buck jumped in lake and swam towards me.Got about 30yrds away before he smelled a "hunter" and turned around and swam back to shore.

Another Story;(Also True).Friend of mine, lives in Townsend, went hunting on his property,1st day of shotgun.Stayed in stand smokin cigs,(no food, just cigs) - all day.I had turned him onto puttin some apples out around area.He watched deer all day eat on apples, does, small bucks etc.Last 30 minutes of day, large buck walked out, thrashed all the trees and bushes in site.He shot it twice before going down.It was 22" spread, dressed at 210+-.

Lucky Bum!

Coolerpup,
I live in "Slower Lower De",Sussex Co.Best kept Deer Huntin secret in Delaware.

i can tell u guys r being funny about sussex...private or public??? r there alot of deer there???

DeBucks 01-09-2002 11:07 AM

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

NO no theres hardly any deer in sussex co.

and thier usually really small and have little racks ....

actually hunting downstate has the same quality of deer as there is upstate...just more public lands downstate

both the hooks (prime and bombay)NWR offer excellent deer hunting potential

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

never hunted bombay...looks good...r there alot of deer over there,,,i was looking at the regular map...how far is it from me...i am in dutch neck farms...

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

Sussex County Deer.......VERY VERY SMALL
Look like dogs running throught the woods, that is when you actually get to see one
My dad and me would hunt down at Summit near the train bridge and the pond. Once a deer spooked they headed straight for the elephant grass. Shoot I wasnt but 13-18 when I hunted it. Now that I know more, it would probably be easier for me.
We also used to hunt Little Creek. Havent been over there for years.

If the weather will stay cold, the hunting will only get better. Been seeing good movement in the am and mid-day and bordering on phenommenal in the afternoons. Find some sucluded food source (e.g honeysuckle patches), and the deer will show!! I have a 3 acre food plot with standing beans that's been very productive. Don't overlook winter wheat (the green fields) as well. The herds are bunching up some. Been seeing some good bucks! Tough to get in bow range! Getting closer everyday!! Don't give up just yet!!!!

so is the trip to bombay worth my time??? do u see deer everyday there??? what area is the best there

DEBOB...what does honeysuckle look like....i am seeing persimmon seeds in dropping still:) i also came across a bush that had a bunch of blue little berries on it...they were picked from...u r seeing movement in the am and early pm...looks like wed is a sit all day hunt:)

DEBob 01-12-2002 12:03 PM

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

lemmond33, Honeysuckle is one of the few green plants left (besides evergreen trees!!!). It grows to about waist high although when attached to a tree, it can go several feet overhead. It is a high protien food deer love. Its non-native to the US (its actually from Japan, hence the name Japanese Honeysuckle!!). It grows almost anywhere. The best patches I have found are secluded near good water sources like stream bottoms. It grows well in pine patches that are about ten to 15 feet high!! If the weather dips cold and/or we get a good snow fall, you will know where the honeysuckle is by following the tracks!! The patch I have been huting covers several acres. The trails are torn up but it is proving tough to hunt. I can hear deer, see an occaisonal back or horns, but getting close is tough. No good tree nearby!! Good luck. Hope it helps!!

lemond33 01-12-2002 04:57 PM

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

i was n a DEbob..i was n a pine patch the other day and i noticed the green in there...it was silent...a little warmer...and all this green foliage...mayb that was it...i will look online and get a pic of it. what type of stand system r u using that u cant get in a tree?? at what times r u seeing animals the most.

DEBob 01-12-2002 06:05 PM

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

lemond33, That sounds like it!! Like I said, you'll know when you find some, the sign will be prolific!!

I have climbers and hangons. The big patch I've hunted lately is a recent clear cut with no trees taller than 3 foot!! There are a couple of hollies that could cover a tripod, but I don't have one yet...YET!!! I'm seeing them in the honeysuckle in the pm, just before dark. However, I'm hunting close to a bedding area in the am and seeing alot more deer. Have had alot of close calls (this morning included) with some real good bucks. Again, no trees so I'm sticking to the ground. Very fun, but tough to pull off!!! My father has been seeing bunches of does during the mid-day. He's hunting a little meadow we planted in clover that butts up to a 15 year old clearcut.

FYI, tonight was terrible!! Way to warm and they never seem to move late in the year during a south wind!!! Hope the bottom falls out soon!! Just a few weeks left!!

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

nice reply...thanks...i am hunting with a new system i purchased this year...lonewolf hang on..it's awesome...i have the 3 sticks..the whole system weighs in at 17lbs..the stand is only 8..i attach the sticks..and i am up 15 ft or more. i will hunt wed morning..i found what that honeysuckle looks like..i will b at it in the morning on wed and hope to get something...have u seen any really big bucks?? what bow r u shooting??/

DEBob 01-13-2002 05:59 PM

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

I've taken a look at the Lone Wolf system. Very cool concept. Tried to order a similar step system made by Gorilla Treestands from BassPro, but they were dicontinued. That type of step will fill a major void in my
hunting technique.

Bucks..well this year has been, without a doubt, the best I have had in many, many years for seeing big bucks. Lately, I've seen respectable bucks every morning out since early December. Due to work and family, I've been restricted to Saturdays only. October was great and November was phenomenal!! I just seemed choke at crunch time!! Oh well that's hunting!!

As for bows, don't hold it against me, but I shoot only recurves and longbows. I have nothing against compounds, they just don't work for me. I always felt something was broke, out of tune, or about to fail. I figured the worry they caused was hindering my hunting so I switched to a recurve. For the first time, I picked up a longbow last year as a challenge and tagged out by mid-September. This year, I'm back to a recurve the late Paul Schafer made for me. Its a great bow!! A friend of mine is making me a one piece recurve for next year. I can't wait!!

Good Luck Wednesday!!!

they have that gorilla system at french creek archery if u r still interested in it. the lonewolf is sweet. have u ever hunted within a hedge row?? i hunt with a mathews blk max...the single cams take all the worry out of the tuning problems. i will let u know about wednesday when i return home. if u need the number to french creek..let me know

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

lemond33, I'll probably wait 'til closer to next season and get the Gorilla Steps later. I spent the Gift Certificate at Bass Pro on something else!! Good Luck tomorrow! Weather looks good! Keep us posted!

i was out this evening,,,,never got in a tree..stayed on the ground and saw nothing,,i think i am going to get closer to the food source they r using. i am thinking that they r staying closer to the picked fields that r now wide open...mayb the winter wheat fields....we will see. two more weeks and that is it...this is tough...where r the bucks:)

RE: COLD WEATHER SIGHTINGS IN DELAWARE

Just south of Laurel, De. the Deer are using a wide open field in the evenings, and a small open area with a power line running thru. Both are on private property though.
This morning I saw 7 deer feeding 75 yds from a house next to a few trees in an open field, 100 yds from the highway, and more than 300 yds from the nearest woods. My guess is someone (probably at the house) put some feed out for them. Nothing else that I know of would make them travel so far away from cover like that.
I am looking forward to this weekend. I have a nice spot picked out close to a bedding area, back in the deep woods. Kinda hard to get to without letting everything around you know your there, but i think I found a nice route to allow me in without alerting anything. We will see.
