A few years ago,I made some posts about eathworms having an effect on regeneration.A buddy of mine is a district forester from DCNR and he was telling me about it.No one has ever said that deer are the only cause. They are however,a huge cause and it makes no sense to add more deer to stressed habitat, regardless of the causes.

A recent magazine excerpt:
It has recently been determined that the whitetailed deer absolutely love to eat an invasive species of European earthworm, responsible for much damage to native ecosystems in the northeastern united states, and that if left to recover in adequate numbers, scientists believe that the deer can eliminate these invasive species...but we must act now, before they reach uncontrollable numbers. Audubon spokesmen have also admitted that the worms are directly responsible for the loss of trillium and hobblebush from our landscapes, as well as the extinction of the eastern cougar, eastern elk, and the woods bison. Al Gore has stated publicly that he believes the worms are significant contributors to the global warming phenomenon and the sudden rise of China to a global export power. The Game Commission is carefully considering an immediate stop to all doe hunting in the state, in order to allow the deer to launch their attack on the invasive worms. As an added precaution, all non commercial farmers and private gardeners are asked to comply with a mandatory cease and desist of all gardening activites as they unknowingly have provided the worms with perfect breeding habitat and are involuntarily conributing to the spread. - Associated Press |

Was your buddy talking about an area in PA or was he just talking about the effects of worms in general? If worms are the limiting factor controlling regeneration in some areas, can you explain how the PGC will manage the herd based on forest health? Will they simply keep reducing the herd until they realize the deer are not the problem? |

It also makes no sense to make them the scape goat of all our problems just because they eat what is left.

The exclosures prove that deer are the limiting factor. I suppose you have no idea how the PGC will manage the herd in those forested areas where worms are the controlling factor, since you couldn't answer my question. |

The funny thing is the deer are as much the limiting factor at 8-9 DPSM in 2G as they were at 14 DPSM, since the percent regeneration has not improved and it actually got worse in 2F.

I am basing my position on facts , not opinions. The fact is that according to the PGC regeneration is not improving in 2F and 2G and both units are still rated poor for forest health. So, if the herd is being managed based on forest health in those WMUs , why isn't the PGC trying to reduce the herd?
BTW, they won't know if they needed to fence those cuts for 3 or 4 years!! |
Now this adds a whole new meaning to the "Grassy Knoll" now doesn't it.:fighting0007:
