How many of you plan on shooting does
How many of you plan on filling every doe tag that you have access to?
I haven't shot one in a very long time yet I get one some times two tags per year. Basically it gives me a reason to be in the woods during fire arms season even though I usually tag a buck in archery season, and if by chance a doe were to come by me with an obvious wound I would put her down but other than that I have no real reason to shot them. With all of the available seasons and weapon choices I find it hard to believe that anyone that goes afield with the mindset of killing a doe would have any problem doing so. Just my thought on the matter.:patriot: |
We won't in Clearfield county but will in Lancaster county where the landowner requests they be shot.
|
Will most likely shoot one doe this year, even if I get a buck.
Didn't shoot a deer last year, for the first time in many years. Could've taken a doe, didn't, "wrong gun" at the time there were baldies to be had. Figure to atone this fall. |
I don't hunt PA ....yet....but I shoot 2 to 3 does per year, whether it be with a bow, muzzleloader or shotgun. I do most of my hunting in NJ and does are unlimited there. I'm doing my part to balance the herd, and also to fill my freezer with some delicous nutricous venison. I'm a deer hunter, not a buck hunter.
|
I always get my doe tags, but never use them. I'm in Juniata county (zone 4B) and we've been hoping to improve the population around our area in recent years. We had horrible numbers in the past but it's been improving lately.
|
I plan on one.:fighting0007:
|
In Montgomery County MD where I live and will be hunting, I can take unlimited antlerless and two bucks per season. I'll shoot what I can.
|
I plan on shooting at least 7 dmap doe in 2G.
|
i have yet to harvest my first deer so if its brown its down
|
NO, Only a buck ,IF I see the specific buck I have been watching. If I dont see that buck, well quess I eat cereal for a year. I have been seeing between 17 and 22 buck on my property, but only one will work.Let the rest grow up.
|
I am not a trophy hunter - can't eat horns. So, as the man said, "If it brown its down".
|
Got a 2F a 2D and several 2B's as well as 2 DMAP tags for 2F.
I'll scout ahead of time in all of them and will hunt and kill does where I believe deer numbers are high enough. I won't hunt does and neither will my sons where we see that numbers low. Not very scientific but we know our hunting grounds well enough to make that judgement. There are some parts of each WMU that I have tags for where I won't kill does either by landowner request or by personal assessment. I also hunt Illinois and often get a couple there. Both my sons will be hunting. The family can use up to around 8 or 9 and when we've hit that number, we will stop shooting does unless we're still seeing a good surplus and we have requests from friends and family for a deer. |
I've never met Doug, but bet you could eat 3 or 4 all by yourself, even if it took ya a few days?
:barmy: |
True enough but as I recall, you look like you are no stranger to processing the groceries either:wave:
|
I will be putting a doe in the canner.
|
1 doe max; for me no need to take more then I can use just me and the wife that enjoy the venison.
I will say the doe will be taken during the bow season or late M/l season:violin: |

True dat and proud of it. A man's gotta eat! I've been know to even share a time or two, usually when the dog starts to growl near the dinner table. Time to get me some venison in the freezer again, this fall. |
Does
in arkansas, we are allowed to shoot up to 2 with a bow. i blanked last season. i will try and get something in the freezer.
|
I plan on shooting 5 as early as possible during bow season in OH. and 0 in PA. Pike
|

With luck the day will come that you realize that there is so much more to deer hunting.
I suspect I spend more time hunting and kill more deer than all but a few here. I can say this not because I an exceptional hunter. I am not one of the Benoits. I say this because apart from the regular hunting season I hunt as a part of a crop damage program. My season is extended and I have no limits on the number of tags I can fill. Whether or not I kill a specific deer does not depend of whether or not it has horns to impress my friends but rather whether or not I can do it safely and humanely, have a use for its meat (much of which is given away) or another specific reason to kill it. As often than not I choose not to shoot. There is nothing mystical about hunting. I do it, we do it because we enjoy it. It is a chance to spend time in the woods and most of us enjoy the meat. As for communing with our inner predator or whatever, that is pure sentimentality, a form of tree hugging. As for the antler fetishists, let them live in their fantasy world. From a predator's perspective, there is no difference between a buck and a doe. In fact, I'd rather not eat the former if it is taken after the beginning of November. |
At least 5 here in NY.

Im from the B zone in Ohio and I will shoot one doe. Have to regulate the amount of does in the area or they might end up eating everything and your property will go to heck.
|
I normally get two or three before I even think about a buck. I like the taste of the doe meat better. Then once my freezer is full, I focus on filling my wall;-)
|
With a little luck I'll get at least one DMP but I'd take a doe with either my ML or bow if the opportunity presents itself.
|
i got 2 1A tags...and will buy a 2B or maybe 2..just incase...
only season im likely to hunt is flintlock..MAYBE rifle...slim chance i'll get to bow hunt...VERY slim...gotta see what happens with work(im in NC...season either ends at the end of sept or nov/early dec..we'll see..) i have a honey hole in 1A...im only allowed to flintlock hunt there...so i do plan on taking a doe or 2 there with the ole rock lock... and possibly a doe in 2B...see how the crop looks this year...i took one in 2B last year...you might find it funny i say i gotta see how the herd looks in 2B but my area is HEAVILY hunted and its all pretty much open land so the herd is VERY thinned out...i wont take does from areas that are lacking in numbers....im selective about where i take them... |

My point being, if I set my goals as you stated yours were, hunting would be more like getting a gallon of milk at the market than spending a day in the woods,to see a deer and kill would take me less than an hour on any particular day.
I enjoy it far more than to end so simplistically. But to each their own.:s1: There is where you are wrong. Unlike you I do not worship at the alter of big antlers. I am repelled by the t.v. shows where some one sits in a stand and pops a a baited buck from a few hundred yards and pretends that it is a big accomplishment. I do not romanticize the killing of deer. Killing deer, or killing anything for that matter, is a pretty mundane thing. Any 10 year old with a gun can do it. While I take deer, that is not why I hunt. I hunt even when I have real intention of taking a deer. Indeed I would argue that I hunt all year, though for much of the year I don't carry a rifle. |

I just find "The brown its down" mentality as juvenile or some what lacking as a perspective or reason to hunt. I relish the site of a red fox mousing or a flock of chickadees foraging through fresh snow it gives me reason to be in the woods. I do recall mentioning a post or so ago how simplistic the actual killing of a deer really can be, so myself I prefer to enjoy a more fulfilling day afield than killing the first deer I see. But once again, to each their own, if a fawn floats your boat have at it.:p |

Sure, all but the backstraps. I'm practically addicted to backstraps. Especially tender young doe backstraps!

Last I checked, big bucks usually, but not always have big antlers. But you are so caught up in your own aesthetic that you fail to comprehend what is said. So go chase your big buck and rub the foreheads of your trophies. I for one am having backstraps for dinner tonight. |
