TOM VENESKY

Rabbit hunting a bull’s-eye of an idea for kids TOM VENESKY OUTDOORS

Forget the baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolets.

Not that I have anything against them, but my vote for the prime example of Americana goes to rabbit hunting and beagles.

Anyone who has ever worn brush pants and a game coat – the one with the pouch in the back – and hunted rabbits with a beagle knows what I mean.

I grew up listening to the stories of my late grandfather’s beagles and his weekend rabbit hunts decades ago.

Beagle pens were commonplace in backyards

How very true. Years ago,you could not go more than every other house "without" an beagle and run in the backyard. The fire station was about a mile and a half from our neighbor hood. When the siren blew,it got drowned out very quick from all the beagle howls. Sure do miss the days hunting with my little bow legged bitch beagle. She was hardly bigger than a rabbit. She had two distinct bawls. A very high pitched, erratic bawl when on a pheasent and a deeper steady pitch when on a rabbit.

Thanks for rekindling those memories Denny!

That does bring back memories of hunting rabbits with my Dad and our beagles Honey and Charmer. I'll never forget their howl while hot on the trail of a rabbit. That was alot of fun when I was a young lad. It's been a long time since i've hunted small game.
