well what you think of maine as being big woods is a generlization. some will tell you the good deer hunting is in the farm lands in the southern parts of the state. that type of hunting isint much different than what you would hunt in most big whitetail states. now if your talking tracking big deer in the snow in the northern big woods of maine thats a whole different species.check some books out by the berniers of maine.ive hunted maine and it is a tuff cold hunt. if your use to seeing alot of deer dont even think of hunting there.

im born and raised in maine i prefer to head north. tougher huntiung but its worth it. im not a setter and never have been. i like to roam. track when theres snow and still hunt whenh there isnt. plus the deer up hnorth are always roaming so be using those techniques it serves as scouting also. the first coule of days up to camp ill track about any deer track doe or buck. they know whwere akll the other deer are and will always take you to them by the end of the day. biggest thing is not being scared of getting lost. carry a couple compasses. i have a gps but i think the one i have is a toilet so i dont rely on that at all. if a man had lots of patiants and could find a decent trail on a clear cut back off the beaten path he could score probably if he put his time in. my slef ide rather go to them. plus you see a lot more of the country side and all kinds of cool stuff. i get my maine and nh deer evey year along w/ my father bgut you gotta work for them.

I have hunted here in maine all my life as well being born and raised here.. I to had a hard time gettiong beyond that small buck at first. I have shot 3 big bucks since then however. By big i mean over the 200 lb mark and not so much as the rack size. Alot of deer here do not carry those monster racks that alot of southern deer have . It can be difficult to say the least about it. The last 2 seasons I have had to work most of them so I never really got into it like I wanted to. But they are here and just a lot harder to find and that is why we call it hunting up here..
