RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I've been so busy with nursing school, I still have yet to tune my broadheads, which will be tomorrow. But my bow is shooting great. Need to get the camo out and ready, backpack packed, new coat should arrive Friday. I believe we are spending all Saturday and Sunday morning at the neighbor's place about an hour south of here...he got some trail photos of some nice bucks.
With the way nursing is going, I should try and fill my tags early, as much as I love being in the woods. |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Heading down to camp Friday morning. I also am trying the Rages out this year. I was down there last weekend to do some final tweaking on shooting lanes, lots of acorns, apples and a couple of fresh scrapes. Good luck to everyone....

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I've been out chasing deer!! My seasons alreadly rockin! I bought a New Bowtech General in June. I wore out my last bow of 6 seasons. Went to Colorado for 3rd wk archery Elk season. Didn't get anything, but had a blast. Wish I was still out there! 9/27 was in my stand bright & early for my actual opener. Passed on 2 small bucks. That evening I had a good 7pt come in, and stuck him. He went 50yds & dropped. I'll stick with my trusty NAP Razorbaks! I passed on 2 more bucks, and couple doe since then. Watched a small buck run a small doe all over the woods up here. Been seeing scrapes & rubs all over. Now that rifle starts Sat. 18th in North, I can't wait to head south, and hopefully the action will continue!!
Good luck all:) |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Oh yeah, Saturday is almost here. Usually quiet this early but I love going on opening day anyway. Plus, you never know!

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I'm getting out sat and sun in the southern tier near franklinville. cant wait!!! Does anyone hunt Bush Hill state land in Farmersville? I want to check that area out this year and never hunted it.
Any pointers would help. |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I'm as ready as I've ever been in my life. Looks like a cool down is coming just in time. I'll be out morning and afternoon (with some all day sits during the rut mixed in) from day one until they tell me I have to leave the woods.[8D]
|
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I'm right here. I'm a Northern zone guy that moved to the Southern zone. I've had the itch to get out because we start earlier up there. Anyhow, I'm going to get out Sat. for the opener. Seen some nice rubs down here. Can't wait to draw on something!!!

I'm ready. Can't wait.

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
please tell me i missed something..... i would like to use rage broadheads but were told that they are illegal in new york..... because when they open there considered barbed(will not pull back out with out catching) ... could someone please clarify
|
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Good luck to my southern tier brothers! Stay safe and wear a harness.
I will be down to hunt with you in earlier Nov. Save a deer for me. :D |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I will be out in the am for sure and the pm and the next am...... lol I have been dying to get the season here. I am shooting very well with the new Marquis. I will be using the Rage again as they put such a freaking hole in the deer I got with it last year. To answer the question above the 3 blade Rage is not legal in NY the 2 blade is fine. I posted the actual DEC guy interpritation on here last month somewhere.
I took a half day today I need to get a couple chores done since nothing gets done once deer season starts!! Then a trip to the store for some provisions. Then the hardest part is going to be deciding where the heck I am gonna go! Good luck all!! |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I,ll be down there for the gun opener to ,
Save me one to , anything with 8 points or more would be nice , LOL. I no there a lot of buck rubs scrapes and sighn in the area I go each year , Seams like I either fill my doe tag,s or just end up filling my buck tag . Varies each year ...[&:] |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
A newbee to this site. I'm tired of watchin primos and dream season every chance I get and it's time to head upstate. I went out last week to scout it out a little bit. Some nice rubs, and trails, but the woods and marsh were very dried out. All the brooks and small ponds were gone. Deer will have to move to get some water sooner or later. Will not have my son to hunt with since he's in Spain for his last semester of college, but I'll send him some pics. We hunt on 22 acres, not much to write home about, but we just started bowhunting 2 years ago. He's takin 2 bucks, and I've passed on a few. Last year had a spike and 3pt'r goin at it, foolin around with each other for about 15 minutes. Finally a 4 pt comes down, butts them both, tellin them to knock it off, and they walk right pass me. The 4 also had a droptine to make him a 5, not very big, and it was great just watchin em. I decided to pass on him and my son gave me a ration of sh* that he had pictures of him and would have dropped him. I wound up getting a six during rifle season in Pt. Jervis, so at least I broke up a dry spell. Good luck to all, and may they all be larger than 8's. God bless.

The 3 blade Rage is illegal but the 2 blade is legal. I'm using the 2 blade but it does the same as the 3 blade just with one less blade. |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Well, only a few more hours to wait! After 35 years of bow hunting Allegany County, you would think I would calm down, BUT I CAN'T!!:D

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
The following I took from this site on the legality of 2 and 3 blade Rage in NY:
[blockquote] The following is straight from DEC on RAGE broadheads Mr. Erceg, I am familiar with the Rage broadhead. The critical issues for all broadheads, mechanical or fixed, is that they meet the primary legal criteria: (1) at least 2 cutting edges, (2) minimum cutting diameter of 7/8 inches, (3) are not barbed. Broadheads with mechanical blades are legal if the blades DO NOT form a barb or hook when the arrow is pulled from the flesh of a deer or bear. The Rage broadhead has a unique reward opening design which makes the broadhead appear barbed prior to expansion and when expanded. However, the blades freely pivot forward when the arrow is extracted and do not remain barbed in this position. So the broadhead is legal for big game hunting in New York. I have seen these new Rage Mechanical Broadheads on DVD and they seem to be incredible. I have had some people tell me they are not legal in NYS. I have had others state otherwise. Also, they are being sold in all the local shops so I need to have a credible answer before I get into buying some. Can you help me please. Attached, please find the website: www.ragebroadheads.com [blockquote] UPDATE!!!!!!!!! So, it seems that the 2 blade Rage is legal in NYS........3 blade is not...fyi. Shared by DEC clarifying original email. Sure, please share the info on Rage-2 vs Rage-3 with any of your bowhunting buddies that may also be concerned. Jeremy >>> "Erceg, Anthony" 9/5/2007 9:17 AM >>> Thanks Jeremy.....I do appreciate your follow up. It is great to have someone with such knowledge at the DEC that I can communicate with. Have a great day! -----Original Message----- From: Jeremy Hurst [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, September 05, 2007 9:02 AM To: Erceg, Anthony Subject: Fwd: Re: Question Mr. Erceg, I just received a question from another hunter that reminded me I should have been more thorough in my response to you regarding the Rage broadheads. Rage makes a 2-bladed and 3-bladed broadhead. The 2-bladed broadhead functions very well. However, the 3-bladed version does not consistently allow the blades to freely pivot forward upon extraction. Thus the blades often remain barbed. In my earlier response I was refering to the function of the 2-bladed version. RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
1st morning in the stand and all I saw was a feral cat and 2 squirells. Felt good to get up the tree and be in the woods, though. Was going to sit all day but I figured I couldnt justify eating a days pay with no action at all, in the woods, so I sat till 11 and got down and went work. Ill sit all day tommorrow though. Hows everyone else doing?

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog Best Of Luck, Stretch! Well it was the best time I've had in the woods today. It was my son's first time bow hunting. Morning watch we saw nothing. We went back in at 3:00. At 5:35 my son sends me a text message saying that a 4 point is coming my way and he missed him. I send a text back saying welcome to hunting son. at 6:25 I see the same 4 point coming towards me. I think to myself time for me to show him how it's done. Duh big mistake. I took a 30 yard broadside shot and he jumped my string so I shot right over his back. I text my kid and told him I just missed the same 4 pt he missed. He replied LOL and welcome to hunting DAD. I will saw I was not at all mad or upset about missing it b/c this is a story we both will tell for awhile. Well tomorrow is another day. Good lucks guys and girls. |

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Not much luck the first two days here. Beautiful being out there though.
I did want to bring up that while coming out of the woods Sunday evening with my Bro and Bro in law we were stopped by a DEC officer. He was a real decent guy. Checked all our licenses and the all of our broadheads.I of course had 2 blade rages on so specifically started asking him about the issue with Rage 3 blades. He said they have been getting a lot of calls on the issue so if you want to clear up this for yourself call the DEC. But anyway he confirmed to me that the three blades are illegal and the 2 blade are fine. Just thought that backs up my above post pretty soundly. Good luck out there! |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Well the season is off to a bad start.... seen a few bucks no shooters, had 4 coyotes at dusk spook off 3 doe sat night, and while walking out, down along the bean field therethey were waiting for me at theend of the trail. kinda makes ya feel helpless seeing four sets of glowing eyes and only a bow in hand.... well good luck to everyone...shoot em straight and knock em down,
OHHH ya almost forgot while me and my hunting buddy were walking in on Sunday morning we heard a buck roaring, I thought it was an injured animal at first because Ive never heard it in the wild but after a lil listening it was the ROAR. |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I bowhunt in Orange County, only hunted on Sunday afternoon, work day at the other hunting camp in the morning. Only seen one red fox go right by me walkin in.
I live in Yonkers, and you can't even take a bow outside and shoot let alone hunt. So the deer population has increased greatly, especially along the sprain parkway. Yesterday morning, driving to work, there's a little field and two deer were battling up a storm, looked like sixes go at it, and another buck, standing back in the middle, refereeing the fight, A HUGH 8 pointer. I nearly came out of my socks. I've always seen does there all the time but no bucks. I'm sure some guys tempt fate and hunt in certain areas, but the fines are astronomical, DEC always pop in and out, and it's just not worth it. I wouldn't mind seeing the bucks like that, but an 8 pointer. It's just not fair, raatttzz. |
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
WOW pretty slow start so far. Only action we had was opening afternoon. I sat 3 and 1/2 hrs in the rain and didn't see one deer. Good thing I'm off all this week from work.:D
|
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I had a great bow opening day, nice 7 pointer in the 120 range, plus the next day saw a nice 6 pointer. I'll wait til next year for him if he lives. I've seen plenty of deer, mainly does, but a few smaller bucks. Plenty of turkeys as well!
|
RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Great buck CWW, seen plenty of does myself, a few smaller bucks. Had a doe within bow range, but she had two fawns so i let her pass. Going out tomorrow evening, working O/T tonight, gotta pay for hunting supplies, lol.

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
I'm seeing a ton of movement and pre rut activity down in otsego Co. Managed to put the peices together last friday and was rewarded with this 8pt

RE: Where are all the southern tier NY bow hunters?
Gotta chime in here too! Another NY'er!
Season has been going pretty slow for me so far. I haven't seen much daytime activity at all. I was in the stand for a total of 24 hours (8 hunts) last week, and I saw 8 deer. Not good. There are scrapes ALL over though. I've probably seen more scrapes so far this year as I have in the past 5 years combined! I saw my first chase of the year on 10/27, as a small 8pt. ran a doe hard across the road ~20 yards in front of my truck. As hard as he was running her, he probably would have knocked my truck over if he had hit me in the side! I've had trailcams out for months now and have gotten plenty of pics. I know they're out there, it's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time. I went toa Charlie Alsheimer seminar recently and he said that the full moonon the 13thwill really kick the rut into high gear! He said that the bucks will be rutting hard and on their feet for the gun opener. We'll see! I'm on vacation for the whole month of November, with the exception of 2 days. Figured I'd go into workfor a couple of days to"rest up"! ;) |
