February 26, 2008 08:08:00
The Department of Environmental Conservation reports that there was an increase in the number of deer taken by hunters last year. The DEC says approximately 220,000 deer were shot in the 2007 season, up 16 percent from the previous year. And the most deer were taken in Steuben County, where hunters tagged 12,796 deer, some 2500 more than in 2006. Allegany County was next, with 10,229 deer taken.

I'm sorry, but I would have to say Steuben County is not one of the largest counties in the state. St. Lawrence County and some of the other Adirondack Counties are almost twice the size of Steuben if not more. Steuben has the most deer taken because there are tons of deer there because the conditions are pretty much the best in the state.

Nope. My son and I were out most of the day, but apparently few others were in the area we hunt in. But then you apparentlyforgot that NY's "firearms"deerseason started over a week before ours did, in PA.

Thats where me and a few buddies go every year for the doe season .
I filled all 3 of my doe tags last winter .
My buddy got none .
Another group of 4 hunters we go with shot 2 bucks and 6 does .
Not to bad for only hunting 2 and 1/2 days.
Normaly I get a decent buck abought 85% of the time ...
