RE: Snort/Wheeze no good in PA?????
i bought a lohman snort call like 12 years ago. most times it sends them running.in rae cases it calms deer down that are already spooky. i can take my grunt tube and turn it backwards and say the word "SHOE" to replicate the snort sound. i only use it when i get a bunch of doe-s around me and i want to get out of the stand without letting them know im coming down out of the tree. one good snort and there gone usually. dont know about the wheeze part. i have never herd a deer make that sound in 31 years of hunting.

RE: Snort/Wheeze no good in PA?????
I had a buck pass me by in rifle season three years agothrough some very thick brush and I could not get a shot. In desperation I snort wheezed with my mouth and to my suprise this buck came running through the brush right to me. Needless to say I filled my tag. This was in Berks County PA! I agree that you need to be in the right place at the right time and also have the right buck for this to work!

RE: Snort/Wheeze no good in PA?????
I've only ever seen one PA buck snort wheeze in all my years hunting here. It was October 27 and he was really agitated at a hot doe that kept bedding down to avoid his advances. (He died about a minute later;))
I have, however seen many bucks snort wheeze and growl in Illinois where the buck doe ratio is closer to 1:1 Wherever you use them, aggressive calls like the snort wheeze and the buck roar aremost likely to be successful on the truly dominant bucks in the area. Subordinate bucks and does will often tuck tail and run when they hear this type of call. It may be best to keep itin your pocketunless you aretrulyonly looking for the "boss" |
RE: Snort/Wheeze no good in PA?????
I had a deer do that to me all day last Sunday in East Otto, NY. I was walking out to my ground blind about 4am in the dark (no flashlight as I knew I'd be walking through the deer heard in the field, unfortunately no other choice other then spending the night in the blind) and scared the crap out of me, cause I was probably about to step on the deer I guess cause it snort/wheezed like it was 2 ft in front of me. Damn it scared the crap out of me, that and walking in total darkness and hearing foot falls running through the leave all around you is a bit disconcerting anyway. So in the after noon we were walking back into the woods to get in our climbers and off in the distance same snort/wheeze and yet a third time sort of stalking back to a location for a evening spot to hunt way back in the woods, big crashing and another snort/wheeze. We were so frustrated we decided to head back to the house and not hunt the rest of the evening because we didn't want to irrate the deer whatever it was anymore and not have it on the property anymore.

I've heard plenty of doe's do it as an alarm/warning. Didn't know bucks did it until seeing the promo videos last year.

RE: Snort/Wheeze no good in PA?????
A snort wheeze is VERY different from the regular alarm snorts. The regular alarm snorts mean run,(be alert) there is danger. A snort wheeze is made from a buck in a very agitated state towards another buck, and it means “I’m going to lay the smack down on you”. The 2 calls do not sound anything alike. Witnessing a mature buck snort wheeze is something that you’ll never forget.

I think the guy was hearing a simple "blow" alarm. I've heard that a million times, I don't remember ever hearing a snort/wheeze in the wilds of PA, personally.

ORIGINAL: livbucks I think the guy was hearing a simple "blow" alarm. I've heard that a million times, I don't remember ever hearing a snort/wheeze in the wilds of PA, personally. It is a neat experience when a buck does it near you! When I shot My last PAbuck doing it, there was no question that I had to get him mounted that way. Ittookmy taxidermist a long time because he had no experience with mounting that pose and he wanted to get it right. The mount came out great and really captured the moment (as I remember it) before he died. Theexpression on the bucks face is definitely one of maniacal rage. As if he's about to open a 55 gallon drum of whoopass! It's definitely not something you'll heasr from a doe or an immature buck. It's only something you'll hear from the alpha buck in the area |
