Muzzleloader Maryland
Any of you fellers going out for muzzleloader in MD? I might but not this Saturday. To warm!!!! Maybe squirrel hunting but not muzzleloader.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I'll be out Saturday in the morning and quite possibly the afternoon assuming that all of this fog leaves Northern Maryland by that time. I always enjoy the ML season and since I haven't had time to get out that much with the bow, I'mm probably split the ML season 50/50 with ML in one hand and the bow in the other.
This is the first year that I haven't gotten a deer by this point in the season. Hopefully that changes this weekend. I just enjoy being out in the woods, whether I see deer or not. :D Good luck to anyone else heading out this Saturday. |
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I'll Be out every day of Muzzle loader.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
As always, I'll have my bow (only) with me during any days I'm out during MZ season. Rickmur will be hunting with me on my place this Saturday and I have high hopes even with the warm weather. They're apparently yarded up around here. I'm seeing groups of 15 or so . . . with a 7 point that won't leave them alone.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Like someone said, hope this fog leaves. See you in the am Sat Dave.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I always try to take the first week of ML season off. It's my favorite time to hunt with a firearm. I'll be in the woods all week or until my freezer is full.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Dave, if you and Rick need any help thinning out that population, let me know.;)
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I'll be out Saturday morning, am going to hunt the rest of the year with my bow, as I haven't taken a deer yet with a bow, just ML and shotgun.
Hope the crowd has thinned out, during firearm season the woods were packed! -Rick C. |
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Going to try my Lease in Dorchester.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I didn't get out. How'd you guys do?
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Hunted tonight (Sat) didnt see a deer! First time this season I didnt see at least one ! I only heard one shot at 4:30 P and that was it . I did notice that there werent many hunters in local camps. Lower Eastern Shore.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Went in the AM and did not see a deer, squirrel, goose or anything except birds. Family commitments shot the PM hunt but saw deer moving at dusk while driving home.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
My dad, a buddy of mine and I all saw nothing this morning. THe woods were relatively still minus the squirrels and geese overhead. Seemed like the duck hunters were having a good morning though.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
DaveH saw 5 or 6 in the am, me nothing all day except for the 5 or 6 Dave sawwhen we were trying tofind a tree to set up in from a distance and they bolted out of the coverout the back doorand hi-tailed it across the field:(. Neither one of us saw anything in the evening. Maybe I should add we were bowhunting.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I saw five does in the morning traveling together and well out of range. I saw nothing in the PM and there was very light hunting pressure for opening day.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Saw nothing. And this is getting discouraging as i have not taken a deer yet. Had my youngest son with me saturday and well, he did not want to stay still. I'll be out every day this week while the kids are in school.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Sounds like the best time to get them now is when they are going from bedding back to feed in the evening. Do you guys concur?
I was thinking of doing some small game hunting in the mornings and deer in the afternoon from here on out. |
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I was out Saturday AM, only heard a couple of shots the whole morning. Didn't see any deer, but a little red fox kept me entertained for part of the morning.
Big change from gun season, nobody in the woods and quiet. -Rick C. |
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Yeah I think they're all nocturnal.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I think I'll head out this afternoon to another piece of property that I haven't hunted since October. See if I can have any luck with the ML. Otherwise, I'll be taking the bow out today.:D
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Hm, guess I have all the deer. Been on stand 15-20 times this year. Seen as few as 3, as many as 20. Usually been presented a shot. Had a misfire at 35yds. on a very nice 8 pointer with my CVA Hawken. Decided to take a doe last Saturday; a fat 18 month old. Should take another 2 or 3 does. I hunt my own land and have the best cover and leave plenty of food. I know how fortunate I am, but it takes a lot of work. Plowing, discing, fertilizing, spraying... much of it when I'd like to be fishing. The bucks have gone underground, even for me. They usually reapear in early December but not this year. Maybe it's been too warm.

RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Hunted Sat morning and saw zero deer. I did see a beautiful gray fox with an all black tail that i would have shot except that my 22 mag was laying on the backseat of my truck 300 yards away. I really want to get him mounted on a pedestal mount.

RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Any luck with the colder weather guys?
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
No luck for me. I was thinking the same thing but I saw nothing moving today. Tomorrow is another opportunity. They gotta eat sometime.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I think for me where I hunt the problem is that no one is out and moving them around. I think Sat maybe some guys will be pushing some. I just cant bring myself to walk. I dress warm for the cold weather and get too sweaty if I walk around. [&:]
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
I think the late muzzleloader season is not the greatest for deer. The second shotgun season should be good with other guys out there moving them around. They just aren't out for muzzleloader. Until you get them up and moving with drives and people walking around they're only gonna move at night I think. Well for public land that is...[&:]
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Yeah I agree
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
did anyone else notice a good amount of "270" muzzleloader sounds on Sat?? I know I can tell the difference between a MZ and a high powered rifle, and I know I heard 3-4 rifle shots. There arent that many game wardens in my county and It wouldnt surprise me if people did. [&:]
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
That sounds to reason Mossey, doesn't surprize me, of course they were just sighting in or something.[:'(]

RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Went to Meade this morning and sat in the stand I saw 7 out of two weeks ago. Didn't see a single deer. I actually wanted to go goose hunting this morning with my buddies instead, but one couldn't make it (we rescheduled for tomorrow). The other went to the farm mid morning to help out the owner on some work around the place(hence permission to hunt there), and saw lots of small flocks of geese flying overhead and even standing in the cut cornfield next to our blind! RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
At about 100P today and despite the wind, I decided that I was going to take the ML out to my spot that I hadn't hunted in since October. The woods were active early with about 1,000 squirrels. At about ten of 5, I saw antlers and threw the scope up to see a possible 9 or 10-point buck working my direction. He started to come broadside at about 45 yards and then decided to stop. Without hesitation, he started to angle off away from me and as he stepped into a small opening, I let out a "bah" and got him to lock up right before I pulled the trigger. Couldn't see through the smoke at first, but heard him and then saw his tail take off. He ran a total of about 20 yards, fell within sight, and expired in about 15 seconds. My .45 Shockwaves hit him perfect, nailing both lungs and expanding nicely upon impact. Finally, Hammy gets on the board this year.:D

RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Good deal Hammy, congratulations. Any pics ?
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Awesome dude. That is the encouragement I needed to make at least one more trip out with the muzzleloader this year. Definately post some pics.:D
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
Good job. I took the week off and did not see a single deer. I'm glad that you could find one...and a buck at that! Congrats.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
ORIGINAL: Rickmur Good deal Hammy, congratulations. Any pics ? Oh and I am super excited now. I am trying to get out as often as I can this week with the ML (all afternoons probably), while taking a friend out to teach him the ropes. once January hits, its back to the bow until the season is over. |
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
[:@]Been out the last two weekends, haven't seen hide nor hair of a deer yet, lots of squirrels and red foxes, even a skunk, but NO deer. I've been on private land with abundant food. Going to try and get out this week, at least a few hours, before work and then again on Saturday.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
yep another 4 hours wasted in a stand :DNot really, I wasnt at work ;)I think the tunnels the deer dug this year are really paying off for them!
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
So do you all think my time tomorrow would be better spend small gaming in the morning then deer in the afternoon?
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
it depends, my woods is (usually) great in the morning and horrible in the afternoon. My friend who hunts 2 miles from me never sees deer in the morning and strictly hunts the evening.
|
RE: Muzzleloader Maryland
mossy33oakwhere are your woods at? My place is erratic, one day see them in the am the next the pm or not at all.
