RE: Tactics for the Pa opener

We still hunt till about 9:30 opening day depends on what time group on neighboring farm begins their drive. We take the kids and a few other less mobile folks and sit them next to a huge plot that our farmer used to lease. The other group that hunts it haven't figured out that by driving it in the reverse direction that we once did that there are more ways for the deer to break back on them plus they drive it with not enough people so a lot of the deer break back on them and right into our groups lap. It is good for the younger hunter's to see deer and hopefully get a shot.

Personally I set up a mile or so in back of all this and set out a tinks scent bomb and wait to see if something comes along. It worked the last 2 years almost to the point of not being a challenge. 2 years in a row I have set up at different edges of food plot and had bucks walk out 45 Yards in front of me. 5 and 6 pointers passed on them both at 7 am only to have an 8 point come out 20 minutes later.
Then last year it was later in the morning and another 8 comes out almost same time as year before. 40 Yards broadside each time different locations. I plan on going back to my spot again this year cause we saw at least 2 other bucks in that area while spotting a few weeks back. If I don't see a thing yeah well, I did scout it and it seems that it should be another fun opening day.

Our group (mostly family) stand hunt our property until around noon & then we meet up & put on drives the rest of the afternoon. We ususally get as many on stand as we do putting on drives.

Good luck to everyone next Monday!!!!!!!!!!

Get your kids in the woods & off the streets !!

I will be sitting in the same spot that I sat for the last few Saturdays of archery. It is located about 150 yards from the roadway that separates the local gamelands from the local game preserve.

The locals affectionately refer to that terrain as "hamburger hill".

I'll be set up in the V of a giant fallen tree safe from stray shots. It is situated about 100 yards into the woods from the upper field and about 200 yards in from the side field. There are hunters all around the edges of the fields and they usually chase the deer into our woods and either into the thick area behind me or else over the hill into a ravine where my husband will have clear shot at anything that comes his way. My hubby hasn't got a deer yet ever - this is our second year hunting - so I'm wishing him a lot of luck. Less than three days to go....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

My stand that I will be using this year is in a funnel area. There is tons of crab apple trees and then it thins out and gets fairly open and much thinner so anything that comes through the area i see. I see tons of deer, its just getting that big buck to come below the stand is tough and alot of luck is also involved.

STAY PUT! This opener, I scouted out a good spot in some State Game Lands. Since I'll be in the southeast region of PA(Lebanon-Lancaster area) , I'm sure that I'll here plenty of BOOMS and BANGS, and see plenty of deer.

GOOD LUCK!
