Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
To all you PA'uns out there:
Those of you who scored, did you notice how polluted the deer are with ticks this year from up North? I even had ticks crawling on me when I was out hunting. I had one crawl up my face when we were sitting in camp on Monday night and so did my brother. They were headed North to our hair. The deer we shot were absolutely infested with them, but looked very healthy otherwise. Ticks SUCK! |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I'm 40, I've hunted since the age of 12 and bowhunting since the age of 15. This was the first year I ever, ever found a tick on myself and it's been several different days that I found one. My deer wasn't that bad but one day after turkey hunting I had several...freaks me out. I hope it a sign of things to come.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I've always had problems with my yellow lab getting ticks when we are at camp in northern Clearfield Co., but this is the first year I had problems at home here in Indiana Co. Some of the other guys have gotten them on themselves at camp after being out in the woods, but I found one on myself after raking leaves in my yard at home. My wife had to remove it with tweezers as it was in a place I couldn't see or reach well. We never had them at home here before, or at least never got them on us. I'm a little concerned that they have spread their range, and don't really know what to do about it.

come to dauphin county i have never seen the ticks as bad as they are this year.use a good strong shampoo and good hot water
|
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I've never known the tick problem to be as bad as it it this year. I come home with ticks on me half the time anymore. It's always deer ticks crawling on me, but with my dog having lyme's disease for the 2nd time, it's really getting worrisome.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
in northern new york we have had a otn of ticks. a few on the cat, my dad had one on him, and shook two more off his clothes after hunting, and the deer he shot was totally infested with them. its been a terrible year for them

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
My deer had about the same amount as any other deer I have taken over the years! Last year was the worst for me! Me and my bother-in-law were heading to his house after coming out of the woods when we stopped on the way at a buddies house to see his buck he had hanging! Well this is no bull but when I got out of the car I noticed a tick crwling on my arm so I started to check all over and I must od had 30 to 40 of them all over my body! Talk about being freaked out! I hunted the same spot this year and did not get one on me!!
|
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
got lyme disease this year, lemme tellyou , you dont want it. get some premethrin spray and treat your clothes... it dries odorless, deer don't smell it.
some of my spots here in the center of NY, you'll get 20-30 ticks on you walking 50 yards to your stand in THE OPEN HARDWOODS. go in the brush/ forget it! when i hang my deer , i spray em on the outside with the premrethrin or permanone spray, the next day there will be 30 to 100 ticks on the garage floor... dont even want to think about the infestation if i didnt spray em.. keep alert for those suckers! |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I looked and could not find a tick on the buck I killed .If you are a taxidermist you have them on you year round. It's nothing to be out at night in public and fill one crawling up your neck.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I thought it was just us. I took my buck opening morning and pulled 5 ticks off of me. We also took some relatives deer to the butcher and it looked like their skin was crawling. Every deer we saw was infested with them. I've never seen it like this before.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I'm hunting in Adams county and pulled 2 deer ticks off of me on Monday.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
Hey I'm in Virginia and killed a big one on 18 NOV. I have never seen as many ticks on a deer. Funny though the smallones I've killed this year don't have any

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
Hunted 2F - Every deer we killed were infested with both ticks and Deer Keds (deer flies) - which look like ticks. Google the images to see the difference...
I killed a pretty nice coyote, and he was covered in both as well, but not to the same extent as the bucks. In two days in the ANF, I picked no less than 5 ticks and 75 keds off my face/hair/neck/clothes. The Keds aren't Lyme carriers, so they're just creepy-crawly, but the abundance of deer ticks is scary. You couldn't walk 100 yards down a grassy gasline without picking up 5 hitch-hikers. Will somebody please provide a link to a good, scent-free, tick killing/repelling product? I've had wayyy too many ticks in the past ten years, and I'm probably pushing my luck with Lyme disease. I think it's time to start taking precautionary measures. What's the deal with these Keds? Were they so abundant due to the heat? Daytime temps were easily in the 60's, and the mosquitoes were even out. I've seen a few of them before, but never like that. The deer (and the hunters) were crawling with them. |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
Are the keds the bugs that fly to you and then drop their wings once they get on you? Do they bite like a tick?
That is the one thing I like about freezing temps for deer hunting up there. No bugs to pester you. |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I shot a bunch of does this year and didn't really notice any ticks. Shot my buck and WOW, then things were everywhere, I pulled 5 off me driving home, and a few more thru out the night until I was able to shower. That's an icky feeling. I think some were those keds, they look like ticks with wings?
BUddy of mine runs a lab for ducks and stuff and he said this year has been ridiculous for ticks. |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
This is the worse year I have ever seen for ticks, all of the deer I killed had a lot of them. I also found them crawling on my clothes after just walkig through the woods. I think the warm temps have kept them around longer.
|
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
It was a warm wet spring, followed by a warm fall so the ticks are still around. I pulled a deer tick off my neck while sitting in the woods, Lyme disease scares me!

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
The tics are getting worse all over the Norhteast. In MA, we never used to have them in the western part of the state. Now its more every year. I think the real warm weather during the season also has them more active than a usual deer season. I had two on me this week, one attached. Lyme sucks, don;t get it!! I have had it, but my girl really got it bad and spent days in the hospital!!

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
i have worked in 17 states, mostly in the east, in the past 15 years.Worst ticks I ever seen were on the NC Outer Banks. In 1995a MAnative told me to take an odorless garlic capsul daily and ticks would not bother me. Did that.Itreally worked for me. Found one tick dug in after i had quit taking garlic for a few months. Now i take a capsule every day-again no ticks.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but the subject of Lyme's disease keeps coming up.
Around 8-10 years ago, there was a series of shots available for people to innoculate them from Lyme's disease. Several of my friends and I got those shots. They evidently took the product off the market, which makes me a little nervous as to why. Nothing has rotted or fallen off me yet but I'm curious if anyone out there knows why it is currently unavailable......... |
RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I hunt in Greene Co. Haven't seen any ticks yet.( knock on wood) I took two deer, one in archery and one in early muzzle loader and didn't see any ticks on them. i looked too, because I butcher my own. I did have a few of those Keds on me this year, though. Damn things were crawling around on my head and had a heck of a time trying to catch them.

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I believe they took the vaccination off the market Pawildman because the shot gave more people Lyme's disease then it prevented. I think if you didn't get it by now they you're in the clear. But the odds aren't good for new people getting the shot so it is gone. I think that is what happened. That is what I remember. :-)
I had one tick on me this year and my deer had like 5 or 6. Cold weather is supposed to hit tonight so hopefully tomorrow there won't be that many. :-) |

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
I just finished skinning the head out on my basket racked 8 point that is pictured on my "PA Public land bucks" thread. It was in the fridge for a few days. The keds were very active and I would say there were a hundred if there was one. The genuine ticks were so lethargic from the cold that they barely moved and looked almost dead. I only found a few actual ticks. I found both the big white ticks and the smaller black ticks with the red spot on them. I really didn't have much concern with them because they were very unwilling to leave the hide I was working on. A few keds did try to crawl up my arm but no big deal. I put the skinned cape in the freezer to kill all of them before I go on to fleshing and splitting it. I would say the keds were more of an annoyance to me than the ticks were. Still, I have never shot a deer with that many parasites on it. YUK!

RE: Do you want ticks with that PA buck?
also guys, dont be lulled into thinking cold weather kills the ticks off, they will just slow down a bit. i get them all through rabbit and coyote hunting, even when it's 20 degrees out. they seem to be worse when i hunt low lying , sandy soil areas along the hudson river valley.
don't blow it off, get checked when you get bit! i was never sicker in my life, and for weeks!! and dont forget about the "new " tick were seeing now the "lone star tick" , named for the white dot on its back.... supposedly faster , more agressive and carry OTHER diseases, ALONG with lyme....i've been hunting for 20 plus years, never HEARD of a tick untill about 7 years ago, what gives? |
