NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
Is it illegal to bait deer in NY with feed products. If so then why do the local pro shops sell products such as cmere deer (The product endorsed by Hank Parker) as well as other food baiting products. I know that salt is illegal but what about food?
Thanks |
RE: NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
yes it is illegal to feed deer with baits. No it is not illegal to sell it and you can use food plots to bait I mean feed deer.

RE: NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
You get caught baiting in ny that will be that last time you hunt. The DEC is pretty harsh when it comes to baiting. I actually had this conversation with a local DEC official. Even if you find someone else's bait pile and hunt over it, you will charged.

RE: NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
What kind of a question is that? :eek:Hmmm,....What's the point of putting out corn? If you're planning to hunt over it, it's bait. If you need to think of waysto justify what you're doing, and ways to convince the wardens that you're not baiting then you probably are.
If you don't know what baiting is either read the book (comes with the license)that explains all the rules, or call the NY DEC and ask. |

You could put out the corn, But you can't hunt around it

Another point - these questions are all answered very clearly in the regulations book EVERY hunter receives each year with their licence.
It is your duty and responsibility to know these things and be aware of changes. But of course we all knew that.:D Steve |

Unfortunately baiting runs rampid on Long Island. DEC has their hands full trying to catch the cheaters and it hurts all ethical hunters. I hate baiters!!

RE: NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
I know of a guy that showed up at a local coffee house showing pictures from his game cam of a nice 8 point, only problem was that you could see the automatic feeder hanging overhead. A week later DEC showed up at his farm and found the feeder. I don't know if they charged him, but they did take his feeder.
Be careful of who you show your pictures to if you are using bait to attract deer to your camera. |

O.K. now, what about this.A local friend of mine feeds his cows corn or silage in outdoor troughs,Always had a bunch of turkeys show up after cows get done feeding.Didn't mind them, has a few nice photos of them.Just after the season started had a doe and a couple fawns showing up.Then a few more deer showed up.Well last weekend siad he feed the cows and the deer showed up.There was a couple bucks in the group. My friend finally had enough, and went out to scare them off and shot one of the bucks.Well guess what just after he shot the local encon officer showed up,claimed he was hunting over bait and took his deer and gun away.Goes to court tonight at 7:00 to answer to charges. Now here is my question? When was it a bait pile and when was it feed for his cows. The troughs have been there for at least 10 years and this is the 1st time deer have been a problem.

RE: NY Baiting legal, or illegal?
If NY is like PA which I believe it is, those products are not illegal in the offseason. They sell many more products in Gander Mountain that are not legal in the PA woods during the season like electronic deer calls for another instance. They are not illegal to sell them.

Rob, You can not feed wild animals at all in NY, no matter what time of year it is.
