I hunt for the outdoor experience, not with the intention on killing something everytime I step foot into the woods. I do not need to hunt for the pure ejoyment of breathing fresh air. This is the reason I bought land and built a house on it. I wanted to get away from the farmers that the DEC is letting shoot all night long any day of the week including nights. I have seen it first hand. These farmers let everyone and their brother shoot as many deer as they want. How can you tell a doe from a buck with shed antlers at midnight in the middle of march????? YOU CAN'T.. but they are shooting anyway and just stacking them up. It makes me sicker knowing the DEC patrolls these areas and continues to let it happen. Point is... The DEC knows what is going on.. They are issuing slaugheter permits to certain farmers in Ulster County NY who do not even pick their crops anymore because their land is either on the real estate market or they cry storm damage and collect insurance money.

just for the record.. I am 150% all for the decrease of doe permits and a state wide AR rule of 3 pts on 1 side or better. I would love to see this pass next year.

Tell me again why what you see in your area means here in 7j and 7h we need the same restrictions?

Over 60% of the 1 1/2 bocks have 3 pts or better.

Research"hygrading".

You want a state wide regulation to target the best of our young bucks? This will help how?

Steve

I recently moved from southern Ulster Co to northern Ulster co, Area 3c and 3J with AR's. I have YET to even see a deer with a horn let alone 3 pts on one side. So far I have seen the rear end of 1 deer and another 4 does running. I believe this may possibly be the worst hunting season for me in 16 years. Since opening day I have yet to see anyone else hunting around my area

The restrictions you want statewide don't seem to have helped much where you hunt - other then kill hunter numbers. Even if they work, how many of those lost hunters will ever return?

Steve

Why 8 pts? Want to chase even more hunters away.W
Most people that I know who hunt want a reasonable opportunity to take a deer.
Lower dmp's and AR as you say is needed and it doesn't leave much to shoot at.
Would still like to hear your thoughts on hygrading as a result of points based AR. I am sure you will share with us as it should be a concern for anyone wanting AR mandatory.

Tell me again how the restricted dmp's and AR are working in your area?

ORIGINAL: NY Bowhunter

Try to get the kids involved in other ways of hunting. "Seeing" deer isn't the only thing that matters. I understand that is the ultimate goal to peek a kids interests, but there are tons of other things to get them involved.

Take them out with you and your buddies setting up stands and trimming shooting lanes. Explain to them why you're setting up a stand where you are. Talk to them about the wind and where you think the deer will be traveling to that particular stand. Show them food and bedding areas and where they travel back and forth. Take them scouting. Show them deer beds, scrapes, rubs, heavy used doe trails, etc.... Talk to them about the moon phases, cold fronts, the RUT. Explain to them everything that affects deer movement and why. Give them a feel for putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Start them out young with the knowledge that it's more about throwing up a stand in some tree hoping for a deer to walk by. If you sit and don't see deer on a particular hunt explain to them why that may be (other than the DEC has the entire NYS herd screwed up[:-]). Let them hang around you and your buddies when you tell your war stories. They'll feel like one of the gang and get interested. If you want, shine some fields after dark in your area so they know deer are around.
Very true NY Bowhunter! When I put in my fall crops, the kids were there to help as I explained everything I did. I also started this past spring an "Annually Family Tree Planting Party" in which everyyear as I plant various trees along the property, the kids are involved. However, with that said, NY does need to lower the age, 16 is just ridiculous! My kids are 8 & 10, the best I can hope for thus far is the fact at age 14 they can hunt a doe with my DMP tags. My nephew is 13 now and I already told him to get ready for next year!

As for seeing less deer, I agree to an extent. During bow season I saw plenty, during rifle is almost zero. Too many neighbors doing deer drives and "recycling" their tags. Many only have one doe tag, but yet they shoot 2-3, butcher them right away and don't use the tag unless DEC happens to be around. I think many hunters need to look in the mirror for the issues, just because DEC gives out the tags, doesn't mean you should use them up if your not seeing that many deer. We need to make the right decisions, but hey, keep shooting the spikes and four pointers and complain that you don't see any big bucks????? Hello........

GR8RALLY, I have some of the same problems as you. I've seen no noticeable fall off in deer numbers during archery season this year, but after the property I hunt was pushed on opening day, the deer wised up pretty quickly.

Steve,

I do not think the AR is working in my area because I do not see any deer. However that one lone 4 pointer I saw last year may be a 6 or an 8 this year. So in theory if he is still alive than it does work because last season he was not a shooter deer. Leave the does alone and bring the population back to where it should be. Lower DMP tags and create the AR statewide. I could care less if it chases away hunters... You obviously do not have the pleasure of dealing with Brooklyn hunters and if you did your opinion would probably be doing a 180.

Salty,

Your conditions very well could be vastly different from mine - thats the point I've been trying to make.

I ask that you not push for a statewide change to fix a problem for your area that may have far different results in mine or others.

All adjustments need to be done at a wmu level or lower - one size does not fit all.

Good luck in your area.
